The purpose of this study is to compare the differences between Korean and Chinese native speakers' semantic formulas of criticizing speech acts by taking social status and social distance as variables. Unlike clearly defined speech acts such as apologizing, requesting and refusing, criticizing speech acts are usually accompanied by more than one illocutionary force, and their interpretations are often negotiable, therefore they are relatively complex.
In this study, a total of 100 Korean and Chinese native speakers were recruited and asked to fill out a discourse completion test (DCT) containing 12 criticize-provoking scenarios. We use the DCT as the major instrument because it can lead to the most important part of the speech act under investigation, and we also use a semi-structured interview to supplement the investigation. Criticizing semantic formulas were divided into categories and analyzed in terms of their overall use across all the scenarios. When comparing the two groups, the KNS performed more clearly criticizing about the intimate relationship than the CNS. Also, KNS and CNS criticize about low-status strangers both clearly, but CNS criticize about low acquaintances less clearly, while KNS maintained the same consistency. And then such similarities and differences discussed from the culture specificity perspective. (Dongguk University)

This study aims to analyze the diagnosis assessment of CASNAV in France to improve KSL diagnosis assessment for elementary KSL students in Korea. CASNAV is an educational institution that supports French education for immigrant children in France. Since France has developed into a multicultural society before any other country, it is necessary to study this case in detail. In order to meet this purpose, this study analyzed the diagnosis assessment of CASNAV in Paris. As suggestions for improvement for KSL diagnosis assessment, this study proposes that KSL diagnosis assessment should (a) focus on whether communication can be performed through various means, (b) evaluate students' academic performance in consideration of learning experiences in their country of origin, (c) ensure validity by arranging assessment questions progressively, and (d) provide a guideline to teachers for conducting a dynamic assessment. This study focused on the importance of Korean taboo culture education for female marriage immigrants, and searched for an improvement of female marriage immigrants' intercultural competence through the development of reading materials from a intercultural perspective, as well as their smooth adaptation to life in Korea. This study analyzed first, with regard to the taboo culture education for international marriage immigrants, the current status of taboos presented in Korean textbooks, and compiled taboo items that should be dealt with in Korean culture education by supplementing the taboos missing here. Classified taboo items were divided into taboos related to pregnancy and childbirth and taboos related to daily life, according to the female immigrants' life cycle. In addition, in order to solve the issues of peculiarities of female immigrants who experience pregnancy and childbirth upon entry into Korea, and of differences of their Korean language ability, this study proposed a step-by-step method of how to effectively provide taboo cultural reading materials according to their Korean linguistic level. The reading materials developed in this study will be useful not only to improve the intercultural competence of international marriage immigrants, but also to help them communicate with their family members, Korean teachers and Korean neighbors, and are expected to be utilized in raising their children in the future. This study aims to contrast English loanwords in Korean, Japanese, Shona, Thai, and Indonesian, and to analyse the phonological adjustment process observed when loaning words from the viewpoint of their universality and specificity. For this reason, we first analyse the phonological characteristics of the word-final position such as its syllable structure and the phonetic value of the final consonants in the studied languages. We then examine the aforementioned English loanwords' characteristics in each of the studied languages. We can classify Korean, Japanese, and Shona as phoneme-dominant, and Indonesian and Thai as syllable-dominant languages. As such, in the process of loaning words from English, Korean, Japanese, and Shona add a vowel and pronounce the consonant with its original phonetic value, while Indonesian and Thai drop the consonant in order to achieve the well-formedness of syllable structure. Additionally, in phoneme-dominant languages, a vowel is added in order to protect the English consonants, e.g. Korean adds the vowel [ɨ], Japanese the vowel [Щ], and Shona the vowel [i]. However, all the three languages add the vowel [u] after bilabials, and the vowel [i] after palatals. Not only can this study be of help in understanding the phonology of loanwords, but also we will be able to use it in teaching Korean loanwords to Korean language learners. (Keimyung University)

This study was conducted with the purpose to clarify the necessity and importance of color terms education as a cultural teaching content and seek a new direction of Korean culture teaching. In order to achieve such, the current status of Korean color terms teaching and the use of color terms in cultural teaching materials were analyzed. 33 books of 4 types were selected for the analysis, focusing on the language use environment and the recently-completed integrated textbooks. Through this, the current status of Korean color terms education and the use of color terms in cultural teaching contents were examined. Based on this, useful aspects of each textbook were converged as a compromise method and used to suggest the color terms education method and utilization plan. (Yanbian University)

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the remote observation of pre-service Korean language teachers provides field experiences to them by observing synchronous online Korean classes. To prove this, a survey was carried out on pre-service Korean language teachers in Cyber university. Based on the overall interface, their immersion in observing classes. as well as the quality and satisfaction of the observation program of classes. they positively evaluated the synchronous observation of online Korean classes. Their satisfaction from the class observation showed a strong correlation with the quality of the class observation program. Also, there was a moderate correlation not only between their immersion in the program and its quality but also between their immersion and overall interface. As a result of the regression analysis, the quality of the class observation program had a significant effect on the satisfaction from it. Based on the discussion among a field instructor and pre-service teachers after their observation, it is found that they have a great desire to know teachers' talk, online classroom management, interaction with students, and online teaching tools. This study aims to research the test-takers' perception of the prompt given by the TOPIK II (Test of Proficiency in Korean II) writing question 54. The prompt phrases, which were given in the writing assessment part of the 52nd, 60th, and 64th TOPIK II test, were used as research material, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to research the test-takers' perception of the prompt phrases in various aspects. Specifically, the questions in the questionnaire were organized and examined how the test-takers approach the given prompt, how the prompt affects performing the writing task, perception of the prompt content composition, difficulty of the prompt, and opinions on the prompt composition, etc. Through research on how writing prompts affect the performance of test takers in previous studies, the study is meaningful in that there have been no studies in this field in Korean language education, and some implications for TOPIK II based on the test takers' perception. The purpose of this study is to see if the vocabulary card and the situational graphic advance organizers result in difference in speaking ability of intermediate Korean learners and to identify its correlation between learner's personality traits and speaking ability for Korean language education. To achieve this, 38 students who are enrolled in an intermediate Korean class at a Northwestern university participated in this study. The researchers conducted this study within one academic semester through collecting data from surveys, class observations, and interviews for mixed methods research. This study has shown that using situational graphic as an advance organizer helped improve the learner's speaking ability more than using vocabulary cards. Also, there was a correlation between their personality traits and speaking ability. The researchers found that openness and extroversion are personality traits that are correlated to improved speaking ability. Neuroticism has a correlation with the speed of speech however, there was no correlation found with the speaking ability. (Korea University)

This study aims to contribute to the Korean Translation as a Foreign Language to advanced Chinese Learners of Koreans by making knowledge of Korean's grammatical and semantic equivalence to the Vdao(到) complement of Chinese. In the study, the Vdao complements are classified according to the process of grammaticalization. By dividing the Vdao complements into three categories: postposition, completive, degree complement. The study aims to examine the tangible differences in the transfer methods in korean translation. By analyzing the translation method of Vdao, it was found that the different grammaticalization of Vdao showed differences in translation strategies from Korean translation to different Korean Transfer methods. The translation patterns were categorized into metaphrase, paraphrase, deletionliberal and omission. Also, from the translation perspective, it is intended to contribute to Chinese Learners of Korean translation and translation education by understanding the method and strategy for Vdao complement. The purpose of this study is to prepare basic data for proverbs education for advanced Korean learners by analyzing the variation of proverbs used in newspaper articles. For this purpose, 16 educational proverbs were selected for analysis. And examples was extracted from the A corpus of articles from the National Institute of Korean Language and Naver News. As a result of analyzing the variation patterns of proverbs from a morphological perspective, it was confirmed that deformation according to context, word order deformation, replacement of components, addition, and omission were all common. Furthermore, by examining how meaning changes in these morphological variations, the changes were analyzed by dividing them into the same meaning, meaning denial, partial meaning, extended meaning, corresponding meaning, and loss of meaning. This study is meaningful in that it analyzes various morphological variations of proverbs targeting actual language data and categorizes the pattern of meaning change accordingly. This study argues for revisiting learner's mother tongue as efficient way of teaching second language writing. A decades-long oppression for using learner's mother tongue in second and foreign language teaching has been occurred since the approach remind trainers and researchers of the grammar translation method, notorious for its ineffectiveness on oral conversation, learner autonomy, and mother tongue interference. However, translation in language learning and teaching(TILT) revives the mediation of mother tongue of learners in the view of multilingualism and learner identity. It considers mother tongue of a learner as a resource of linguistic repertoire. Also this approach asserts three kinds of language teaching idea: pedagogical translation, code-switching, internal translation. This study only focuses on pedagogical translation, which can be suitable for second language writing model. In line with this perspective, this model also provides parallel corpus to the learner directly that students can exploit both their mother tongue and target language with a method of data-driven learning. The purpose of this study is to critically examine the linguistic facts that acted to define as idiomatic orthography in Korean loanword orthography. Currently, the orthography only stipulates that "the scope and usage of (the idiomatic notation) are separately determined" for defining idiomatic notation. These ambiguous expressions produce unnecessary misunderstandings for the public. In this study, I tried to systematically classify the factors that influenced idiomatic orthography. In addition, from a normative literacy point of view, I tried to propose a policy plan to promote the public's persuasive power over idiomatic notation and to have normative systematicity. To this end, this study selected foreign idiomatic name and inductively analyzed the factors that influenced its orthography. As a result, I was able to classify the criteria into seven categories, and based on this, I sought effective improvement measures according to each standard. This study is significant in that it has suggested specific measures to promote the systematicity of foreign idiomatic notation, which has only been partially discussed so far. These efforts are essential to cultivate literacy of the people. Through this, it will be possible to gradually improve the language attitude of the tongues toward Korean loanword orthography. This paper is to clarify the Korean idiomatic expression in the perception of understanding strategies for Myanmar learners. Idiomatic expressions are difficult to grasp the meaning because it cannot know by combining of word components. Therefore, Myanmar learners have a lot of difficulty in understanding Korean idiomatic expressions. In order to solve these difficulties, it is necessary to review Korean idiomatic expression which the strategies are used Myanmar learners. This study was conducted using an evaluation paper on body idiomatic expressions using 39 learners of level 3 or above. In order to confirm the understanding strategies of Myanmar learners for idiomatic expressions, it made with 5 types of perception questions and 10 types of understanding and 10 types of understanding strategies questions. Through this evaluation sheet, we can overview the strategies that are used by Myanmar learners to understand idiomatic expressions and intend to contribute to the preparation of a new educational method on idiomatic expressions for Myanmar learners. This paper aims to analyze the main contents and operation method of the teacher education curriculum between KFL and FLE. Based on this, this study aims to draw improvement directions for training KFL teachers. France has a long history of spreading its own language and structured systems and programs for training French language teachers. In Korea, the discussion on the main contents and operating method of education curriculum for KFL teacchers began starting from 2005 when the Framework Act on the National Language was made, especially in degree courses. In the meantime, the demands for KFL and social environments have changed and simultaneously the role of KFL teachers is also changing. With the recent spread of Korean language and Korean culture, the need for KFL teachers of superior ability is increasing. Accordingly this paper analyzes the main contents and operation method of the FLE teacher education curriculum in France and based on this, draw suggestions for training Korean teachers as a Korean language and culture expert in the global age and propose improvement directions for training KFL teachers. This study was conducted under the assumption that parents of multicultural families are not only caregivers but also the first language educators. This study provided topics to promote conversation between parents and children from multicultural families and explored teaching-learning models for bilingual education (Korean-mother tongue). The research question for this is how about a teaching-learning model for bilingual education for children from multicultural families? For this problem, a tandem learning model was proposed that encourages companion language education in multicultural families so that parents and children of multicultural families can naturally learn Korean and their mother tongue, which can be a solution to their psychological and emotional difficulties, poor learning, and school maladjustment. This study examines the use of premodern Korean stories in Korean language education, focusing on the stories in Korean textbooks for foreign learners. Thirty premodern Korean stories are found in thirty-one textbooks issued by thirteen universities. The examination of learning activities reveals that 1) premodern stories are adopted for passive reading and listening activities. 2) post-activities primarily aim to increase speaking fluency. 3) activities related to language knowledge are relatively weak. Regarding the contents, 1) the original genre of the stories is mostly folktale, and the original language is native Korean. 2) the stories took the features of children's literature. Finally, 3) recent textbooks contain texts and activities that require learners' critical thinking and readings of the stories from contemporary perspectives. (Yonsei University)

The purpose of this study is to provide specific guidelines for the production of contents for Korean grammar teaching so that teachers in charge of various Korean language education can perform flipped learning. In addition, we would like to propose an digital worksheets made and a learning management system as an education platform for the efficient operation of Korean flipped learning. To this end, a case study based on flipped learning for grammar education in Korean language education was reviewed. In addition, through the second language acquisition models of VanPatten(1996) and Gass(1997), the input processing process in which learners recognize input and understand the meaning of its form and convert to intake. Through this, the composition and production method of flipped learning-based Korean grammar education materials through structured input activities were proposed. It also introduced the advantages of TeacherMade as an digital worksheets made and Google Classroom as an education platform. This discussion is expected to be meaningful as a basic data for research on the development of grammar education materials at a time when ICT-based Korean language education is further accelerated. And we hope that interest in Korean grammar teaching methodology or teaching content production will continue more actively. (Yonsei University)

The purpose of this study is to develop a Chinese-Korean translation quality evaluation criteria for translation students. The criteria was developed following 3 procedures. First, existing translation quality criteria was reviewed. A new model was built with 3 components-`meaning transfer', `target language norms', `idiomatic expressions'-and 6 sub-elements with 10 items. Second, the model was applied to analyze the students' translation, for checking the adaptation of the items and the omitted or repeated items. Third, based on the data, this study developed a Chinese-Korean translation quality evaluation criteria with 3 components, 5 sub-elements and 9 items: 1 item for unjustified omission or addition, 2 items for distortion, 2 items for accuracy of target language norms, 3 items for appropriacy of idiomatic expressions, and 1 item for appropriacy of text type. This study opens new perspective for evaluation in translation education and provides a criteria for Chinese-Korean translation quality evaluation based on the error analysis. In the study, the Chinese resultative complements are classified according to the extent of grammaticalization. By dividing the resultative complements into three categories - those that fully maintain meaning, those that partially lose meaning, and those that have lost all meaning - the study aims to examine the tangible differences from the transfer methods in Korean translation. Also, it was found that the resultative complements corresponding to the three categories showed tangible differences in translation strategies from Korean translation to different Korean Transfer methods. Also, from the translation perspective, it is intended to contribute to Chinese Korean learners' interpretation and translation education by understanding the method and strategy of translation for the Chinese resultative complement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of recognition and satisfaction of Chinese teachers in terms of the teaching contents of passive expression in Korean textbooks. Based on the result, this study further aims to analyze the representative Korean textbooks. For this purpose, this article first reviewed previous literature on Korean passive expression education. Next, introduced the survey participants, data collection tools, and analysis methods. Then analyzed the results of the survey on the recognition and satisfaction of teachers for each item in terms of five aspects: arrangement, presentation, explanation, example sentences, and exercises. At the same time, this article analyzed the teaching contents of passive expression in three textbooks that were commonly used by teachers. Finally, based on the results of the survey and textbook analysis, several suggestions were presented on the direction of improving the teaching contents of passive expression. To briefly summarize the research results, the recognition of the importance of all 25 items in the questionnaire is higher than that of satisfaction. Among the five parts, the recognition of example sentences and exercises is very high, but the satisfaction is lower than the average level. Through the analysis of the textbooks, it can be found that example sentences and exercises are not diverse enough. Hopefully, this study will serve as a reference for improving the teaching contents of passive expression in Korean textbooks in the future. (Seoul National University)
