초록보기

This paper explores the voice of J. M. Coetzee, the real narrator of his novel Disgrace, as he modifies and turns over the narrative described by the unreliable third-person narrator David Lurie. Coetzee deftly overlaps with the racist protagonist, focusing on Melanie and Isaacs. The first section of this paper examines the meanings of Coetzee's deliberately adopted ambiguous point-of-view narrative strategy, noting that the story unfolds in a third-person narrator's point of view but is tilted toward David. The second section analyzes how David's rape of Melanie is distorted in its depiction by the unreliable narrator. The last section traces the twisted portrayal of Isaacs and at the same time explores the other narrative voice created of narrative by Coetzee. The multi-layered narrative of Disgrace shows the reality of white South Africans' refusal to accept the changes after Apartheid and the distorted view of Black people created by the country's troubled history. Coetzee sharply criticizes the reality of South Africa through narrative strategies that realistically express David's racist views and correct them.

Southern lady codes forbade women to satisfy their desires. Also, Southern lady codes were combined with religion, the patriarchal system, the capitalistic system, racism, etc. Nevertheless, Lena Grove in William Faulkner's Light in August has a positive estimation, which is mostly based on a mythological approach. However, this article will focus on how realistic she is. Lena's journey is for liberty from endless process of these lady codes. Above all, Lena's line of flight can be seen as positive through a mythological approach as well as the positive process of seeking her desire. Also her travel is significant because it helps to build solidarity with minority. Against the opinion of considering Lena to be a fool, this article reveals that she de-territorilizes the Oedipal region so as to seek her desire for an anti-Oedipus. Lena's parents were dead when she was young. She was supported by her brother, who was a married man struggling to survive in poverty. Furthermore, she suffered from hard house-work and Oedipal structure. Lena tries to seek her desire through becoming a sexually liberated woman. she shows the possibility of incest with her brother McKinley Grove by moving through the flow of her libido.

This paper analyzes the rabbit-proof fence as a symbol of Australian colonial history in Doris Pilkington's Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence. The rabbit-proof fence began with the English colonization of Australia. Through sport hunting, the colonizers wanted to improve their social status as new landed gentries, and the colonial government operated colonial discourse by practicing the “Englishness.”
Just as the white settlers built the fences to control rabbits, they governed Australian Aboriginal people through an assimilation policy. The Australian government, in the name of civilizing Aboriginal people, tried to separate the Stolen Generations and assimilate them into white society. In the process, however, the traditional culture of the indigenous people was disconnected, and the indigenous community was disbanded.

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze Jeanette Winterson's Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, from the perspective of Judith Butler's queer theory, particularly using Butler's views on performativity and melancholia. According to Butler, the radical disjunction between heterosexuality and homosexuality is simply not true: there are structures of psychic homosexuality within heterosexual relations. Therefore, the abjected outside is, after all, no more than the inside of the melancholic subject as its own founding repudiation. For Butler, gender as an identity is a tenuous social construction built through a repetition of stylized acts. Consequently, the postulation of an objective gender identity turns out to be a fiction which regulates behaviors and social roles. Jeanette, the heroine, embarks on a journey of discovering her sexuality, which is in conflict with compulsory heterosexuality. The pain that Jeanette had to endure as a homosexual, as well as her methods of recovery from that pain, takes on an expansive meaning when Butler's discussion of gender identity is applied to the work. This paper focuses on the possibility of discovering new gender identities through Jeanette, the subject of paradoxical obedience that repeatedly performs gender norms but constantly deviates from consistency in the repetition.

초록보기

“A New England Nun” is considered Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's most representative work. Though she wrote numerous short stories, this one particularly serves as a marker of how scholarly views of Freeman's literary disposition have been formulated. Freeman first earned her reputation as one of the bestselling female local-color writers who dominated the American literary market in the latter half of the 19th century. But she was soon forgotten during the burgeoning American literary scholarship in the early twentieth century that eventually constructed a white-male-centered canon of national literature. Freeman was rescued out of obscurity and included in the tradition of women's literature by feminist critics in the 1980s and '90s. Since then, Freeman has been a household name of proto-feminist scholarship by virtue of her portrayal of unmarried or widowed women's quiet yet radical pursuit of independence and freedom despite the patriarchal surroundings of hyper-conservative New England rural areas.
Feminist critics contend that they have rediscovered her significance by means of so-called 'literary regionalism,' which proposes that 19th-century American women writers created an alternative 'region' of women's own apart from androcentric society. That criticism is supposed to be a backlash against earlier dismissal of Freeman's work as too localized, too domestic, and thus too feminine. However, it commits one and the same misunderstanding as local-color criticism of Freeman's authorial intention, which in fact attempts to combine the local and the feminine and suggest her own regionalism. This essay aims to prove that intention by reading “A New England Nun” anew as a story of the 'New England witch,' which was an extremely popular literary icon throughout the 19th century that functioned to contain the undesirable―that is, un-Protestant and un-patriarchal― aspects of America and label them as the nation's long-gone past. Such reading will help us comprehend Freeman's keen perception of the much more complex and dynamic realities of New England at the time that were full of energies to lead the modernization of the relationship between individuality and community as well as locality and nationality.

This paper examines how the racial trauma experienced by Frank and Ycidra (pronounced Isidra) and discusses the process of their regaining agency as free Black Americans. The racial trauma that Black Americans experienced created psychological oppressions within them revealing undesirable influences and traits in their personalities. Centuries after obtaining freedom from their physical and psychological enslavement, many Black Americans are still stigmatized so much as to possess distorted personalities with the lingering 'memories of trauma.' Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison introduces us to the tumultuous life of siblings, Frank and Ycidra “Cee” Money in her 2012 novel, Home. The sibling's journey back to their hometown in Lotus, Georgia is not without challenging obstacles, which compelled them to reconnect and confront the trauma of their past in a quest of obtaining their agency as free blacks during the American Golden Age. The repulsive memories of racial violence they witnessed during their childhood and the tenacious racism they have to undergo in the US during the 1950s added up in the fragmentation of their agency. For Frank, rescuing Ycidra from the foreboding threat of death from the hands of a white male eugenicists is a form of redemption and healing from the emasculation he experienced. For Ycidra, becoming independent from Frank and gaining connection to the community of women is a method of healing to gain her own sense of agency.

This paper traces the strategy of the work of mourning in Eurydice (2004), which restore the status of the Other by mourning. The work of mourning conducted by Eurydice and her father employs the ethical responsibilities for the silenced and repressed practice of mourning itself, which has been the subject of institutional control since ancient times. Represented by female mourning, the practice of mourning responds to the demand of those who strive to remember their loss and celebrate the memory of their loved ones. The crossing line of the mourning that carries out the celebratory ritual for the Other and its alterity constructs a unique work of mourning in Eurydice. By integrating the mourning of historical Others and mourning on the individual level, Ruhl navigates the intricacy of the alterity of mourning.

The purpose of this study is to explore the use of likely NP construction. This modern structure, which has been more increasingly found in American English since 2015, shows a new behaviour of likely, unlike the common and aged use of likely as an adjective or an adverb. Two types of analyses have been conducted to examine the behavior of likely NP: collexeme analyses employing Stefanowitch and Gries (2003) and Gries and Stefanowitsch (2004), and configural frequency analyses utilizing Gries(2004). It has been found that the construction has two seemingly different characteristics, which become clearer when comparing it with the use of the synonymous construction likely to be NP: likely NP structure is characteristically used when describing the possibility of logical reasoning, which can be reasonably inferred from strong logical collexemes; However, it is actually preferred in personal registers such as blogs and is frequently accompanied by degree adverbs, which implies the reasoning is not rigorous, but mostly loose.

This study examines how learners' attitudes vary regarding English language learning in general and online English language learning in particular, and notes how students with different levels of English adapt to the different learning contexts. Ninety-five participants were classified into low-, medium-, and high-proficiency groups based on their English performance. A background questionnaire, along with the Attitudes towards English Language Learning (AELL) scale, and the Attitudes towards Online English Language Learning (AOELL) scale were employed in the study. The findings of the study indicate that the performance of the high- and medium-proficiency groups was significantly greater than that of the low-proficiency group in terms of cognition and learning-effort on the AELL and surplus value of online English language learning on the AOELL. Based on those results, this study suggests pedagogical implications and in-class activities teachers can use to better foster positive learning attitudes in their EFL classes.

초록보기

William Blake states that the purpose of his work is an endeavour to restore “the Golden Age” of human beings. His vocation for the restoration is revealed explicitly in Songs of Innocence and of Experience, an early production in his writing career. In the epigram, he says that the songs are written for “shewing the two contrary states of the human soul.” From the title itself we can draw easily what the two contrary states of the human soul are. And in Songs of Innocence, it's easy to tell what 'innocence' means. The prevailing motifs and imagery in the poems show that it's an innocent status of the human mind which can be found in young boys and girls inexperienced in the tough world.
But in Songs of Experience, 'experience' resists obstinately being translated into 'corruption' as opposed to 'innocence.' Songs of Experience witnesses many young boys and girls deserted and tormented by grown-ups especially by the established. The fact that the former-dwellers in the world of innocence are harshly abused in the world means that the experience is not the state of the human soul or mind but 'the conditions in living.' And also the translation of experience into corruption impairs the coherence of the whole context in Songs of Experience.
Experience as the conditions in living invites inevitably the problem of 'justice.' In Songs of Experience, Blake criticizes severely the 'logocentrism' which has been corrupted into the dominant ideology by the ruling class, especially by the religious. The religious who have monopolized all the information in the name of religious mysticism curb the reasons of people and their bodies as well.
Blake believes in the original status of human beings but also believes that the deep-rooted injustice done by the established has been spoiling the prime quality. Only the society of justice in which reciprocal equality is fulfilled can restore “the Golden Age” of human beings. The predicaments of the modern world in which the social polarization between the rich and the poor has been deepened clarify that Songs of Experience can be a prophetic and apocalyptic gospel for us.

This study discusses Toni Morrison's cross-cultural perspectives of African Americans' community spirit and Hippies' individualistic spirit in God Help the Child. Morrison shows her perspectives of African Americans' community spirit and Hippies' individualistic spirit in light of their primitivism which sets a higher value on spontaneity, simplicity, and anti-materialism.
In the novel, Morrison describes a hippie couple who is directed against the 20th century conservative middle-class values, such as materialism, commercialism and consumerism of the post-industrial society. The couple live individualistic lives in the remote country from urban and civil advantages. Nevertheless, they willingly help their racial outcast Bride out of her car which crashed into one of the street trees, take her to the hospital, take care of her for six weeks, and criticize her materialistic values. They practice their community spirit for people in need without hesitation. Therefore, the portrayal of the hippies can be traced back to that of Morrison's African American female character Pilate Dead in Song of Solomon. Pilate lives in a grove of four huge pine trees at the back of her house which is far away form the post-industrial world. Her association with the grove marks her primitive-naturalistic life styles and values. As the hippie couple do, she lives without any civilized necessities and facilities. She not only bridges between ancestors and descendants but also helps her nephew Milkman Dead out of his father's inhumane materialism and middle-class hierarchial values to show him into the primitive history and myth of African-American ancestors.
Finally, Morrison shows that the cultural boundaries between African Americans' community spirit and Hippies' anti-civilized spirit can be dissolved into the primitive, naturalistic, and communal spirit.

Sarah Ruhl's Dead Man's Cell Phone is a play about cell phones, meditation, death, love, and disconnection in the digital age. It is common to communicate the latest information through mobile phones in this modern era. In this work, the cell phone is a medium for communicating with the world of death as the most advanced communication device ever invented. It is also a reminder of connection that is absent in this world, and it is a medium that fuses reality and surrealism.
Dead Man's Cell Phone is a comedy, that is anti-Aristotelian in composition and Dionysian in spirit. In this work, reconciliation and healing between the worlds of life and death are driven by the confabulation of the main character Jean. The origin of confabulation, the act of creating a story in the mind, include 'fables'. Therefore, confabulation has a certain universal truth regardless of whether or not the specifics are true. This play is a story about a dead man, Gordon, and Jean, who witnessed Gordon's last moment in the world. Jean's confabulation shows that both the living and the dead can heal each other's wounds and close the gap between the two, so that a person's life can be reconciled even after death.

The present study aimed to investigate learners' different levels of second language (L2) writing anxiety across proficiency levels. Thirty-five Korean students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) participated in this study. Their proficiency levels were categorized using a cluster analysis in which the learners were categorized into two clusters: a high group and a low group. The learners' L2 writing anxiety was assessed using Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (Cheng, 2004), consisting of three components of L2 writing anxiety, i.e., somatic anxiety, avoidance behavior, and cognitive anxiety. The analysis for the two groups showed differential writing anxiety across the three anxiety components. The results were then discussed, and relevant pedagogical implications provided.

This study examines not only Korean students' perceptions of employing communicative language teaching (CLT) in large multi-level EFL classes but also the main factors affecting their perceptions. One hundred and nineteen college students, ranging in English proficiency from beginner to low-intermediate, from two intact classes implementing CLT for one academic year participated in this study. Data from surveys, follow-up interviews, and field notes were collected and analyzed by using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results indicate that students identify the CLT classes positively with respect to having an interest and self-motivation in different communicative activities, focusing on tasks, and improving their meaningful use of English. The findings support the results of the original study conducted in large homogeneous classes although the four factors were found to be more beneficial to relatively higher level, rather than lower level students. Thus, it seems that for beginners, collaborative learning, including pair or group work, is less effective in large mixed-level classes.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the co-relationship between L2 adult learners and music. In this study, three songs were used: Coward of the County, Lucille, and The Gambler sung by Kenny Rogers. The participants were five graduate students majoring English education in a Korean university, and their English language proficiency was high intermediate with advance reading and grammar knowledge. Participants were asked to memorize the lyrics of the three songs and to respond to a question about the difficulty of the memorization. All the participants responded negatively; that is, they found the songs problematic to memorize. They were then asked to highlight both familiar and unfamiliar expressions. The collected data was analyzed in terms of lexical collocation (LC) and grammatical collocation (GC). The results showed that the participants were unfamiliar with about half of the LC and most likely lead to causing issues memorizing the lyrics. However, the participants had fewer problems with GC due to their prior knowledge of GC. It was learned that the participants had never been trained to develop awareness of collocation. If the participants had learned vocabulary in a specified context, they would have learnt the relevant collocations. Western music can provide this context because it is story based and consequently learners would maintain interest in the music and learn the collocations more readily.

By showcasing and analyzing three separate texts from the English Civil War (The King's Cabinet Opened; Eikon Basilike; A Fiery Flying Roll), this paper explores how the radical shift of print culture after the collapse of state censorship reflected on and strengthened the crisis of the symbolic order in the domains of politics. The King's Cabinet Opened exemplifies the Parliament's new approach to the use of print. By sending King Charles' private documents and letters to print, the Parliament attempted to turn public sentiments against King Charles, thereby finding a more effective way of undermining his authority and power. Eikon Basilike is a sort of counter attack on the part of King Charles to justify his kingship by using the same print media with a view of an emerging readership constituted of common people. King Charles used Eikon Basilike as a prop to shine his final performance at the stage of Whitehall to complete his self-fashioning as a martyr. A Fiery Flying Roll, the third piece under examination, tells us that the exploitation of print to weaken the symbolic power of established authority was not limited to disagreements between elite groups. Against Coppe's apocalyptic vision announced clearly in the pamphlet speaks the fact that print was now embraced even among socially and politically marginalized groups to challenge the basic premises of hierarchical society that had hitherto suppressed their utopian dreams. In conclusion, these writings are the landmarks attesting to a dramatic increase in the use of print as a deconstructive force to subvert the established order and power, anticipating the arrival of post-modern cultural practices of the late 20th century.

In order to explores the nature of Swift's satiric imagination, this article analyzes Swift's attitude towards satire and how he uses satiric imagination. For Swift, satire and the imagination are the two fundamental constituents towards which he showed a deeply ambiguous or ambivalent attitude.

Kim (2014) has previously addressed the semantic difference between the loose AC and the close AC by claiming that the former evokes a conventional implicature while the latter simply induces an at-issue meaning. However, in terms of the IQ test suggested by Bach (1999), the propositional meaning generated by the loose AC cannot be considered as a conventional implicature. Pointing out this problem, this paper addresses the difference between the two constructions in a new way, relying on the Generative Lexicon Theory advanced by Pustejovsky (1996). The loose AC projects two independent phrases as the anchor and the appositive. However, in the case of the close AC, the anchor and the appositive intrinsically depend on each other since one element is the overt realization of the argument of the Formal quale in the Qualia structure of the other element. This semantic characteristic of the close AC also results in its compounding-like syntactic nature. This proposal can explain four additional grammatical contrasts observed between the two constructions.
