Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate post-traumatic stress, job stress, fatigue, and social support of nurses in direct care for COVID-19 patients and to identify the factors affecting post-traumatic stress among the nurses. Methods: The participants were 150 nurses from three hospitals. Data were collected from September 11, 2020 to September 21, 2020. The data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN/25.0 program. Results: The mean score of post-traumatic stress was 22.27±15.49 (range 0~88). The percentage of high risk group of post-traumatic stress was 35.3%, risk group was 20.0%, normal group was 44.7%. Post-traumatic stress showed statistically significant differences according to quarantined experience (t=2.15, p=.033), and provision of COVID-19 manual (t=-2.40, p=.026). Post-traumatic stress was positively correlated with job stress (r=.48, p<.001), and fatigue (r=.58, p<.001), and it was negatively correlated with social support (r=-.22, p=.005). Job stress was positively correlated with fatigue (r=.74, p<.001), and it was negatively correlated with social support (r=-.17, p=.030). Fatigue and social support (r=-.17, p=.029) had a negative correlation. The results of regression analysis showed that the factors affecting post-traumatic stress included fatigue (β=.56, p<.001), provision of COVID-19 manual (β=-.24, p<.001), and quarantined experience (β =.18, p=.006) and that the total explanatory power was 42.0%. Conclusion: In this study, fatigue, provision of COVID-19 manual, and quarantined experience were found as influential factors of post-traumatic stress among nurses in direct care for COVID-19 patients. Therefore, development of the intervention for reducing the fatigue should consider to prevent post-traumatic stress in nurses. Also, provision of COVID-19 manual for nurses and psychological intervention program for nurses experienced quarantine are necessary.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of educational nurse practitioners at comprehensive nursing care service units by comparing the educational satisfaction of general nurses and the occupational stress of preceptor nurses before and after education by educational nurse practitioners. Methods: Participants were 71 general nurses and 71 preceptor nurses working at comprehensive nursing care service units of G University hospital in I City. The level of educational satisfaction of general nurses and occupational stress of preceptor nurses were measured and compared. The differences in educational satisfaction and occupational stress before and after the education program were verified by paired t-test and one-way ANOVA using SPSS/WIN 27.0 statistical program. Differences before and after the education program according to the general characteristics were analyzed with repeated measure analysis of variance after Sapiro-Wilks normality test, and post-hoc analysis was conducted using Scheffé test. Results: It was inferred that there was a significant difference (t=-9.32, p<.001) in the educational satisfaction of general nurses, with an average of 3.72±0.77 before the education and 4.47±0.60 after the education. However, there was no significant difference in occupational stress in the preceptor nurses. Conclusion: It could be concluded that introduction of educational nurse practitioners at comprehensive nursing care service units has a positive effect on the educational satisfaction of general nurses. This result will serve as basic data to implement educational nurse practitioners for general nurses in all medical institutions as well as comprehensive nursing care service units.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the level of patient advocacy and to determine the influence of nursing professional value and political participation of nurses on patient advocacy theory. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional descriptive study design. Data were collected from 232 nurses from a tertiary hospital, three general hospitals, and a public health center in two districts of a metropolitan using self-reporting questionnaires. Data were analyzed by t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression using SPSS/ WIN 21.0. Results: The mean score of patient advocacy was 4.64±0.55 out of 6, nursing professional value was 3.60±0.49 out of 5, and political participation was 2.21±0.71 out of 5. Nursing professional value (r=.37, p<.001) and political participation (r=.23, p<.001) showed a significant positive relationship with patient advocacy. Factors influencing patient advocacy were identified as nursing professional value (β=.28, p<.001) and political participation (β=.15, p=.014). Conclusion: Based on the findings that nursing professional value and political participation are key factors of patient advocacy, educational strategies and endeavors as level of professional organization are recommended for enhancing patient advocacy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean Nurse Residency Program (KNRP) in order to facilitate new nurses' transition to clinical practice working at tertiary hospitals in Korea. Methods: The KNRP was developed through a literature review, investigation of NRP cases in United States, two rounds of expert consultation, and appropriateness survey. For appropriateness survey of the program, a questionnaire with 118 items and 14 subcategories including overview and operation of KNRP, education programs, staffing criteria for new nurses' education, preceptor supporting strategies, evaluation standards for new nurse's education, infrastructure, and KNRP benefits was used. Data were collected from 369 nurses including nurse educators, nurse managers, preceptors, and new nurses working at 43 tertiary hospitals in Korea from February 16, 2021 to March 22, 2021. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: Appropriateness score of KNRP was 3.42±0.31 (out of 4) and those of 14 subcategories ranged from 3.18±0.47 to 3.58±0.46. The final version of the KNRP postulated is a one-year program, which is composed of off-job training and on-site training including preceptorship over 3 months, and competency reinforcement and adaptation supporting programs. Conclusion: The application of the one-year KNRP will facilitate new graduate nurses' transition to clinical practice. In order for effective application of the KNRP, cooperative efforts of the government, professional associations, and hospitals are needed.

Purpose: To analyze nurses' shift work according to the government guidelines for night work and their perceptions of their work schedules. Methods: The study sample included 487 nurses who provided information on their schedules, including the normal working hours of each shift, and overtime per shift during September 2020. Nurses' perceptions were measured in terms of satisfaction, appropriateness for work-life balance, and fairness to their work schedule. Results: One-third of the respondents worked more than 40 hours per week. The average overtime hour was 1.14 hours per shift. Unsocial hours (8 pm to 6 am on weekdays, midnight to midnight on weekends and public holidays) accounted for 56.4% of all working hours. During their last night shift, on average, nurses worked 9.62 hours and had a break of 39 minutes, although 20.5% reported no break. Sixty-eight percent of nurses had at least one between-shift break shorter than 48 hours after a consecutive night shifts. Fifty-seven percent were satisfied with their schedule. One-third perceived their schedule as appropriate for work-life balance, and two-thirds perceived that days off on weekends and nights were fairly distributed within the unit. Working and overtime hours had an inverse relationship with all three aspects of nurses' perceptions. A higher proportion of unsocial hours and having no breaks during the night shift were associated with lower perceptions of fairness. Conclusion: Reducing working hours, ensuring breaks during night shifts, and increasing rewards for unsocial hours are required to improve nurses' perceptions and reduce turnover due to shift work.

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to identify the bleeding risk factors and to validate the safety of shortening the bed rest time after bone marrow examination in pediatric hemato-oncologic patients. Methods: From July 2019 to September 2020, 145 patients were enrolled from a single center. Medical records were reviewed retrospectively. Descriptive statistics were presented, and the data were analyzed using x2-test, Fisher's exact test, and a logistic regression. Results: After two hours of bed rest, most of the patients (91.7%) did not have bleeding complications, and only 8.3% of the patients had a minor bleeding. The rate of major bleeding complications, including hematoma, retroperitoneal hemorrhage rate was zero. The bleeding complications was frequently found on bilateral procedures than unilateral procedures and the difference were statistically significant (p<.05). Conclusion: Two hours of bed rest time after bone marrow examination could be safe and adequate in pediatric hemato-oncologic patients.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop an evidence-based nursing practice guideline for preventing postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). Methods: The guideline adaptation process was conducted through the 24 steps based on the guideline adaptation manual of Korean Hospital Nurses Association. Results: The newly developed guideline to prevent PPCs consisted of four domains and 30 recommendations. The number of recommendations in each domain was 7 for assessment of PPCs, 17 for nursing interventions to prevent PPCs after general anesthesia, 4 for education (intended for patients and medical staff), and 2 for monitoring and recording. Conclusion: The developed guidelines will contribute in standardization of nursing practice and PPCs prevention and management. We recommend the dissemination and utilization of these guidelines nationwide to improve the quality of postoperative pulmonary complication prevention.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the nursing needs and workload of nurses according to nursing dependency for effective placement of nursing staff in the emergency department (ED). Methods: In June 2020, 256 adult patients who visited the ED were classified as two groups, suspected COVID-19 patients and general patients. The participants'electronic medical records were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, x2-test, and Fisher's exact test using the SPSS. Results: The patient dependence score showed a significant difference between the two groups, with an average of 13.99±1.85 for the suspected COVID-19 patient group and 10.58±2.10 for the general patient group (t=12.42, p<.001). There were statistically significant differences in communication (t=3.28, p=.001), mobility (t=3.29, p=.001), nutrition, elimination, and personal care (t=7.34, p<.001) among the six domains of nursing dependency. In the domains of environment, safety, health, and social needs, the dependency score was 3 for all suspected COVID-19 patients and 1 for all general patients. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that infection control activities of emergency patients who need isolation affect the patients' nursing dependency on nursing care.

Purpose: The study was conducted to investigate the correlation between perception of patient safety risk factors, patient safety competency, and safety nursing activities of nurses in hemodialysis units and identify factors affecting patient safety activities. Methods: The participants were 146 nurses from 16 hemodialysis units located in Gyeongsangnam-do. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS, version 24.0. Results: The mean safety nursing activity score was 3.47±0.38. safety nursing activities of the participants were significantly correlated with patient safety competency. The characteristics showing significant differences in safety nursing activities were educational level, hospital type, hospital work experience, number of hemodialysis treatment per day, number of hemodialysis treatment per nurse, educational experience of patient safety, presence of a patient safety incident report registration system, and direct registration of patient safety incident report. The multiple regression analysis revealed that the factors influencing safety nursing activities were patient safety incident report, patient safety competency, and number of daily hemodialysis treatment (<5~7 times/day) per nurse (R2=.34). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the safety nursing activities of hemodialysis unit nurses should be intensified. In addition, the registration system of patient safety incident report and nurses' competency on patient safety should be improved, and the number of hemodialysis per nurse should be fewer than 7 times per day.

For appropriateness survey of the program, a questionnaire with 118 items and 14 subcategories including overview and operation of KNRP, education programs, staffing criteria for new nurses' education, preceptor supporting strategies, evaluation standards for new nurse's education, infrastructure, and KNRP benefits was used. Data were collected from 369 nurses including nurse educators, nurse managers, preceptors, and new nurses working at 43 tertiary hospitals in Korea from February 16, 2021 to March 22, 2021. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: Appropriateness score of KNRP was 3.42±0.31 (out of 4) and those of 14 subcategories ranged from 3.18±0.47 to 3.58±0.46. The final version of the KNRP postulated is a one-year program, which is composed of off-job training and on-site training including preceptorship over 3 months, and competency reinforcement and adaptation supporting programs. Conclusion: The application of the one-year KNRP will facilitate new graduate nurses' transition to clinical practice. In order for effective application of the KNRP, cooperative efforts of the government, professional associations, and hospitals are needed.

Purpose: To analyze nurses' shift work according to the government guidelines for night work and their perceptions of their work schedules. Methods: The study sample included 487 nurses who provided information on their schedules, including the normal working hours of each shift, and overtime per shift during September 2020. Nurses' perceptions were measured in terms of satisfaction, appropriateness for work-life balance, and fairness to their work schedule. Results: One-third of the respondents worked more than 40 hours per week. The average overtime hour was 1.14 hours per shift. Unsocial hours (8 pm to 6 am on weekdays, midnight to midnight on weekends and public holidays) accounted for 56.4% of all working hours. During their last night shift, on average, nurses worked 9.62 hours and had a break of 39 minutes, although 20.5% reported no break. Sixty-eight percent of nurses had at least one between-shift break shorter than 48 hours after a consecutive night shifts. Fifty-seven percent were satisfied with their schedule. One-third perceived their schedule as appropriate for work-life balance, and two-thirds perceived that days off on weekends and nights were fairly distributed within the unit. Working and overtime hours had an inverse relationship with all three aspects of nurses' perceptions. A higher proportion of unsocial hours and having no breaks during the night shift were associated with lower perceptions of fairness. Conclusion: Reducing working hours, ensuring breaks during night shifts, and increasing rewards for unsocial hours are required to improve nurses' perceptions and reduce turnover due to shift work.

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to identify the bleeding risk factors and to validate the safety of shortening the bed rest time after bone marrow examination in pediatric hemato-oncologic patients. Methods: From July 2019 to September 2020, 145 patients were enrolled from a single center. Medical records were reviewed retrospectively. Descriptive statistics were presented, and the data were analyzed using x2-test, Fisher's exact test, and a logistic regression. Results: After two hours of bed rest, most of the patients (91.7%) did not have bleeding complications, and only 8.3% of the patients had a minor bleeding. The rate of major bleeding complications, including hematoma, retroperitoneal hemorrhage rate was zero. The bleeding complications was frequently found on bilateral procedures than unilateral procedures and the difference were statistically significant (p<.05). Conclusion: Two hours of bed rest time after bone marrow examination could be safe and adequate in pediatric hemato-oncologic patients.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop an evidence-based nursing practice guideline for preventing postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). Methods: The guideline adaptation process was conducted through the 24 steps based on the guideline adaptation manual of Korean Hospital Nurses Association. Results: The newly developed guideline to prevent PPCs consisted of four domains and 30 recommendations. The number of recommendations in each domain was 7 for assessment of PPCs, 17 for nursing interventions to prevent PPCs after general anesthesia, 4 for education (intended for patients and medical staff), and 2 for monitoring and recording. Conclusion: The developed guidelines will contribute in standardization of nursing practice and PPCs prevention and management. We recommend the dissemination and utilization of these guidelines nationwide to improve the quality of postoperative pulmonary complication prevention.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the nursing needs and workload of nurses according to nursing dependency for effective placement of nursing staff in the emergency department (ED). Methods: In June 2020, 256 adult patients who visited the ED were classified as two groups, suspected COVID-19 patients and general patients. The participants'electronic medical records were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, x2-test, and Fisher's exact test using the SPSS. Results: The patient dependence score showed a significant difference between the two groups, with an average of 13.99±1.85 for the suspected COVID-19 patient group and 10.58±2.10 for the general patient group (t=12.42, p<.001). There were statistically significant differences in communication (t=3.28, p=.001), mobility (t=3.29, p=.001), nutrition, elimination, and personal care (t=7.34, p<.001) among the six domains of nursing dependency. In the domains of environment, safety, health, and social needs, the dependency score was 3 for all suspected COVID-19 patients and 1 for all general patients. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that infection control activities of emergency patients who need isolation affect the patients' nursing dependency on nursing care.

Purpose: The study was conducted to investigate the correlation between perception of patient safety risk factors, patient safety competency, and safety nursing activities of nurses in hemodialysis units and identify factors affecting patient safety activities. Methods: The participants were 146 nurses from 16 hemodialysis units located in Gyeongsangnam-do. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS, version 24.0. Results: The mean safety nursing activity score was 3.47±0.38. safety nursing activities of the participants were significantly correlated with patient safety competency. The characteristics showing significant differences in safety nursing activities were educational level, hospital type, hospital work experience, number of hemodialysis treatment per day, number of hemodialysis treatment per nurse, educational experience of patient safety, presence of a patient safety incident report registration system, and direct registration of patient safety incident report. The multiple regression analysis revealed that the factors influencing safety nursing activities were patient safety incident report, patient safety competency, and number of daily hemodialysis treatment (<5~7 times/day) per nurse (R2=.34). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the safety nursing activities of hemodialysis unit nurses should be intensified. In addition, the registration system of patient safety incident report and nurses' competency on patient safety should be improved, and the number of hemodialysis per nurse should be fewer than 7 times per day.
