This study attempted to examine the effect of the components of online Korean language education on learning transfer and the moderating effect of TOPIK grade. The main results of this study conducted on a total of 229 Korean language learners are as follows. First, among the components of online Korean language education, the learning environment factor had the strongest influence on learning transfer. Second, no moderating effect was found on the TOPIK grade. Through the above results, this study emphasized that the online educational environment centered on learners and platforms should be designed. (Dongguk University)

In Korean, 19 consonants in syllable-final position are unreleased and neutralized into 7 consonants, which is considered a significant feature of the language. Due to those characteristics, learners of Korean face difficulties in pronouncing syllable-final consonants. Moreover, the difficulties are unique to each learner and manifest themselves differently in each case. Kim (2020) recognized the need for teaching pronunciation of syllable-final consonants by language type and classified the pronunciation into six categories. Using Kim (2020) as the basis, this paper proposes teaching syllable-final Korean consonants pronunciation according to language typology and pronunciation diagnosis. The five detailed methodologies proposed here are: (1) to teach by division into open-syllable and closed-syllable languages, (2) to teach in the order of nasals, liquids, and obstruents, (3) to teach obstruents pronunciation before consonants first, and then move to word-final obstruents, (4) to teach explaining the real meaning of “unreleasing process”, and (5) to teach obstruents pronunciation with consonantal sequences sharing the same place of articulation. In sum, how to teach syllable-final consonants pronunciation is displayed practically by dividing them into nasals, liquids, and obstruents. (Keimyung University)

The purpose of this study is to generate ideas for the design of the curriculum through the actual status of foreign students majoring in Korean language education. In order to achieve this goal, a survey was conducted on 161 undergraduate students majoring in Korean language education, taking Gwangju and Jeonnam as an example, where most of the students are international students. The contents of the survey include learner's personal information, Korean language learning experience, major selection and motivation, desired career path, status of taking courses in the Korean language education major, and learner requirements. In particular, as for the status of lectures in the Korean language education major, subjects were classified into subjects related to Korean education and communication subjects, it was confirmed to the Likert level such as voluntary motivation, content comprehension, communication comprehension, academic achievement, communication achievement, and course satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to prepare a teaching-learning method based on MTPE so that foreign learners can know the meaning and use of the indefinite pronoun `any' and use it accurately. It aims to expand grammar/vocabulary by learning the difference from the `who' series and the detailed meaning and usage restrictions of `any' through machine translation and accurately grasping it with additional explanations from the teacher. This paper is valuable in revealing that machine translation can be a valuable tool for classroom communication as it helps learners not only in improving their linguistic abilities but also in affective aspects. This study investigated the discourse properties of the folktales orally stated by immigrants based on `An Outline of Multicultural Oral Literature (a collection of 21 books)' and suggested their meaning in a multicultural society in which the properties of oral discourse can be searched. In particular, this paper differs from other studies in that it sought the meaning of such folktales in a multicultural society based on orality, not the significance of conventional narrativity-centered cultural discourse. A survey on these folktales against immigrants over the past 3 years has found important characteristics in oral discourse. Folktales stated by immigrants displayed their identity. In fact, when such folktales orally described by married immigrant women were compared to the narratives stated by international students, married immigrant women stated the stories of `maternity' and `married couple' while international students mentioned the stories of `hero' and `love'. In fact, the same folktales were mostly stated regardless of an immigration status. However, married immigrant women and international students showed a difference in their preferred folktale, and such difference was found regardless of nationality. Even though the same folktales were stated, an immigrant's identity developed into a speaker's orientation, setting a new direction for such oral statements. These oral discourse properties of immigrants' folktales had both educational and psychological meanings in a multicultural society. Hence, the oral statement of folktales by people from different countries in a multicultural society is meaning as a healing process, experiencing education for a coexisting and united multicultural society, recovery of immigrants' identity and support from the Korean society. This study is to show that the pattern of terms of address between native Korean speakers and non-native Korean speakers is investigated and compared. To this end, a questionnaire tool was developed based on the analysis of Korean textbooks, and a frequency analysis was conducted by collecting questionnaires from a total of 224 people. The results are summarized as follows. First, there was a difference in the pattern of terms of address according to age in public scenes with intimacy. When the counterpart is older, the native Korean speaker used kinship term of address and 'name + nim', while non-native Korean speakers used 'name + ssi'. Non-native Korean speakers perceived 'name + ssi' as a familiar and formal term of address. Second, there was a difference in the terms of address used by the two groups for their bosses in the intimate private scene. Korean native speakers used 'title + nim', and non-native Korean speakers used 'last name + title(+ nim)'. As mentioned above, It was found that when there is intimacy, it is difficult to judge the subjective distance from the other party because the participant variable acts in a complex way with other factors such as age or position. This study investigated the anaphoric usage of advanced Korean learners through quantitative criteria based on discourse and pragmatic information. 10 L1 Korean speakers and 20 advanced L2 Korean learners (10 L1 English speakers, 10 L1 Chinese speakers) participated in a story retelling task. After transcribing the responses, anaphoric usage was analyzed according to discourse features, antecedent characteristics, and referent characteristics. Statistical differences were shown between groups in information status (topic shift), antecedent form (null pronoun and “i/gue + noun”), number of potential antecedents (one and two), syntactic roles of antecedent (non-subject), number of a referent (singular), and animacy of a referent (human and inanimate). Regarding the anaphoric usage rate, L1 Chinese speakers showed closer similarities to L1 Korean speakers than to L1 English speakers. Additionally, in terms of markedness, the hierarchies of “i/gue + noun” and “noun” did not exhibit consistent tendencies in the quantitative scale used in this study. However, the two forms were similar regarding the use of null pronouns and negative correlations. (Chonnam University)

Acquisition of proper discourse knowledge is as important as acquisition of grammatical knowledge in a foreign language. In some specific situations, it is difficult for Chinese learners of Korean language to use specific expressions in a proper way. According to previous studies, it is likely that even Korean native speakers have difficulty in using the appropriate expressions of sugo and gosaeng in some discourse situations. Learners who lack discourse knowledge in a target language will depend on their mother tongue when they are using the target language. Due to the interlingual transfer, errors will occur. After examining the discourse characteristics and types of expressions related to sugo and gosaeng, a survey with a total of 60 Chinese learners and 60 Korean native speakers was conducted. The study analysed sugo and gosaeng related expressions used by Korean native speakers and Korean language learners based on situation, context, generation and gender. A comparative analysis of Korean native speakers and Korean language learners was also conducted. The study then discussed pedagogical implications, suggesting that Chinese learners will be provided with cultural instructions and be exposed to sophisticated advanced discourse knowledge through a variety of classroom instructions and guided communicative tasks. Cloze test, one of the most commonly used language test type in English education, is easy to find in many standardized English language test. The purpose of this study is to find the possibility of developing cloze test for evaluating Korean language ability of foreign learners. In this study, cloze test papers for Korean language evaluation are made and tests are conducted on Korean learners. The most widely used cloze test type `Regular cloze test' and `Irregular cloze test' are included in the test paper, and the papers of the learners are collected for scoring. The test results are analyzed and compared with their TOPIK(Test of Proficiency in Korean) results to find if the Korean cloze test can distinguish learners' with different Korean proficiency. And also, the answer written by Korean learners group and native Korean speakers group are compared to find the difficulties in learning Korean. The analysis found that the language performance of Korean learners vary by the amount of language restriction in the test, and it is also found that Korean cloze test has its feasibility. The purpose of this study is to analyze the research trend in existing Korean culture education in order to suggest a development direction for research on Korean culture education in the future. First, for this study, a total of 979 research papers: 366 academic journals and 613 academic papers were searched for, collected, and selected with the keywords “Korean Culture Education” at the Korea Educational Research Information Service (RISS). In addition, it preceded the work of preparing new thematic standards for thematic analysis of Korean culture education, and keyword frequency analysis and word cloud were presented through keyword network analysis of NetMiner 4.5, a language network analysis tool. Looking at the analysis results, first, research on Korean culture education showed a steady quantitative increase. Second, there was twice as many researches in the form of academic papers as academic journals, and more than 10 times more master's thesis than doctoral theses. Third, as a form of research by subject, the field of 'teaching method' was the most common in both academic journals and academic papers. However, for other research subject areas, there was a clear difference in the preferred research fields of academic journals and academic papers. Therefore, this paper proposes to promote research on professional academic thesis and expand research in the subject areas of 'cultural education content' and'educational curriculum development' for the independent and systematic expansion of the field of Korean culture education.
