President-elect Joe Biden will likely build upon Obama’s ‘leading-from-behind’ Doctrine. This paper attempts to understand whether the Biden administration will succeed, given that both the Democrats and Republicans criticized Obama’s Doctrine for eroding American exceptionalism. Prior to addressing the relationship between American exceptionalism and grand strategy, this paper identifies the defining characters of American exceptionalism and introduces the concept of ‘varieties of American exceptionalism.’ Second, this paper situates Obama’s Doctrine in the debate over U.S. grand strategy and asserts that Obama’s Doctrine promotes an evolving modus vivendi of American exceptionalism. By comparing Obama’s Doctrine with Biden’s election pledges, this paper concludes that Biden’s team can learn from Obama on how to navigate new American exceptionalim in the post-American world.

This paper aims to examine the public opinion towards the development of technology by focusing on Edgar Allan Poe's essay, “Maelzel's Chess Player.” The so-called automaton, chess player, catches the attention of the general public and produces countless speculations on its mechanical operation. While watching the chess game between the randomly chosen opponent and the automaton, the spectators have brief moments of belief in the automaton, and its ability to emulate human logic and complex thinking. Thus, I will explore how the spectators appreciate scientific achievements and the social reality to which they belong are represented through the performance. Poe encourages the spectators and readers to dismantle science and trickery with the help of deductive reasoning. In “Von Kempelen and His Discovery,” Poe addresses the unrealistic and almost unimaginable scientific discovery, alchemy, through the lens of the seemingly reliable narrator. I will trace how Poe alerts the readers to think over and filter out the scientific information they have consumed without any discretion through this hoax literature.

The purpose of this article is to explicate the reasons the white evangelical protestants voted for Donald Trump by relying on the model of status politics. Along with this purpose, this article also attempts to contextualize the white evangelical protestants' support for Trump within the history of their political mobilization since the late 1970s. With these objectives in mind, this article first describes the white evangelical protestants' political participation both in the 1994 mid-term congressional election and in the 2004 presidential election, before providing an empirical explanation on their ardent support for Trump. As widely known, the status politics highlights the anxiety and discontent among some social subgroups faced with rapid social change threatening their traditional position. Seen from this perspective, the white evangelicals' support for Trump in the 2016 presidential election and afterward can be best explained by their fear of the cultural shift threatening their Christian beliefs, and at the same time by Trump's tactical persuasion that he will be their protector against non-Christian intruders.

This paper examines the early modern Korea when the United States began to reveal its representation through material culture, and reconsiders the period of the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century of Korea in terms of Americanization. The sales and distribution of American products, which were limited to American missionary communities in Korea in the 1890s, expanded to the general Korean public market after the 1900s. Such changes are visible in the advertisements of modern Korean newspapers and magazines of the time. Paying attentions to the American material culture, it examines the aspects of Americanization in the early modern Korea, which has been relatively obscured by the terms of Westernization and modernization, and overlooked in the fields of both American Empire studies and the modern Korean studies.

This paper traces the recent change in the imagination and representation of community and argues that the impetus for this change is anchored at the thought of excess that emerges in the wake of the discursive ascendence of the post-foundationalism. If the traditional approach to community is based upon the coupling of the sanctified concept of individuality and the power of sovereignty, then liberalism's (and neo-liberalism's) logic of identity can be criticized because of the structural possibility of sovereignty for the state of exception and violence. Many post-foundationalists conceptualize a new concept of community as constituted through difference per se rather than identity; if the modern state community's attempt to immune itself from any external violence and to maintain its own identity irrevocably leads to the exclusion of the others, the new concept of community is built upon the bankruptcy of the modern paradigm of immunity. While this paper basically agrees with the post-foundationalist position, it also argues that, rather than jettisoning the concept of immunity, we need to invigorate the concept by giving back to it the dialectical dynamics―that is, the constant rethought and “re-treat” of violence in the constitution of community.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, many East Asians traveled to the United States for various reasons. To Euro-Americans they were regarded as unfamiliar and strange. Due to economic reasons pertaining to the growing number of East Asian immigrants, the American print media invented degrading stereotypes that eventually became standard characters in the frontier melodramas of the 1870s American Theatre. This study examines three stereotypes of East Asian people and their application in four frontier melodramas that were written by prominent authors of the time: Two Men of Sandy Bar (1876) by Bret Harte, Ah Sin (1877) by Bret Harte and Mark Twain, The Danites in the Sierras (1877) by Joaquin Miller, and My Partner by Bartley Campbell (1879). By highlighting examples of how these playwrights reinforced attitudes of prejudice toward Asians in that time period, this study provides a contribution to the understanding of the long history of racism in the United States and the power of the performing arts to strengthen or weaken an ideology.

Elizabeth Bishop's compelling themes of home, travel, and geography are intricately related to her migration from North to South and back again. Starting with Bishop's own words about her Canadian identity, this study mostly examines how Great Village, Nova Scotia forged her life and art, and in what manner her actual lived experiences in and memories of Nova Scotia are embodied in her poems. The interior landscape of “Sestina” and “First Death in Nova Scotia,” is represented through the rhetoric of memory. The exterior landscape of “At the Fishhouses” and “Cape Breton” in Nova Scotia provides detailed local geography connected with the poet's biography. Another Nova Scotian poem, entitled simply “Poem,” dealing with what art is, including poetry, evokes the poet's memory as recalled by a painting about the place. Finally, by reading her topographical poem, “The Moose,” this paper explains the multi-level significance of Bishop's journey from Nova Scotia to Boston. In Bishop's Nova Scotian poems, the boundary between geography and biography, and between exterior and interior is blurred, and the landscapes “as real sites and as representations” are saturated with her geographical, biographical, and aesthetic values.

Dionne Brand provides the reader with vivid representations of the dilemmas and agonies from which people excluded in the history of belonging have been suffering. One of her latest novels Love Enough (2014) deals with the protagonists' unceasing trial and error in the process of surviving in Toronto. In this paper, I analyze how Da'uud, Bedri, and Ghost's process of drifting in Toronto causes a rupture with the monolithic sense of belonging in order to argue that they succeed in developing their own sense of belonging and connection and then reach in-between space, based on a link between Brand's ideation of drifting and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's conceptualization of deterritorialization. It would be meaningful to elucidate how Da'uud, Bedri, and Ghost's everyday lives develop the possibility of loving themselves and each other enough, ultimately shedding light on the very beginning of the rupture with the history of belonging.

Silence has been viewed by critics of Asian American literature as either a means of resistance or accommodation, but I argue that silence is a flexible strategy to heighten the presence of racism. Specifically, in Gish Jen's Typical American, the narrator's silence about the character's thoughts and emotions toward racism raises the readers' awareness about racism. Silence about racism in the text functions as a cautionary device, highlighting its potential as both resistant and accommodative, and therefore, strategic. As such, the silence in Typical American operates with flexibility. By examining and extending the arguments of King-Kok Cheung and Patti Duncan's conceptualization of silence, this study navigates the manner in which silence can be unearthed from its traditional perception of being a sign of accommodation, a stereotypical portrayal of Asian Americans. Simultaneously resistant and accommodative, the silence in the text is both a reflection of the reality and a means to convey the unfathomable impacts of racism. Without being explicitly narrated, the silence of the narrator operates on different levels.
