This study conducted a tutoring program in expansion to a TOPIK preparation course. TOPIK II scores, learner satisfaction, learning effect, and perception of the instructor were examined to determine the effects course-linked tutoring has on learners’ Korean language skills. The results are as follows. First, the course-linked tutoring program had a significant effect on the learners’ Korean language achievement in that it raised their overall TOPIK scores. Second, tutoring showed to have an effect on the learners’ Korean language achievement in areas separate from the TOPIK preparation course. Third, the learners perceived that they experienced greater satisfaction and learning effects through the tutoring program than through the TOPIK preparation course. This study is significant in that it proposed and verified the effectiveness of course-linked tutoring as a teaching-learning method that considers individual learner differences. This can have implications for the development and utilization of tutoring programs in the field of Korean language education. (Ewha Womans University)

This study aims to identify the difference between 'atseoseo/eotseoseo' and 'aseo/eoseo' in spoken Korean language from both syntactic and narrative viewpoints, and attempts to organize use of 'atseoseo/eotseoseo' in a consistent manner. Use of 'atseoseo/eotseoseo' is frequently observed in speech of native Korean speakers, and this study examines whether it is simply a mistaken use of the word or involves a speaker's specific intention. To do so, we extracted sentences that contained 'atseoseo/eotseoseo' as spoken by native speakers, and analyzed them from a syntactic as well as narrative perspective. Based on the analysis, we compared the use of 'aseo/eoseo' and 'atseoseo/eotseoseo', and organized their respective usages. This study suggests the need for further research on native speakers' use of language in everyday life as it continues to evolve. It also shows that language education needs to be constantly modified, and is expected to foster language education based on the actual use of language. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the Korean film 'Veteran' and the Chinese remake 'Big Shot' by analyzing differences in language and culture between Korea and China and providing educational sources for cultural awareness.
In order to compare and analyze the film 'Veteran' and 'Big Shot', the study used the qualitative analysis, which helped categorize linguistic and cultural differences in the video text of those movies. The two films are based on the same story, while fundamentally changing the various culturemes, social perspectives, and social issues in order to give the audience more immersion and realism. In this study, the focus of the main analysis is the narrative cultureme and the cultureme of language expression.
In 'Veteran', the Korean cultural frame worked on the whole Korean society or issues related to its social system by actively reflecting social issues, conflicts and phenomena. On the other hand, 'Big Shot' actively reflects Chinese culturemes and social phenomena so that it seems natural for Chinese audiences to adopt those elements while basically using the story of 'Veteran'. In particular, the study demonstrates differences in basic perspectives and social awareness of the two countries such as 'myths regarding national organizations'. By comparing 'Veteran' and 'Big Shot', this study was able to find out differences between Koreans andChinese people in their universal cultural awareness and ways of thinking. Although the scope of application of artificial intelligence(AI) related technologies has been expanding to various fields over the past decade, research on utilization in Korean language education has been minimal. Therefore, in this study, we sought to explore the educational use of listening material produced by the TTS program. First of all, as a result of the listening evaluation on learners, there was no significant difference between the sound source recorded by a professional voice actor and the listening material using the TTS program. Second, Listening materials were evaluated for Korean teachers. 'Pronunciation' could be considered good overall. 'Intonation and Accent' needs to be elaborated according to context of situations, including the speaker's feelings. and that 'time factors' can be accepted naturally in general, but some sentences were awkward. Third, after analyzing the accuracy of the listening material produced through the STT program, 96%, the pronunciation of the listening material was generally clear. Overall, the listening material produced by the TTS system has been evaluated in various ways, and the possibility of educational use in the Korean language education field can be evaluated positively. However, expanding the scope of the TTS program requires continuous performance improvement efforts. (Yonsei University)

This study is a basic study for the objective speech fluency evaluation of Korean language learners, and aims to examine the characteristics of learners' speech by quantitatively analyzing the patterns of disfluency factors in speech data of Japanese Korean learners and native Korean speakers. To this end, the repair, repetition and hesitation filler in spoken corpus data of learners and native speakers were reviewed inductively to classify detailed types and analyze differences of usage patterns by type and functions. According to each function of the disfluency factor, it was divided into factors that could be deducted in the actual evaluation and those that were not, in particular, we argued that the factors actively used by native Korean speakers should not be deducted in the fluency evaluation. In addition, since some of the factors that can be deducted can be used as speaking strategies, it was considered reasonable not to deduct points if the percentage of the native speaker's use was not exceeded. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the debate attitude of international students and to suggest the ways to successfully lead the debate education of them in the general Korean debate program. To this end, it set up Korean proficiency, personality type, and debate experience as independent variables, and the debate attitude (behavioral component, cognitive, affective) as dependent variables. And then, it conducted a survey for the international students attending universities in Seoul and correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis through SPSS Ver.21 for the result. As a result of the independent sample t-test, the international students' Korean proficiency had effect on definitive factor, and the personality type had on definitive and behavioral factors. Also, multiple regression analysis shows that personality type has a negative relation with debate attitude. However, it has no significant relation between Korean proficiency and debate experience. These results show that it is important to understand the personality type of international students in order to lead their active participation in debate classes. In particular, the international students who have introverted personality type are less likely to be active in debates. Therefore, teachers should encourage international learners with introverted personality to participate in debate through constant encouragement and support, and they need to boost their confidence in it by increasing their participation opportunities. Finally, this study has a limitation to fail to suggest examples of Korean debate education methods for international students. (Sungkyunkwan University)

This study demonstrates empirical evidence of the self-assessment battery designed to distinguish between intermediate and advanced learners of Korean with a focus on structural, content, and construct aspect of validity. All 24 statements were selected from the CEFR self-assessment grid and converted into 6-point Likert scale items and administered to 217 university-level Chinese students (Council of Europe, 2001). The item responses were analyzed by the AMOS version 20.0 and the R package version 3.4.3, using a structural equation modeling (SEM) and a generalized partial credit model (GPCM). The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the selected 24 statements constructed four factors (i.e., RC, LC, SP, and WR) and grouped into two meta-criteria (i.e., understanding vs. production skills) which are structurally aligned with the CEFR skill description. The Logit scale of item difficulty indexes showed that the items are sensitive and systematically distributed in relation to the expected difficulty range. The discrimination indexes revealed that only one item showed a low discrimination index below threshold, suggesting that the quality of items is generally acceptable. (Indiana University)

This study aims to suggest how to enhance interaction among learners, content and teacher in synchronous classes. All classes in the education field have to be conducted via asynchronous or synchronous classes due to COVID-19, though previous research has been concerned about effective teaching and learning in online education. However, most previous research showed superficial present conditions without investigating the theoretical background of synchronous classes. Therefore, this study examines the theoretical background of online interaction as well as practical ways to enhance interactions. It is expected that these suggestions can help Korean language teachers as well as foreign language teachers when they design activities for enhancing interactions in synchronous classes. This study aims to examine the effects of adjacent preceding consonants on the pronunciation of back vowels by analyzing the acoustic phonetic characteristics of /ㅡ, ㅜ, ㅓ, ㅗ/ pronounced by Chinese learners of Korean. This paper regards the preceding adjacent consonant as a factor influencing the pronunciation of the back vowels, and compares the pronunciation of Chinese learners of Koreans and native Koreans. Key findings from the analysis are summarized as below.
The F2 value of back vowels increases when preceding consonants are articulated in the alveolar or the palate. The fricative with strong strident has a strong noise energy which contributes to the rise of the back vowel F2 value. The F1 and F2 value of adjacent back vowels increases in case nasal sounds, F2 value increases in case lateral sounds, sonorant with low frequency energy, preceded the back vowels. A stop sound /ㄱ/ with a [grave] feature does not increase the F2 value of the back vowel because the strident interval disappears due to voicing of a stop sound in word-initial and non-word initial positions. This study aims to analyze and verify the bilingual corpus used in the Korean-Chinese contrastive analysis. To this end, Chapter 2 describes the problems of the corpus construction and corpus used in contrastive linguistics. Chapter 3 analyzes the characteristics of the two kinds of the bilingual corpus - parallel corpus and comparative corpus used in Korean-Chinese contrastive analysis. In Chapter 4, in order to examine the validity of the parallel corpus used in the Korean-Chinese uni-direction contrastive study: the corpora used in five different studies on the Korean particle 'e(에)' and 'eseo(에서)' and their correspondences in Chinese were compared, and the results of the study were compared. As a result, the corpora used in these five papers were different, and the research results for the study subjects were different, which proved the effect of parallel corpus structure in contrastive studies.
Furthermore, we conducted a replica study focusing on the comparative study of Korean-Chinese suffixes. Focusing on the large difference in corpus size between the Korean and Chinese sub-corpora of the comparative corpus, we resized the Korean sub-corpus and conducted a replica study on the suffix. As a result of increasing the Korean corpus size, it was confirmed that the study results on the Korean suffix significantly depend on the corpus size. In summary, it is vital to apply strict standards for representativeness, balance, and size in constructing parallel and comparative corpus in contrastive linguistics studies. (Paichai University)
