Electrospray is a method of atomizing fluid using high voltage supply and capable of generating continuous flow and coherent size of droplets. Electrical system and properties of fluids has enabled electrospray to have various spray modes. However, its studies have been confined only in Cone jet, which is more stable and easier to manipulate droplets’ size than other spraying modes. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate and compare other spraying modes based on experimental parameters and physical properties of fluids. This research paper identified nine different spray modes. It was found out that Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) is proportional to flow rate of fluids and maximum difference among spray modes was 1.7 times. On the other hand, SMD standard deviation had low variations on specific flow rates of fluids. Pulsed jet mode recorded the largest SMD standard deviation, while Spindle recorded the lowest.

In this study, an experimental investigation on the effects of the pressure ratio on the wall-impingement spray characteristics of nitrogen gas using a compressed natural gas (CNG) injector was conducted. The transient development of the impingement spray was recorded by a high speed camera with Z-type Schlieren visualization method. The spray behavior under various pressure ratio conditions were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the pressure ratio has positive effect on the development of spray wall-impingement. The effects of the above factor were evaluated in a constant volume chamber at atmospheric conditions. The data from test showed that, with the increase of the pressure ratio, the spray tip penetration (STP) quickly increases before the impingement and gradually increases after the impingement. Additionally, the spray velocity first increases and then sharply decreases on regardless of the injection pressure level. As the spray spreading angle increases, spray area and volume increases rapidly with the increase in STP at the beginning of injection, and finally entered a stable range, has a great correlation with the increase of pressure ratios.

In upcoming Post Stage-V and Tier 5 regulations of construction machineries, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are strictly limited in cold start conditions. In response to this, a method of improving NOx conversion efficiency has been applied by installing an electric heating catalyst (EHC) in front of conventional urea-SCR systems so that the evaporation and thermal decomposition of urea-water solution can be promoted in cold start conditions. In this strategy, the evaporation and thermal decomposition of urea-water solution and corresponding NOx conversion efficiency are governed by temperature conditions inside the EHC. Therefore, characterizing the temperature distribution in the EHC under various operating conditions is crucial for the optimized operation and control of the EHC in Urea-SCR systems. In this study, a 1-D modeling analysis was performed to predict the heater surface temperature distribution in EHC under various operating conditions. The reliability of prediction results was verified by comparing them with measurement results obtained using an infrared (IR) camera. Based on 1-D analysis results, the effects of various EHC operation parameters on the heater surface temperature distribution were analyzed and discussed.

Hot-firing tests were performed to experimentally confirm the effect of the eigenmode in the fuel-air mixing section on combustion instability by changing mixing section length, inlet mean velocity, equivalence ratio, and swirler geometry. A premixed gas composed of air and ethylene was supplied to the combustion chamber through an mixing section and an axial swirler. As the mixing section length increased, the inlet velocity perturbation decreased, but the combustion instability increased more. It was found that the resonance frequency of the first longitudinal mode in the mixing section shifted to the third longitudinal mode as the length of the mixing section increased. The results implied that the transition of the resonace frquency by changing the length of the mixing section might cause combustion instability.

In this study, the combustion instability characteristics according to the change in the hydrogen ratio in the fuel in the single nozzle system of the hydrogen-natural gas mixed gas turbine for power generation was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element analysis-based Helmholtz solver. This combustor shows the instability characteristics in which mode transition occurs from a mode having a low amplitude near 70 Hz to a mode having a high amplitude of 250 Hz or higher as the hydrogen fraction in the fuel increases. The current modeling results are found to reasonably predict the main characteristics of the change in measured instability frequency and growth rate with the change in fuel composition.

Flash boiling occurs in a couple of modern engineering systems and understanding its mechanism is important. In this experimental study, discharge coefficient of flash boiling spray from simple orifice nozzle was measured, and backlight imaging was acquired at injection pressure to 6.0 bar and temperature to 163℃ for the purpose. Pressurized water by pump was used for working fluid and was heated by electric heater and ejected through simple orifice nozzle diameter of 0.5 mm. High speed camera with long distance microscope was used for backlight imaging in two FoV having magnification of 3.3 and 0.64. The decrease of discharge coefficient according to degree of superheating and evolution of flash boiling spray imaged at various pressure and temperature were explained by the pressure field inside the injector.
