『뽀뽈 부』는 마야-끼체 족의 꼬스모비시온과 지혜를 담고 있는 책으로, 끼체 족이 천상계, 지상계, 지하계(시발바)와 자연에 관해 지속적으로 관찰하고 성찰한 사항들과 그들의 역사, 신화, 문화, 정치, 경제, 사회의 변천 과정 등이 상징적이고 시적인 언어를 통해 기록되어 있다. 『뽀뽈 부』는 세상의 기원, 문명, 자연에서 일어나는 신비로운 현상들을 특유의 방식으로 설명한다. 『뽀뽈 부』가 다양한 상징을 통해 고대 인간의 신비한 관념의 세계를 보여주기 때문에 메소아메리카의 역사 및 문학 연구자들뿐만 아니라 여러 학문 분야학자들의 탐구 대상이다. 『뽀뽈 부』의 신성들(창조자, 형성자)은 태양과 달, 자연물, 인간을 창조하고 천상계, 자연계, 지하세계에 균형잡히고 조화로운 질서를 정립한다. 이 질서 안에서 세상에 존재하는 만물은 상호의존적이다. 인간과 자연은 동일한 영역을 점유하는데, 인간은 자연적 질서의 중심에 위치한다. 이렇듯 『뽀뽈 부』에는 인간의 우주와 자연에 대한 성찰, 생태주의적 감성이 물씬 배어 있다. 본 연구에서는 『뽀뽈 부』에 소개된 태양과달, 자연물, 인간의 창조 과정과 그들의 존재 의미, 그리고 신과 우주, 인간, 자연물의 관계를 살펴보겠다. 이들 존재의 상징적·은유적 의미를 ‘해석’함으로써 메소아메리카 원주민의 생태주의적 감수성과 꼬스모비시온을 파악할 것이다.

The Popol Vuh is a book that contains the cosmovision and wisdom of the Maya-Quichés, where they are described by means of symbolic and poetic language, both the result of observations on manifestations of the supraworld, of the world(the Earth) and the underworld(Xibalbá), within their history, myth, culture, politics, economy and the process of social change. The Popol Vuh tries to explain in a specific way the origin of the world, civilizations and the various phenomena that occur in Nature. Since the Popol Vuh shows, through symbology, the world of mysterious ideas, it became the object of study both for researchers of history and literature, as well as for those in various scientific fields. The deities (Creators, Shapers) in the Popol Vuh created the sun and the moon, nature and man, establishing the order of balance and harmony. Within this order, all things in the world are interdependent. Man and nature occupy the same domain and man is at the center of nature. Thus, in the Popol Vuh introspection about man, the cosmos, nature and ecological sensibility are penetrated. The objective of this work is to investigate the process of the creation of the sun and the moon, nature and man, their reason for existing, and the relationships between them. In other words, we are going to address the ecological sensibility and cosmovision of Mesoamericans, ‘interpreting’ the symbolic and metaphorical meaning of beings.
