This paper aims to explore how Maggie Gee’s The Flood makes readers experience the half-drowned city after the great flood due to climate change, in multi-sensory and affective ways, and suggests our ethical responsibility for others, grounded on the fact that all beings, including human species and other species, are persistently interpenetrated and intricately interconnected. The conflicts between different groups deepen in the city messy with chilly and damp buildings, shabby boats on the dirty water, and the terror of infectious disease. The flood, however, turns out to reveal the absolute relatedness between humans and the affinity between human bodies and nonhuman bodies such as those of animals and plants and even the heavenly bodies. By depicting urban foxes alert to the imminent massive tidal waves ahead of humans, and the enormous water materially embodied like a living creature, this novel emphasizes that nonhumans are active agents with powerful agency, and requires humans to be humble. Locating all the characters in the contact zone between various families, The Flood implies that the Anthropocene can be thought on the massive scale of the Earth and yet eventually leads to the question of having a home to return to.

This paper explores the 30-year history of The Korean Association for Feminist Studies in English Literature (KAFSEL), focusing both on core research topics―feminism, gender, and sexuality―and on the intellectual performance of feminist scholars in English Literature. Established on September 5, 1992, KAFSEL held monthly workshops from 1992 to 1997, the highlight of the association's intellectual activity. Feminist Studies in English Literature (FSEL), the journal of the association, was first published in June 1995. “The Location of Feminist Studies in English Literature,” the first international conference, was held on November 5-6, 1999, and in 2000, FSEL assembled an international editorial board. FSEL was listed in the MLA bibliography beginning in 1999 and in the British Library Catalogue beginning in 2000. In December 2003, a journal exchange between FSEL and AALA (The Asian American Literature Association) in Japan was launched. KAFSEL has tried to broaden and strengthen the FSEL Global Network by leading a discussion of feminism, gender, and sexuality in Asia and around the world, with the ultimate goal of publishing an international journal. In addition to the dissemination of feminist intellectual discourse, the history of KAFSEL should be remembered as the record of a passionate, collaborative, and devoted group of Korean feminist scholars amidst the larger intellectual feminist community in Asia. As we face the transformative wave of feminist studies in Korea, KAFSEL should take on new challenges in addressing questions of membership and the thematic agendas that will define this unique research field, both in the present and future.

Reviewing recent academic research on neoliberal feminism, this article explores four noticeable currents of neoliberal feminism that have emerged in the U.S. and Europe particularly since the 2010s. Approaching neoliberalism as a contemporary form of gevernmentality that disciplines people as human capital, I discuss how the neoliberal politics of affect produces the individual as entrepreneurial self and works to thoroughly privatize social responsibility. Emerging from the sites where feminism converges with neoliberal marketization of almost all dimensions of life, neoliberal feminism reshapes feminist politics and women's lives while producing new kinds of feminist subjects. I argue that corporate feminism, popular feminism, balance feminism and neoliberal selfie feminism are contemporary forms of neoliberal feminism that need to be historicized in order to understand both the power and limits of these discourses.

This study analyzes research trends of Feminist Studies in English Literature, the leading academic journal of feminist literary criticism of English Literature in Korea since 1995. Following a statistical research method, this study examines research trends of 518 articles in 64 issues published between 1995 and 2021. The specific focus of the quantitative analysis includes: number of articles, authorship, categories of research type, research target writers, and keyword frequency. The results of the study demonstrate not only the academic performance of the journal, but the current challenges facing scholars of feminist studies in English literature. This quantitative evaluation of the journal can serve as a valuable resource for scholars engaged in discussions about the identity of the journal, and will help the journal both diversify and expand the spectrum of research subjects for promoting the overall quality of the journal.

This essay presents a brief historiography of contemporary feminist literary criticism from the perspective of subjectless critique. Believed to be centered around the core concept of female subjectivity, feminist literary criticism is supposed to address issues related with what it means to be a woman, to write as a woman, to be constantly aligned with collective traits of femininity. Nonetheless, the very category of woman has always been contested as it needs to be deconstructed in its essentialist assumptions and to be reconfigured in pursuit of multiplicity, singularity, irreducibility, and, most importantly, difference not just among women but rather within a subject. Such perpetual instability or impossibility of the category of woman, paradoxically enough, enables feminist discourses to remain open to re-negotiation with intersecting axes of subjectivity formation. This essay attempts to examine how the discourse of feminist literary criticism can be decentered through radical intervention with the linear temporality and ceaseless re-significations of feminine difference as well. The structure of the essay consists of the following components. First, feminist literary criticism is contextualized under the rubric of 'critique' elaborated by Michel Foucault. Then, I revisit Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own to tap into its audacious dismissal of binary gender definition and its nuanced proposal of subjectless writer. Next, drawing on Julia Kristeva's formulation of literary inscription of feminist temporality, I discuss the ways in which sexual difference can be theorized in relation with subjectless state. The final thesis 'feminism which is not one' is demonstrated with emphases on disidentifying process of becoming, which requires a critical distance from amenable storytelling of feminist history. The essay concludes with a brief illumination of political reverberations of subjectless critique in this increasingly post-critical times.

Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse (1927) describes an exquisite moment of eating a dish called “Boeuf en Daube,” which is beef stew cooked according to a French recipe. Boeuf en Daube is the main dish at a dinner party designed by Mrs. Ramsay, a middle-aged woman who evokes a Victorian angel in the house. Represented as an altruistic woman having compassion toward poor and solitary people, Mrs. Ramsay wants her guests to acquire a moment of bliss at her party. Through a lot of hard work, she accomplishes a well-made Boeuf en Daube. Mrs. Ramsay serves the cuisine to family members and guests who have suffered from emotional hunger. Through this scene, the novel creates an analogy between Mrs. Ramsay's dinner and the Last Supper, suggesting that the people eating Boeuf en Daube are consuming the flesh and blood of a woman who has devoted herself to feeding others. In previous studies that analyze the dining scene, there are two opposing interpretations. Some critics praise Mrs. Ramsay's spirit of compassion and her creative ability to engender a moment of joy through food. Other critics are dissatisfied with Mrs. Ramsay's domestic role, asserting that she reinforces a servile subjectivity that was internalized in Victorian England. This paper argues that both interpretations fail to articulate the deep and complex implications of Boeuf en Daube. In seeking to unravel the layered meanings of food in the novel, this paper offers an opportunity reconsider the identity Mrs. Ramsay, and thus offers a fresh approach to To the Lighthouse.

This essay explores how Asian American poet Mei-mei Berssenbrugge's experimental lyric poem Endocrinology narrates and responds to the environmental crisis by synthesizing science and poetry. Part memoir, part scientific observation, Endocrinology vividly describes the poet's personal experience of environmental illness after she was accidentally exposed to a toxic pesticide near her place. Reading Endocrinology with Stacy Alaimo's concept of “trans-corporeality,” I argue that Berssenbrugge reconceptualizes the body, especially women's bodies affected by environmental illness, as a trans-corporeal space in which the relationship between human and nonhuman is entangled and affects each other. To illuminate various aspects of environmental risks that permeate our daily lives, Berssenbrugge not only critiques rigid categories between nature and culture, but also seeks to broaden the scope of feminist literature beyond human agency by highlighting the intersections of environmental and gender issues. Navigating the boundaries between the biomedical understanding of environmental risks and the sensory perception of the toxic body, this essay finally suggests that Berssenbrugge's ecofeminist imagination helps readers to develop arts of noticing in our moment of crisis.

Although plentiful literary works 'about' mothers have been published throughout literary history, mothers' own voices have only appeared in poetic works relatively recently, and have received little scholarly attention. This essay explores Anne Sexton's motherhood poems from a matricentric perspective. As a mother who raised two kids in the 1950s when American society used an ideal mother image as propaganda, Sexton in her brutally candid motherhood poems invites readers to look into the issue of forced motherhood, what Betty Friedan once called the “problem that has no name.” Against a backdrop of this motherhood discourse in the 1950s, Sexton addressed what mothers encountered in reality in the voice of the mother-speaker and constructed the space of matricentric motherhood poems in her era. By analyzing how Sexton poeticizes her thoughts about the female body with the reproductive system without romanticizing it, this paper proposes that her writing process foregrounds the metaphorical connection of the female body to its creativity. Her motherhood poems delve into maternal experiences to reveal motherhood's inherent status, which is liminal and constantly re-defined through mother-child relationships. The essay concludes by proclaiming the significance of motherhood poetics generated by Sexton's poetic praxis, which gives voice to maternal experiences as a mother-poet.

This paper reads Ira Levine's 1972 novella, The Stepford Wives, as a text that exposes the backlash mentality of anti-feminists and a text that takes an introspective look at second-wave feminism to subtly suggest its limited scope through the protagonist's failure to look beyond the boundary of white, middle-class, suburban housewives of Stepford in her fight against Stepford's misogynistic Men's Association. Struggling over women's right to subjecthood, the yet-to-be-killed-and-automated wives of Stepford, including Joanna Eberhart, strive to step out of the male(centric) gaze that objectifies and domesticates them. Despite the keen eyes with which Joanna penetrates the violent workings of the Association, she fails to prevent it from depriving the Stepford wives of life and subjecthood. This is due to Joanna's failure to see working-class women, unmarried women, aged widows, and non-white women of Stepford as her potential feminist compatriots, which leaves her struggling to protect herself from the Association's deadly grip in isolation. By drawing attention to the perspectival limitation of Joanna's feminism and how it ultimately precludes her from garnering enough power to liberate the Stepford wives, Stepford criticizes the classism, ageism, and racism of second-wave feminism, and emphasizes the necessity of an extended form of feminism that embraces intersectionality.

This paper seeks to advance a close reading of Sophocles' Antigone through the lens of contemporary biopolitics. Drawing mainly on Roberto Esposito's biopolitics and Giorgio Agamben's concepts of homo sacer and the zone of indistinction, this paper complicates the traditional reading of Antigone as typifying the conflict between human and divine law. I aim not only to further a theoretical analysis but also to enrich a literary understanding of how modern day biopolitics may be applied to premodern texts. My reading of Esposito and Agamben focuses on the gendered dimension of biopolitics, specifically as it applies to the context of Antigone and Antigone's punishment as ordered by Creon. I argue that Antigone's body itself presents an immunological threat to the sovereign order of Thebes, and by refusing to include this inhuman, apolitical body within the polis, Creon's decision to put Antigone to death paradoxically invites the contagion of death upon the city.
