This paper investigates the perception and the usage of college students on the language used in social media. For this study, surveys were conducted on 110 English-speaking students and 159 Korean students. As a result of the analysis, both English and Korean students consider conversations on social media are significant. However, they also think that it is not important but indispensable. Regarding when the language used in social media is uncomfortable, both groups responded that they did not understand the meaning of the language. As for the most problematic form of language on social media, both groups responded 'space error' was the most problematic. Views on the language used on social media were divided for and against. However, many English respondents stated that language variations in social media texts are not severe if they do not interfere with communication. Although college students are heavy users of social media, the study found significant negative views about language variants. This can be understood that a large number of college students have a normative view used in the traditional method of language use. (Daejeon University)

Both tree models and logistic regression models are widely used to analyze multifactorial data in recent corpus studies. Using my previous corpus study on relative clauses, this paper argues that tree models have difficulties dealing with the integrated effect of multiple linguistic factors, that is, a three-way interaction of non-syntactic factors that affect the preference of relative clause types. The integrated interaction effect cannot be captured by adding interaction terms in a logistic regression model but by suppressing an intercept and creating a single variable that is the combination of all three factors. A mixed-effects logistic regression analysis is ultimately implemented by adding the random effect of register, which has been ignored in the corpus linguistics literature on relative clauses. This paper examines how Kyungsang speakers utilize acoustic cues to identify the word-initial oral and nasal stops using acoustically-manipulated stimuli in the perception test. The results show that F0 is a major acoustic cue for distinguishing between nasal and tense stops and between lax and aspirated stops and that VOT is a major cue for identifying tense stops but not for lax or aspirated stops. 92% of nasals are correctly identified even without their consonantal nasal portion and 98% of nasals are perceived as tense stops only from raising F0 of the following vowel. The results are consistent with Ahn(2019)'s study on Seoul speakers. (Pai Chai University)

This study explores the correlation between degrees of coercion (i.e., resolution of semantic compatibility between a construction and a lexical item that occurs in the construction) and frequency of usage shown in Korean light verb construction (LVC) [NP(-ul) ha-] ('do NP'). The usage-based model of grammar (Kemmer & Barlow, 2000; Langacker, 1988) assumes that linguistic knowledge is grounded in language use. Based on this assumption, the study observed contemporary spoken data of Sejong Corpus and obtained collostruction strength of the NPs occuring in the LVC. The study showed a correlation of the collostruction strength, acceptability judgments on the coerced LVC expressions used in Yoon (2019)'s study, and semantic compatibility obtained through theoretical observation. Moreover, the current study discusses how the lexical item, construction, and context interact for the coercion. With the empirical evidence, this study contributes to the research that investigates the relation of frequency in use and linguistic knowledge. It also demostrates actual usage of Korean LVC which has been mostly discussed from theoretical standpoints. (Incheon National University)

This study introduces the process of constructing FeSAD (Feature-Sentiment-Annotated Dataset) based on the Semi-automatic Propagation methodology (SSP), which aims for Korean FbSA (Feature-based Sentiment Analysis). FeSAD was constructed by a 2-step annotation process: the SSP methodology is applied first, and then human annotators revise the annotated results. The linguistic resources for SSP consist of the LGG (Local Grammar Graph) patterns and the DECO (Dictionnaire Electronique du COreen) Korean machine-readable dictionaries. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the SSP-based approach with Cosmetics and Food domain texts. The result shows 0.93 and 0.90 F1-score for each domain, which reveals that the SSP-based approach could reduce the amount of the human annotators' task by under 10%. By utilizing COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) and concordancer software, practical and authentic collocation materials can be designed to study the collocation and usage of “noun+wine, noun+beer, noun+coffee, noun+juice, noun+sandwich”. The retrieved collocation material is analyzed and processed as meaningful learning data in classrooms and actual situations. This article describes the present collocation-related teaching materials, especially collocation materials of “wine, beer, coffee, juice, sandwich”. This study will bring practical benefits to teaching English as a foreign language in general and improving students' knowledge of actual English vocabulary for specific purposes in particular. The collocation materials produced by this study will also make a general contribution to teaching English for wider areas and especially for academic purposes. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the future direction and destination of a metaverse in the online education environment. The term metaverse is a combination of 'meta' and 'universe' rapidly emerging as a new medium for remote and distance learning in the COVID-19 era. Technically speaking, it refers to a series of techonological breakthroughs that create the shared virtual spaces, as either 3D environments or immersive virtual reality. Based on a review of the exploration stage of what human interaction and exchange may look like in a metaverse, this paper explores the educational potential of a metaverse platform that provides existential encounters and learning immersion. Based on the metaversial exploration and theoretical findings, this paper proposes a blueprint to increase the quality and sense of the reality of distance and online education in the smooth and thoughtful transition to a digital society. This study focuses on discontinuous partial reduplication in Perak Malay. The base-initial CV and final segment of the base are copied as a reduplicant, leaving behind some base-medial elements not being copied in consonant-final bases. This copying pattern is motivated by the Anchoring constraint. The neutralized vowel in the reduplicant is achieved by the demand of Reduce, while all base vowels are faithfully realized due to Id-IO(F). On the contrary, only the CV of the base is copied in vowel-final bases due to *VH prohibiting the copy of the base-final vowel. In Standard Malay, the reduplicant copies the base-final syllable intact. It is explained by high-ranked faithfulness constraints and OCP-PM, which bans the copy of the base-initial syllable. Reraking relevant constraints account for the different copying patterns in two Malay dialects. (Jeonbuk National University)
