The purpose of this study is to analyze reporting frames of the Chinese media on COVID-19. It is no exaggeration to say that the People's Daily is responding to and promoting the outbreak of infectious diseases by reflecting the ideology of the central leadership as a party organization. In particular, the editorials of state-run media reflect the political perceptions and positions of the central leadership. To this end, we looked at the Korean translation of the People's Network editorial, the official site of the People's Daily. With an analysis of a total of 88 Korean translations related to COVID-19, it was confirmed that the Chinese media's reporting frame on COVID-19 was focused on hate discourse. The fact that the People's Network's overseas version of the editorial set a lot of COVID-19 agendas suggests that the central leadership valued the COVID-19 agenda. The analysis results show that the Korean translations of the People's Network in the early stages of COVID-19 used expressions from the Korean media such as 'Wuhan pneumonia' and 'Infection from China,‘ There has been a growing number of reports blaming 'them' for the infection.

초록보기

Licensed musical Rent has been a very successful musical in Korea. However, negative criticism about the delivery of translated lyrics has been dominant according to the bulletin board of the musical's ticketing website. Therefore, this study aims to investigate translation strategies of the lyrics of the musical from the perspective of singability - the number of syllables, vocal singability, rhythm and stresses, and rhymes - in order to identify what contributed to the audience's experience. The analysis results show an increase in the number of syllables in the TT, meaning syllables were added or notes were splitted, inappropriate placements of Korean vowels for high-pitch or ascending notes, and stress mismatches between ST and TT, thus making it difficult for the audience to distinguish the lyrics. However, proper Korean consonants were used for end-of-phrase notes, and the translator's efforts to deliver the rhyme effect by using compensation strategies including creating new rhymes were witnessed. This study is expected to contribute to the expansion of research of musical translation into Korean especially in the singability area and hopefully to improving future translations of licensed musicals. However, since the data is limited to Rent performed in 2004, more recent developments in musical translation have yet to be studied.

초록보기

This study insists that hermeneutics should be actively used for translation, focusing on Russian-Korean translation. Gadamer argued that in the interpretation of texts, an individual's understanding formed in the traditional sphere of influence works. Uulike the theological hermeneutics of previous hermeneutics researchers, Gadamer in his hermeneutics argues that only acquiring related to experience and existence forms the world of true hermeneutics. He says that the text must be approached from a hermeneutical point of view, and what is simply being written is an isolated thing. In other words, a text can be reproduced through interpreters. In this study, it is argued that the translation of the hermeneutic dimension is divided into Partial reprocessing and Complete reprocessing. It means both Partial and Complete reprocessing should be reprocessed in accordance with TL's world view. However, Partial reprocessing means that the expression of ST is reflected as much as possible, but is derived as an expression suitable for TL, and Complete reprocessing means that the meaning represented by the ST expression is accepted, but completely replaced with an expression suitable for TL. However, under the premise of hermeneutic translation tailored to the worldview of TL users, the meaning of ST should not be distorted. Hermeneutic translation is for the purpose of clearly grasping and conveying the implications of ST and the intention of the author, but does not create a new meaning in TT.

초록보기

With the rapid increase in global interaction coupled with the explosion of digital contents, human translation alone cannot keep up with the translation needs of today; machine translated texts have been increasingly used as a raw translation to be post-edited by language service providers(LSP). With this as a backdrop, this study aims to investigate students' attitudes on the educational benefits of performing MTPE(machine translation post-editing) in undergraduate translation courses and what an effective post-editing (PE) workflow should be. Students' responses to survey questions and reflective comments on machine translation (MT) use were analyzed to find out about learners' perceptions and the effectiveness of an MTPE training model. Students' responses suggest that they are satisfied with the MT quality and feel positive toward MT use in translation even though they showed a tendency to use MT to obtain corresponding expressions rather than enjoying post-editing activities.

초록보기

The aim of this paper is to answer the question, 'how can we define the ultimate goal of translation studies, if we are allowed to discuss it metaphysically?' To answer the question, this paper identifies periodical implications and universal values of a current translation methodology that were inherited from traditional hermeneutics. As philosophical hermeneutics has developed, it has shown that interpretation is one way of understanding and readers understand a text based on their preunderstanding. Paul Ricoeur expanded the scope of text hermeneutics to translation, and proposed the notion of 'linguistic hospitality' as an attempt to tackle the issue of untranslatable texts, which is one of the main subjects in translation studies. As a first reader, a translator meets a text and then creates a new product, a translated work. It can be the most ideal translation for a translator to harmonize unique characteristics of a source language with those of a target language, especially when the two languages are not compatible with each other. The process of adapting the characteristics of a native language to those of another language is similar to offering a hospitality of a different culture. Through the process, the understanding of two different cultures is broaden and when linguistic hospitality is added to this, the better quality of translation is finally obtained, albeit not a perfect one. Ricoeur notes that reader's identity can be established by a text-reading. Based on his perspective, this paper argues that a problem of translation can extend to a discourse on identity of a translator, assuming that the translator is the first reader of a text. In this sense, it is also reasonable to discuss the translator's identity when addressing a problem of translation. This argument is also supported by 'the death of the author' proposed by Roland Barthes' (French writer and philosopher). He focuses on the fact that readers can reinterpret an original text, and by employing his viewpoint, this paper argues that a role of translator that has been hidden by the original authorship (in Venuti's terminology) can be extended. When escaping from the perspective of a modernist that places emphasis on the author and then giving a translator an independent hermeneutic space, it is believed that translation studies should stand alone as one independent academic field.

As K-Webtoons gain global popularity, global fans captivated by K-Webtoons ask for more content to be translated faster than before. In webtoons, onomatopoeia and mimetic words play a crucial role in creating vivid imagery and strengthening sensory effect, so studies on how to translate onomatopoeia/mimetic words in webtoons would contribute to the globalization of the K-Webtoons. Previous research on onomatopoeia translation has mostly focused on onomatopoeia/mimetic words in literary texts such as novels or poetry. Onomatopoeia/mimetic word translation in webtoon is quite different from that in literary texts; therefore, this study first investigates how webtoon onomatopoeia/mimetic words are translated into English. Second, as the demand for webtoon translation rises, faster translation is also getting important. To satisfy this rising demand, it is explored to utilize machine translation in webtoon translation. Webtoon machine translation outcome reveals that it has limitations in translating polysemous onomatopoeia/mimetic words. Hence, in the final chapter, the concept and development of MMT is introduced as a way of complementing the limitation of existing machine translation and specific ways to enhance the performance of MMT are suggested.

초록보기

This study compared and analyzed the English translations of No Apology and Hysteria in Kim Yideum's collection of poems Hysteria. In particular, the translation of anger emotions was intensively analyzed based on Lakoff & Kövecses' 'cognitive models' and 'Prototypical Anger Scenario.' In the original work of Kim Yideum, the poetic narrator shows a habitual attitude to control herself by prioritizing external situations over internal emotions, solidarity with the suspect, and compliance with the sense of defeat. However, the speaker in the English translation works shows the characteristics of an immediate expression of one's emotions and a direct explosion. The narrator has an attitude of expressing anger, protesting, and punishing society that contradicts unreasonable situations, and focuses on her situation and emotional changes rather than considering external situations or harmonizing with others and society. A more detailed and deeper understanding of Kim Yideum's poetry world in the context of the moral values, and gender characteristics of Koreans will allow new perspectives to emerge from translated works.

The film dialogue helps guide the response of the spectator. Often dialogue is a tool for controlling viewers' evaluation and emotion. And appraisal theory is the most fully developed model of evaluation. Thus it can show how viewers understand and evaluate specific situations or characters in films. This study aims to put forward the quantitative and qualitative shift of appraisal between Korean films and their dubbed versions. The findings show English-dubbed Korean films have far more appraisals than original Korean films do. The study presents three classifications where the use of appraisal comes into play: appraisals in the target text replace culture-specific items in the source text; appraisals evaluate situations in film; or appraisals evaluate film characters. By using appraisal much more in the target text, dubbed versions provide the target audience with a more explicit understanding of source culture, film plot and characters.

P'ansori, a traditional Korean genre of musical storytelling, is a representative cultural property recognized by the government and UNESCO. Still, p'ansori in translation has not received sound scholarly treatment. Against this backdrop, the present study analyzes Marshall R. Pihl's translation of “Sim Ch'ŏng ka” (The Song of Shim Ch'ŏng) and discusses how p'ansori can be enriched in English translation. The Song of Shim Ch'ŏng, the first annotated English translation of a full p'ansori performance text, is in the eighth chapter of The Korean Singer of Tales (1994), Pihl's seminal book on p'ansori. This translation and related peritexts are examined in the following areas: (1) the title and layout, (2) lexical features, (3) syntactic incompleteness, (4) punctuation marks and italics, and (5) the translator's notes and index. The study concludes with a brief discussion of how p'ansori translation/translators should be like.

초록보기

Professional interpreter training is centered around the acquisition and development of interpreting skills, which is reinforced and supported through feedback. Throughout interpreter training, both trainers and peer trainees provide feedback based on their evaluation of interpreting quality. Because feedback can be face-threatening, feedback providers tend to make efforts to address the face wants of those involved through politeness strategies. This paper examines politeness strategies trainees engage in when they evaluate peers' interpreting performances based on an analysis of the discourse of nine consecutive interpreting classes at an MA program. The analysis sheds some light on how face threat is managed in such social and situational contexts to facilitate collaborative learning in the classroom. The findings indicate that positive politeness strategies are associated with positive feedback whereas negative politeness strategies with negative feedback or reserved feedback. Positive politeness strategies identified in the data included positive comments, agreement or sympathy, friendly term of address, and laughter, and these strategies were often used together with negative feedback to mitigate face threat. Negative politeness strategies included a wide range of hedging, such as indirect expressions, subjunctive moods, limitation or reduction, non-final ending and incomplete utterances, and interrogative or rising intonation. Frequent uses of fuzzy and indirect expressions suggest that trainees attempted to address the threat to the face of other trainees and trainers. The results offer insight into the interpersonal aspect of peer feedback in consecutive interpreting classes. Finally this paper acknowledges its limitations and suggests further research that may contribute to the discussion on effective interactional feedback in interpreting pedagogy.

초록보기

The analysis results show that the Korean translations of the People's Network in the early stages of COVID-19 used expressions from the Korean media such as 'Wuhan pneumonia' and 'Infection from China,' There has been a growing number of reports blaming 'them' for the infection.
