Background: This study was conducted to identify the level of communication competency essential for cooperation with health care teams and self-directed learning ability necessary to solve problems efficiently. Furthermore, an analysis was conducted to confirm the effect of communication competency upon self-directed learning ability among nursing students.
Methods: This study involved 321 nursing students. Data collection was conducted through online survey about the communication competency and the self-directed learning ability.
Results: The main results were as follows. The communication competency score of participants was 3.53±0.54(M±SD) out of 5 points and the self-directed learning ability score was 3.71±0.55. There was a significant correlation between communication competency and all domains of self-directed learning ability. As a result of simple linear regression analysis, higher communication skills also increased self-directed learning skills, showing 38.3% explanatory power.
Conclusion: There is a need for teaching and learning strategy that allows students who have low grades and low major interest, and chose a major by recommendation to more actively engage in learning activities. Since the self-directed learning ability can be improved by improving communication competency, programs for communication, continuity of learning activities and utilization of learning resources are needed.

Purpose : The COVID-19 vaccine was developed and approved quickly, and verification was carried out simultaneously with vaccination. Many patients have visited the emergency department (ED) complaining of severe adverse reactions. However, only a few cases are severe adverse reactions. We were concerned that this might be the effect of excessive media coverage. Therefore, we would like to analyze the correlation between the number of articles and the number of patients who visited ED.
Methods : This study was conducted on patients who visited the ED from March 2021 to October 2021. The subjects were selected through keywords “vaccine”, “side effect”, “adverse reactions”, “Pfizer”, “AstraZeneca”, “Moderna”, “Janssen” and total 1,705 patients were enrolled. The number of articles was analyzed through Big Kinds. In addition, the correlation between the number of patients visited ED, and the number of vaccinated people was investigated.
Results : There was no statistically significant correlation between the number of articles and the number of patients who visited ED. However, the number of vaccinated people and the number of patients who visited ED showed a significant relationship.
Conclusion : In this study, the number of articles did not affect the number of patients visiting the ED. However, media reports of adverse reactions were continued, and it instilled fear in people. Therefore, it is important to provide accurate information from the media to prevent overcrowding of ED.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to develop an online global nursing competency promoting program for students in the college of nursing, and to identify the effectiveness by analyzing participation cases.
Methods : Before program development, essential elements were derived from existing programs through a meeting between graduates and experts who participated in the program. After recruiting students to participate, the program was developed after a pre-meeting with the students about the components of the program. The program was on August 9th-13th, 2021. After the program, satisfaction surveys, in-depth interviews, and participant diaries were analyzed.
Results : Satisfaction of the global nursing competency promoting program was an average of 4.10±0.96 for the program application process and 4.36±0.84 for program effectiveness and 4.43±1.07 for the global mind. As a result of qualitative data analysis, 8 subject areas and 26 categories were derived. It was divided into program elements and students' changes, four in each element. In the students' changes elements, curiosity and fear before the program, active attitude and open mind through friends' encouragement, curiosity arising from the same experience and different perspectives, and developing friendship from responsibility were included. In the program elements, the subject areas were pre-requisite element, conversation facilitating element, difficult element, and online program evaluation.
Conclusion : Online global nursing competency promoting program needs to be change according to the purpose of the students. In addition, it is necessary to deviate from the existing standardized operating method and to identify and participate in the needs of the students in the long term.

Purpose : Communication skill of healthcare providers is important in quality care. The purpose of this study are to identify intervention its outcome for improving communication skills among nurses.
Methods : This is a literature review databases were searched, including RISS, KISS, KMbase, KoreaMed in Korea. The strategy was established in search terms included nurses, communication, programs and literature reviewed during published in the last 10 years.
Results : We including 9 studies, conducted mainly in hospital settings. Most communication programs consist of lecture, role play, feed-back, discussion. As a results of, communication programs appear to be effective in improving communication skills for nurses. We found evidence to support a beneficial effect of communication programs on nurses' communication skills, self-efficacy, interpersonal relationship, emotional intelligence and intershift performance.
Conclusion : Study results indicate that educational and training programs are needed to increase communication skills for nurses within various clinical contexts. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to conduct systematic review, meta-analysis research so that the effects of communication programs of clinical nurses can be systematically identified.

Purpose : This study examines how the three factors of the planned behavior theory, attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control affect the Chinese 20s' intention to share news related to COVID-19 and to cope with it.
Methods : A total of 323 Chinese respondents in their 20s participated in the online survey.
Results : As a result of the study, it was found that only subjective norms affect the intention to share news related to COVID-19, excluding attitudes and perceived behavioral control. Also, among the planned action factors, only subjective norms and perceived behavioral control were found to have a significant relationship with behavioral intentions to cope with COVID-19.
Conclusion : When a pandemic such as COVID-19 occurs, news users seem to be sharing news about COVID-19 conscious of their reference group, and the higher their perceived behavioral control over their coping behavior, the more they take action.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of doctor-patient communication type and hospital's SR(Social Responsibility) evaluation on the hospital's brand equity awareness and the patient's intention on continued use of its services.
Methods : A causal relationship between each variable was identified through a survey of a total of 160 outpatients at the hospital.
Results : As a result of the analysis, among the communication types between doctors and patients, only the cooperative type and the professional type showed a positive causal relationship with brand awareness, image and quality regarding hospital's brand equity awareness. Also, in case of patient's intention on continued use of medical services, only emotional and professional communication types showed statistically significant influence. In case of hospital SR evaluation, it was confirmed that only the evaluation of economic responsibility and ethical responsibility had a positive effect on both brand equity awareness and intention on continued use of medical services. Finally, as for the effect that hospital brand equity awareness has on the patient's intention to continue using services, only the brand quality shows a significant effect.
Conclusion : Quality evaluation of medical services shows that there are some core values and functions that cannot be compromised in operating a medical business.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify mediating effect of empathy between bullying and clinical competency in nursing students.
Methods : The subjects of this study were a total of 140 fourth-grade nursing students in five universities located in D city of South Korea. Data were collected from March 12 to April 17 in 2019 using structured questionnaires and analyzed with IBM SPSS 25.0 program. Data were analyzed by the independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regression following the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test for identifying mediating effects.
Results : Bullying was negatively correlated with empathy (r=-.40, p<.001) and clinical competency (r=-.46, p<.001). Empathy was positively correlated with clinical competency (r=.45, p<.001). Furthermore, empathy completely had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between bullying and clinical competency.
Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, the empathy of nursing students is very valuable. To improve the clinical performance of nursing students, efforts to reduce the experience of bullying and improve empathy should be continued.

Purpose : This study investigates the effects of a tabletop simulation game called Friday Night at the Emergency Room (FNER) on the premise that experience leads to systems thinking and innovative behavior in hospital staff.
Methods : This is a one-group pretest-posttest design study for 17 hospital staff. The tools were the systems thinking scale (STS; 20 questions), an innovative behavior questionnaire (IBQ; 9 questions), and a self-reflection essay. Paired t-test, Cohen's d effect sizes, and content analysis were used for the analysis.
Results : After participating in the FNER game for hospital staff, systems thinking did not significantly improve, and the effect size of the program was low. But innovative behavior significantly improved, and the effect size of the program was high. Because of the contents of the self-reflection essay analysis, the importance of teamwork included the understanding of the hospital system.
Conclusion : The educational effects of simulation-based FNER games are different depending on the organizational experience. Hospital educators should consider conducting complex problem-solving exercises, such as FNER, on new employees or early-experienced hospital staff to enhance and challenge the staff's systems thinking and innovative behavior.

Purpose : How a doctor communicates with a patient is very critical not only to the delivery of an accurate information but also to the relationship management between them. This study aims at investigating doctors' relationship management strategies to develop rapport in diagnosis communication with their patients by analyzing dialogues collected from currently aired Korean drama < Hospital Playlist > and previous studies.
Methods : By using Brown & Levinson's politeness and Spensor-Oatey's rapport management as theoretical frameworks, it categorized doctors' relationship management strategies suggested by Korean medical education and analyzed rapport management components utilized in the strategies. It also investigated the components and the domains affecting rapport between doctors and patients in the collected dialogues.
Results : Relationship management strategies recommended to doctors in Korean medical education were related with all of Spensor-Oatey's rapport management components: face, interactional goals and social rights/obligations management. In the dialogues collected from the drama, face management and stylistic domains were utilized more frequently to enhance the relationship compared to those from actual situation and simulation.
Conclusion : Considering diagnosis communication is a face-threatening act to a patient, a doctor needs to utilize various relationship management strategies carefully and effectively. These results will help doctors to review their dialogues with patients and to improve their relationship with patients.

Purpose : The study was conducted to examine effects of nurses' communication styles perceived by surgical patients and their anxiety and uncertainty on patient satisfaction.
Methods : Data were collected by using a structuralized questionannaire which consists of nurses' communication style tool, State trail Anxiety Inventory(STAI), Mishel Uncertainty in Illiness scale, and patient satisfaction tool targeting on 276 surgical patients who were hospitalized in general wards from July 24, 2020 to December 18, 2020. The data analysis was done with the correlation analysis and the multiple regression analysis.
Results : Nurses' communication style perceived by surgical patients has found to have the most informative communication styles and the least authoritative communication style. And the variable which has the most effect on patient satisfaction was the affective communication style(β =.35, p<.001), followed by nurse communication importance perceived by surgical patients(β=.15, p=.001). And surgical patients' anxiety (β=-.15, p=.011) and uncertainty(β=-.13, p=.024) has found to have a negative effect on patient satisfaction.
Conclusion : The patient satisfaction got higher when the surgical patients perceived the Affective & informative communication styles among nurses' communication styles, and when they perceived the nurses' communication as important.

Purpose : The effectiveness of the interprofessional education(IPE) program has been evaluated with quantitative data. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of IPE using topic modeling technique in text network analysis tool as one of the qualitative data analysis methods.
Methods : In this study, 58 fourth-year students from medical, pharmacy, and nursing school participated in the IPE program. The IPE was conducted as a half day program centered on student activities of small group activities and role play. The role play scenario is about medical errors caused by health professional's negligence. Fifty-eight reflective essays were analyzed as qualitative data. topic modeling technique was used for the analysis.
Results : Four topics were derived from this study: experience of the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals (Topic 1), conflict situations and resolution among healthcare professionals in hospitals (Topic 2), empathize with the difficulties experienced by healthcare professionals through role play (Topic 3), and recognition of doctors' responsibilities in emergency situations (Topic 4). Topic 3 had the highest share of topics at 33.3%.
Conclusion : We found that IPE was an effective educational strategy for interprofessional collaboration. In addition, qualitative data such as reflective essays can be utilized to analyze the effectiveness of IPE.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of readiness for interporfessional learning before and after applying a simulation-based interprofessional education (sim-IPE) program among medical and nursing students.
Methods: This study used one-group pretest-posttest design. A sim-IPE program was implemented for 94 medical and 41 nursing students during half a day. The program was consisted of team building games, simulation, board games, and case discussion. The readiness for interprofessional learning scale (RIPLS) which is a 5-point Likert type and has four domains was used to assess students' perceptions pre- and post-IPE program. Also, students were requested to write three words that immediately came to mind when they saw a word of 'teamwork'. Data were analyzed by frequency, mean and standard deviation, paired t-test, and Cronbach's alpha.
Results: A total scores of RIPLS significantly increased from 78.3 to 86.7 points after implementing a simulation-based IPE program (t=-14.80, p<.001). Among the most submitted words by students, a ranking of 'communication' has risen from fifth pre-IPE to second post-IPE.
Conclusions: Based on the results form our study, a simulation-based IPE program provides a very valuable educational opportunity for students to increase positive attitude to interprofessional learning. A variety of IPE programs should be developed and incorporated in all healthcare professional curriculums.

Purpose: This descriptive research study was conducted to investigate the factors influencing self-care agency of disabled persons with chronic diseases.
Methods: The participants were 124 disabled persons with chronic diseases who were using a welfare center for the disabled in Seoul. Using a structured-questionnaire, the data was collected from April 15, to October 8, 2021. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, scheff tests, pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with the IBM SPSS/WIN 21.0 program.
Results: Self-care agency was positively correlated with the health literacy (r=.27, p=.002), social support (r=.38, p<.001) and perceived involvement in care (r=.28, p=.002). Factors influencing self-care agency were education (β=0.21, p=.014), social support (β=0.24, p=.006) and perceived involvement in care (β=0.17, p=.037). The input variables explained .241 of self-care agency.
Conclusion: The results of the study indicated that approaches focusing on enhancing perceived involvement in care and social support could potentially improve self-care agency of disabled persons with chronic diseases.

Background: There is a Korean expression for 'painful' such as suffering and pain. The Purpose of this study was to define two Korean concepts: “Go-tong(suffering)” and “Tong-jeung(pain)”.
Methods: First of all, it is necessary to organize the considerations on the whole-person in the humanities. Then, the two commonly used terms, “Go-tong” and “Tong-jeung”, were humanistically and contextually. Furthermore, a distinction between the two concepts was attempted for improved communication by health care provider and non-medical practitioner.
Conclusion: There is an intersecting element between Go-tong and Tong-jeung. Both of them also their own conceptually distinctive features. The term, Go-tong, focuses on causing damage and impairing physical discomfort, whereas Tong-jeung focuses more on damage to the integrity of the soul or mind. Through the way of using these two terms, i.e., these two conceptions, more improved communication can be achieved between health care provider and non-medical practitioner.

Background: Since nursing performance is related to the organizational performance of hospitals, this study was attempted to determine the effects of general characteristics, clinical nursing character, and self-efficacy of nurses working in hospitals on nursing performance.
Methods: The subjects were 150 nurses working in 3 general hospitals. Data collected through self-report questionnaires from January 4 to 18, 2021, were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0, and hierarchical regression analysis was performed to identify factors affecting nursing performance.
Results: In the final model, the experience of the nurse's current unit, clinical nursing character, and self-efficacy were found to be influencing factors on nursing performance. The explanatory power of the whole model was 53.6%.
Conclusion: Hospital administrators should carefully consider changing departments so that nurses can gain sufficient experience in the unit. In addition, it is necessary to develop and apply a program to strengthen clinical nursing character and enhance self-efficacy.

7입원 노인 우울 환자에 적용한 이야기치료 기반 회상요법의 파일럿 연구

Background: Reminiscence therapy is a form of psychotherapy that ameliorates elderly depression and mental stability. It is more effective when integrated with narrative therapy. This study examined the effects of narrative therapy-based reminiscence therapy on depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and self-integration among elderly depression patients admitted in an open psychiatric ward.
Method: We used a non-equivalent control group, a pre-/post-test design, and a convenience sampling method. The study was conducted in the open psychiatric ward of two hospitals from December 2016 to January 2018. The intervention program consisted of five sessions of 40 minutes each. The experimental group received the intervention for five consecutive days while the control group received standard care. We performed descriptive statistics, matched paired t-tests, and independent-sample t-tests to analyze the data.
Results: Fifty-six elderly patients from both hospitals completed the study (experimental group=26, control group=30). A statistically significant difference (t=2.45, p=.022) was found in pre-versus post-anxiety scores of the experimental group.
Conclusion: This study is meaningful, however, as it broadens the research horizon of intervention for elderly depression patients, especially those admitted to university hospitals. It serves as evidence for nursing intervention for elderly depression patients admitted to psychiatric wards.

8중학생의 그릿 영향요인: 자아탄력성과 정서지능을 중심으로

Backgroud: The purpose of this study is to help middle schoolers overcome difficulties by grasping the impact of their self-resilience and emotional intelligence on grit. Students can overcome these problems through passion, persistence and perseverance. That concept is called “grit”. Therefore, this study is intended to provide basic data for finding approaches and training methods for maintaining internal motivation.
Method: This is a descriptive study that surveyed 186 middle school students in July 2020 with 14 questions on self-resilience, 30 questions on emotional intelligence, and 12 questions on grit. For statistical analysis, SPSS Statistics 22.0 Program was used and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results: Among grit's sub-areas, consistent effort was significantly associated with gender (male students scored higher than female students (t=2.20, p=.029), scores were higher when parental relationships were intimate (F=5.88, p=.003), and the closer the relationship with the homeroom teacher, the higher the score (F=3.51, p=.032). The regression model in this study was statistically significant (F=26.730, p<.001), and the variables that influenced steady effort (Grit) were self-resilience (β=.331, p<.001), and self-emotion regulation (β=.290, p<.001), sex (β=-.142, p=.024), the explanatory power of the variable's continuous effort was 29.4%.
Conclusion: The middle school age is the time to discover life goals and dreams. Grit is persistent efforts to achieve our goals and in order to raise the level of Grit, we need to develop and provide ongoing curriculum and tailored school programs that will increase self-resilience and self-emotion control skills.

Background: This study aims to identify the differences between climacteric symptoms, climacteric symptoms management, and well-being according to the D-type personality, and to determine the degree of influence of the D-type personality on the well-being.
Methods: A correlational, cross-sectional research design was used with 169 middle-aged women. Data collection was performed using a structured questionnaire between July and August 2020. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, X2-test, ANCOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed with the SPSS WIN 27.0 program.
Results: Type-D personality was identified in 34.3%. Type D women had significantly higher climacteric symptoms, lower climacteric symptoms management and well-being compared with non-type D women. In addition, type D personality had the strongest association with well-being among middle-aged women, followed by climacteric symptoms and climacteric symptoms management.
Conclusions: Interventions that reflect climacteric symptoms and climacteric symptoms management, including type-D personality, may help enhance well-being for middle-aged women in nursing practice.

Background: Close reading is used in medical education to improve doctors' listening, empathy and relationship-building ability, but no method for close reading has been suggested yet. In order to efficiently use close reading in medical education, it is essential to present concrete methods of close reading.
Methods: The development of the Close Reading methods is based on the basic principles of text interpretation, resources of knowledge in the evaluation process and the theory of variation analysis presented by Lucius-Hoene and Deppermann.
Results: The basic principles of text interpretation include data-orientedness, reconstructive attitude, prerequisites for meaningfulness, multilevel consideration, sequence analysis and contextuality, circularity and coherence, explicativity and argumentativity. As knowledge resources there is everyday knowledge, ethographic-historical knowledge, knowledge about linguistic-communicative phenomena, theoretical knowledge. Variation analysis includes substitution, deletion, permutation, insertion.
Conclusion: The basic principle of text interpretation is worth using as guidelines for text interpretation that readers of close reading should pay attention to. Knowledge resources can be used as the resources and argument for text interpretation. And the Variation analysis can be used to verify the validity of the close reading results. All of these can also be used for teachers in assessing and providing feedback to learners.
