This numerical study investigates the effects of the size of the natural smoke vent area (10% and 1% of the floor area) and the location of the fire source (i.e., at the side and center of the stage) on the temperature distribution in the compartment and velocity distribution and mass flow rate of flow through a natural smoke vent for a reduced-scale model of a theater stage. Then, the mass flow rate of outflow through the natural smoke vent in the event of a fire for a real-scale theater stage was examined. The case with the larger natural smoke vent area and central fire source location showed lower temperature distributions and higher mass flow rates of outflow and inflow than the case with the smaller natural smoke vent area and side fire source location. The trends of the temperature distributions were closely related to those of the mass flow rates for the outflow and inflow. Additionally, the case with the larger natural smoke vent area and central fire source location exhibited the most non-uniform flow velocity distribution in all cases tested. A bidirectional flow, in which the outflow and inflow occur simultaneously, was observed through the natural smoke vent. In the event of a fire situation in a real-scale theater stage, it was predicted that the case with the larger natural smoke vent area and central fire source location would have a mass flow rate of outflow that is 43.53 times higher than that of the case with the smaller natural smoke vent area and side fire source location. The present results indicate that the natural smoke vent location should be determined by considering the location in a theater stage where a fire can occur.

Circuit breakers are a crucial factor in ensuring the safety of a Direct Current (DC) grid. One type of DC circuit breaker, the Z-source DC circuit breaker (ZCB), uses a thyristor, which is a type of semiconductor switch. In the event of a fault in the circuit, the ZCB isolates the fault by generating a zero crossing current in the thyristor. The thyristor quickly and actively isolates the fault while generating a zero crossing current, but thyristor switch cannot control turn-off and the allowable current is lower than the current of the mechanical switch. Therefore, it is best to use a mechanical switch with a high allowable current capacity that is capable of on/off control. Due to the slow reaction time of mechanical switches, they may not isolate the fault during the zero crossing current time interval created by the existing circuit. In this case, the zero crossing current time can be increased by using the property that hinders the rapid change in the current of the inductor. This paper will explore whether adding system inductance to increase the zero crossing current time interval is a solution to this problem. The simulation of changing inductor and capacitor (LC) of the circuit is repeated to find an optimal change in the zero crossing current time according to the LC change and provides an inductor and capacitor range optimized for a specific load. The inductor and capacitor range are expected to provide optimization information in the form LC values for future applications of ZCB's using a mechanical switch.

To stem the ever-prevalent occurrence of industrial accidents in the construction industry, which is emerging as a social problem, efforts must be invested by various stakeholders. Specifically, among stakeholders, the orderer is at the top of a project's decision-making structure. Therefore, the orderer's awareness of safety and health directly affects the process of securing the safety of the overall construction site. In this light, the present study aims to identify differences in the perceptions of each stakeholder regarding the obligatory safety and health measures for clients that have recently been introduced. In addition, it suggests specific implementation plans in the Korean context. The data used for analysis were collected through a survey targeting stakeholders such as orderers, safety managers, and site managers, and the collected data were quantitatively reviewed by using multivariate analysis methods such as analysis of variance. As a result of the analysis, the introduction of safety and health obligations for the owner was found to be necessary, and the designation and operation of safety and health experts as an action plan was deemed reasonable. The authors expect that the results of this study can be used as basic data for revising the related regulations in Korea. Moreover, as a further study, a review of the effectiveness after improving regulations would contribute strongly to the domain.

The death rate in the construction industry, which is more than twice that of other industries, increases the need to solve chronic safety problems. In a situation in which the safety management measures that have been maintained thus far are unable to reduce construction accidents, the introduction of smart construction safety technology (SCST) that reflects the 4th industrial technology is required for the safety management of workers. Large corporations or public institutions have introduced SCST and are operating pilot sites, but SCST is still in its infancy and there have yet to exist field data regarding necessity and effectiveness. In this study, the concept of SCST, which has still to be established, is defined, and the actual condition of SCST was analyzed through a survey. Through the analysis of the necessity of SCST introduction, convenience, and effectiveness before and after its application, problems such as problems from the field point of view as well as other factors hindering the introduction of such technology are derived in detail. In addition, an effective combination of technologies for safety management at the current level is determined and an activation plan is presented.

Bridge engineering documents have essential contents that must be referenced continuously throughout a structure's entire life cycle, but research related to the quality of the contents is still lacking. XML schema matching is an excellent technique to improve the quality of stored data; however, it takes excessive computing time when applied to documents with many contents and a deep hierarchical structure, such as bridge engineering documents. Moreover, it requires a manual parametric study for matching elements' weight factors, maintaining a high matching accuracy. This study proposes an efficient weight-factor determination method based on an artificial neural network (ANN) model using the simplified XML schema-matching method proposed in a previous research to reduce the computing time. The ANN model was generated and verified using 580 data of document properties, weight factors, and matching accuracy. The proposed ANN-based schema-matching method showed superiority in terms of accuracy and efficiency compared with the previous study on XML schema matching for bridge engineering documents.

In Korea, companies which have work-related musculoskeletal burden works should have conducted legal risk assessments every three years from 2004 onwards. However, due to problems with the legal definition of work-related musculoskeletal burden works, some companies may have been exempted from the risk assessment even though their workers still experience work-related musculoskeletal pain. For example, the manufacturing process used by a particular semiconductor manufacturing company involved a great deal of legal musculoskeletal bueden works. However, this company eliminated the musculoskeletal burden works by continuously introducing automated processes, and finally, in 2016, all work which was legally defined as musculoskeletal burden work were removed from the company's manufacturing process. Nevertheless, in a 2016 survey, 9.6% of the company's workers still complained of musculoskeletal pain, and in a 2019 survey this proportion actually increased to 15.7%. This incident demonstrates the limitations and problems of the current legal risk assessment of work-related musculoskeletal burden work. Therefore, this study proposes two improvements to solve these problems. Firstly, it is necessary to broaden the current legal definition of work-related musculoskeletal burden works. For example, vibration risk factors and push/pull tasks that are currently missing from the definition should be included. Secondly, it is proposed that a survey on musculoskeletal pain should be conducted for all workers, regardless of whether they are engaged in musculoskeletal burden works. The results of this study could be used to improve the legal risk assessment of work-related musculoskeletal burden works.

The correlation between the Military Service Adaptation Test and the Biometric Index is studied herein with the aim of preventing military safety accidents. The subjects were 36 soldiers under the age of 25 years. Based on the results of the service adaptation test, the soldiers who did not adapt to the service were distinguished. First, there was a significant difference in brain stress among the brain wave indicators of the general group and the group of interest. Second, the higher the left and right brain imbalance index among the brain wave indicators, the higher was the level of empathy shown by the subjects. Third, among the pulse indicators, the subjects with high cumulative fatigue levels were found to have high levels of emotion (anxiety, depression, physicalization) and relationship isolation (indifference, sensitivity). Based on these results, the implications of this study and suggestions for future research are discussed.

The study measured a subway construction worker's Macpa stress by Heart Rate Variability measuring instrument and conducted a survey of Korean job stress from subway construction workers. Also, the study analyzed the relationship between Macpa stress index and Korean job stress result and suggested managing stress method for each item. According to National Statistical Office data, the first line subway in Seoul was started to open in 1974. The extended total length is 996 kilometers until 2019. Many aged workers are currently working at subway construction sites due to the avoidance of young workers since the past until now. It means that the elderly has a substantial portion among subway construction workers. The productivity has been adversely affected by health problems due to the aging of workers, job stress due to heavy work, and personal health problems. So, the regulation and policies on job stress health management are being strengthened. The data were measured Macpa stress by machine measuring heart rate variability and conducted Korean job stress survey(shortened) from Sa-sang to Ha-dan line Busan subway construction workers for analyzing the relationship. Independent variable were age, job duration, job position, employment type, working type in this study. Macpa's dependent variable was stress index and Korean job stress survey(shortened)'s dependent variables were job requirements, job autonomy, relationship conflict, job instability, organizational structure, inappropriate compensation, working place culture, and total score. SPSS 12.0 K Statistics Program was used for statistical analysis. Kruskal-wallis test, a nonparametric statistical analysis, was used because the data are difficult to be assumed as normal distribution. As a result, the paper indicated the significant correlation between Macpa stress index and Korean job stress(short version). The elderly workers presented higher Macpa index and higher job stress due to aging and heavy-duty work. The majority workers were daily workers who had unstable working condition and uncertainty about the future. The study suggested a manual that could reduce job stress for subway construction workers and future study deriving management tool through analyzing job stress factor is necessary.

The total number of Korean restaurants using delivery applications has substantially increased from 7.6% in 2018 to 11.2% in 2019. In 2020, the gross sales in the food delivery service market reached approximately 17 trillion won; this amount is virtually six times that in 2017 (i.e., 2 trillion won). Meanwhile, the annual average death toll of motorcycle riders increased by 3.5%, whereas the number of deaths due to other traffic accidents decreased by 8.2%. Consequently, the foregoing has become a critical social problem. Despite the continuing increase in the number of delivery riders due to the rapid expansion of the delivery industry, no appropriate safety management system has been established. Moreover, the government is experiencing difficulties in assessing the exact situation because of the absence of competent authority. In this study, fundamental data on the characteristics of delivery work and motorcycle accidents were collected through surveys and interviews; then, the influencing factors of traffic accidents were analyzed. Different influencing factors were identified: work experience as a rider; number of deliveries; whether to accept delivery requests in transit; manner of accepting delivery requests; and traffic law violations, such as speeding (for faster delivery) and running a red light. Because the motorcycle delivery industry has a relatively low job-entry barrier (i.e., special qualifications are not required), the riding skills of riders must be improved, and delivery companies must be technically developed to achieve a safe working environment. The results of this study can be utilized as fundamental data for system development or structural improvement of the delivery industry.

In the risk assessment of urban railway systems, a hazard log is created by identifying hazards from accident and failure data. Then, based on a risk matrix, evaluators analyze the frequency and severity of the occurrence of the hazards, conduct the risk assessment, and then establish safety measures for the risk factors prior to risk control. However, because subjective judgments based on the evaluators' experiences affect the risk assessment results, a more objective and automated risk assessment system must be established. In this study, we propose a risk assessment model in which an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), which is combined in artificial neural networks (ANN) and fuzzy inference system (FIS), is applied to the risk assessment of urban railway systems. The newly proposed model is more objective and automated, alleviating the limitations of risk assessments that use a risk matrix. In addition, the reliability of the model was verified by comparing the risk assessment results and risk control priorities between the newly proposed ANFIS-based risk assessment model and the risk assessment using a risk matrix. Results of the comparison indicate that a high level of accuracy was demonstrated in the risk assessment results of the proposed model, and uncertainty and subjectivity were mitigated in the risk control priority.
