Honor and shame have been widely considered as core social values of the Ancient Near Eastern world, which is the habitat for the biblical accounts. Being rich with the usage of the Hebrew words for shame and honor in the context of worship, the Psalter is explored in this paper to study the meaning of biblical worship in the light of the shame-and-honor conceptual framework.

초록보기

On the quest for the historical Jesus, some biblical scholars and archaeologists alike have argued that the economic status of early first century CE Galilee portrays a poverty-stricken region and hence does not reflect the economic portrayals in the Gospels. In light of the debate, this study investigated the economic status of early first century CE Galilee that have been presented by archaeologists and biblical scholars. After which, the results were used to dialog with selected economic portrayals of the Synoptic Gospels, in order to find if there is confusion between “Text and Artifact.” Consequently, the study showed that there is no confusion between “Text and Artifact” on the matter of the economic portrayals of early first century CE Galilee and the Synoptic Gospels. Therefore, both sources demonstrated that the people of Jesus's Galilee experienced wealth as well as poverty, thus authenticates the historicity of the Synoptic Gospels in their historical milieu.

The Ghanaian theologian, Robert Owusu Agyarko, is a trailblazer of Contextual Christian pneumatology in Ghana. So far, he is the pioneer scholar to contribute a systematic contextualization of the Holy Spirit based on the Akan concept of sunsum, which means “spirit” to Akan studies and research. His background as a Pentecostal, combined with theological scholarship, has made him a passionate and valuable contributor to pneumatological discourses in Africa. Agyarko has over the years researched on several dimensions of Akan pneumatology ranging from ecological theology to Christological pneumatology. This is a review article of Agyarko's works in contextual pneumatology and how his contribution to African scholarship is reviving pneumatological discussion in Africa.

Pastors have an infinite capacity to hurt as they console and encourage the disheartened, discouraged, low-spirited, depressed members. They have deep gnawing abrasions, injuries that remain festering. Sometimes, pastors put up a brave face as emotional beings for the congregation's sake. Pastors often face situations that leave them emotionally wounded, thereby affecting their effectiveness in ministry. If not addressed, such emotional wounds impede their pastoral ministry. The unhealed memories in their ministry practice contribute to emotional damage that may impair the pastors' ability to perform their ministerial duties. The purpose of this paper is to explore the causes of emotional damage from a biblical and theological perspective and other relevant sources recommending ways pastors can experience emotional healing that aims at improving their pastoral effectiveness.

It is pointed out that mission is the church's primary task. Mission is God's universal invitation to all persons to confess Jesus' sovereignty and acknowledge this sovereignty in their thoughts, actions, and emotional expressions (Rom 14:11; Phil 2:11). Missiologists and theologians have proposed several strategies for effective Christian missions. However, some of these approaches involve activities that often undermine the culture of the recipient community, thereby affecting the goal of mission-discipleship. This article proposes that Paul's model of discipleship can sustain a functional model for effective Christian discipleship in Africa. The article demonstrates various ways in which Paul's experience, proclamation, and modeling enhanced his quest to disciple people of different cultures. The article recommends Paul's discipleship model as a standard for effective Christian discipleship in African societies today.

The book of Proverbs as a practical book covers diverse issues of life including injunctions on health. Many studies have been done on the relationship between faith and health, religion, medicine, and healthcare. However, much has not been done to appraise healthrelated texts in the book of Proverbs. Hence, this study seeks to investigate the credibility of the health inferences in the book of proverbs in the light of modern health knowledge. Through an interdisciplinary approach and exegetical analysis of some texts, this study discovers that there is harmony between the health injunctions in Proverbs and modern health knowledge. Also, the health messages contained in proverbs are still credible and universally applicable.

Since the ultimate aim of Christianity is the second coming of Jesus and the arrival of the Kingdom of God, the delaying issue of the second coming of Jesus is one of the most important issues to be solved by Christian theology. Modern theologians have made a theoretical effort to solve the problem of the delay of Jesus' second coming. Theologians of the Liberal Theology (19's), which emerged as an antithesis for Orthodox Theology, tried to solve this problem by culturalizating the Christian eschatology. However, they removed the objective characteristic of Christian eschatology by limiting Christ's second coming and the Kingdom of God to its intrinsic value. Emerging as an antithesis against the liberal theology, Neo-orthodox Theology transcended the Kingdom of God. But they also lost the objectivity of Jesus' Second Coming and hope for the Kingdom of God by the Christian eschatology as it is. Such Theologians of Hope as Moltmann appeared in the middle of the 20th century, and they sought synthesis in the area of the Christian eschatology. The Theology of Hope has completely futurized the Christian eschatology. By emphasizing the future nature of the Kingdom of God, the historicity of Christian eschatology was challenged. In this study, I analyzed the understanding of Christian eschatology in modern theology with a historical dialectic method, and proposed the historical understanding of the Kingdom of God as a synthesis of Christian eschatology. That is, to understand Christian eschatology as the correct Christian theology, we should pursue the historical understanding that the Kingdom of God was presented in the past as the Crucifixion of Christ, and is realized today in the lives of Christians, and will be completed in the future through the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

This study intends to analyze Deut 32:4-9 through textual criticism. There are several critical deviations between the MT and the LXX. This study examines why these deviations occur and which of MT and LXX is closer to the original text. In particular, as the difference between MT and LXX is mainly related to theological issues, the MT preserves the tradition of the original text relatively well compared to the LXX. But sometimes, it has been modified to reflect the theological position of the scribes. On the other hand, LXX has a close connection to SP in many parts. It seems to have been modified and supplemented to suit the translator's theological and cultural position.

8Importance of Women's Leadership Roles in Contemporary Cross-Cultural Missions in Nigeria

초록보기

The cultural perception about the leadership roles of women in Nigeria has led to mission strategies that focus on men in the hope that they, as heads of their families and communities, will reach out to the female gender and the children. Unfortunately, most men do not convey the message to their women. This dilemma, which often slows down missionary works in the Nigerian cross-cultural context, is both theological and cultural. Though Nigerians have a paradoxical view emanating from most of their traditional African religious beliefs and worldviews, their perception on this subject is a blend of views from other cultural encounters. Apart from exposure to a host of cultures through electronic and mass media, Nigerian cultural space has been influenced by the Arabic and Western cultures that accompanied Islam and Christianity, respectively. Consequently, their decisions are often informed by this blend of perceptions. Using his experience as a cross-cultural missionary, the writer employed a descriptive method for critical elucidation of the importance of women's leadership roles in Nigerian cross-cultural missions. Leaning on complementarianism as a theological perspective, he used relevant sources to consider the Nigerian cultural perspectives about women. He argued that an effective, efficient and sustainable cross-cultural missions in such a context as Nigeria requires all-inclusive strategies that appreciate and incorporate the leadership roles of the female gender as integral parts at every stage of missions. The female missionary has the advantage of access, which her male counterpart may not have, of contact and ministry with the unreached female individuals. With her understanding of the host culture, she may project the positive feminine virtues and be able to present the gospel message through day-to-day relationship. She can also nurture the female believers and develop leaders among them until there is sufficient gospel impact that brings cultural transformation in the community.

초록보기

Africans are good in oral transmission of truth and knowledge, which enhance a very powerful use of proverbs and adage. Surprisingly, African proverbs have been neglected in Biblical Hermeneutic discourse on this continent. The paper aims to recall our attention to the important value of Proverbs in the knowledge of the Bible and tends to apply the efficacy of African proverbs in teaching biblical truth, first to African and others. This venture will validate the belief that every aspect of African's life has a religion connotation.
African proverbs' main concerns relate to every aspect of human life. It is to teach wisdom and moral lessons. Thus they contain, and are used to convey, moral lessons and advice on how to live a good and prosperous life. African proverbs are highly important as a tool for teaching moral and social values, and how to conduct oneself successfully in the business of life. Proverbs have the power to change people's conduct, because the truths portrayed in them are so plain and unchallengeable that those who understand the morals and advice they contain, feel compelled to conduct their lives in the manner prescribed in the proverbs by the wise elders of old. The work explores some opportunities for using African proverbs as a tool in teaching biblical truth. This experience draws the meaning of the Bible not only to the African readers but every reader.

초록보기

The objective of this present cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship between faith, healthy lifestyle practices, and health statuses among the Korean Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) study population in Seoul, Korea. The outcomes of the study included the frequency tables to show general information of the Korean SDA study participants including frequency of lifestyle practices and health statuses. Also, a Chi-square test was used to evaluate the association of faith/spirituality with lifestyle practices and health statuses; lifestyle practices with the years of belonging to SDA church; and lifestyle practices with the overall church meeting. Furthermore, a Spearman's correlation test was performed to examine the association of acceptance of SDA health message and lifestyle practice among the Korean SDA church members. The study results indicated that the Korean SDA participants with higher religious/spiritual belief or faith tend to show statistically significant association with abstinence from substance abuse such as alcohol and tobacco and less chances of having hypertension and diabetes. There was also significant relationship between substance abuse and spirituality by negative correlation while Sabbath rest, diet, sleep pattern, water intake, sun exposure and exercise showed significant association with spirituality by a positive correlation. While the Korean SDA study participants showed lower rate of chronic disease and higher rate of healthy lifestyle practice, it was found that the higher level of faith exhibited less disease promoting-risky lifestyle factors, more health promotingprotective lifestyle factors, and better health statuses. Such outcomes were also shown in the Korean-American SDAs study participants residing in Texas studied by the same authors; and both Korean Adventists' practice of healthy lifestyle and achievement of health status were better than a general population living in both USA and Korea.

Individuals in pastoral ministry may be so used to “preaching the word,” offering guidance and exhortation that they may forget when it is necessary to observe silence. Their inner chatter that is motivated by unhealed wounds may be the contributing factor to their failure to effectively use silence. In their view, maintaining quietness in cases of grief may seem to be indicative of the lack of solutions for the presenting problems. This article explores the use of silence in providing spiritual care. It is based on the stories of Hannah's grief and Job's crisis. The responses of Eli and Job's friends in the face of a calamity may be representative of some spiritual care responses.
In order to arrive at the desired end of this article, the strong and weak points of priest Eli and Job's three friends are reviewed. A theological study of 1 Samuel 1:9 to 16, Job 2:11 to 13 and their immediate contexts is engaged in to understand the effect of the silence and some portions of Job are examined to assess the effect of their words. The pitfalls of inappropriate use of silence by Job's friends are also dealt with. The impact of power dynamics at play and inner chatter in both narratives is looked into. The use of power dynamics as it relates to therapeutic silence in providing care is explored. Further to that, current findings on the use of silence in the fields of chaplaincy, spiritual care, psychotherapy and counselling are utilised.

4A Study on the Recognition of Death and the Interment Method of Korean Adventists

Death is the last experience of all human life, and it is the crisis that comes with the greatest sorrow for the remaining family. Therefore, funeral ceremonies can be solemn and meaningful events and at the same time, minor differences and mistakes can be the cause of great conflicts among family members or community members. Korean society has recognized 'burial' as the main interment method. Since 1990, however, 'cremation' has been increasing due to environmental and economic causes.
In Korean Christian society, the idea that 'burial' is biblical and consistent with Christian tradition has been dominant for a long time, but theological discussion about interment methods are actively proceeding according to the influence of social change. On the other hand, the Adventist Church in Korea has not been discussing funeral culture. The purpose of this study is to collect opinions regarding deaths and funerals of Korean Adventist Church members for further theological discussions.
According to the findings of this study, Korean Adventists prefer 'cremation', like other Korean people. However, since the preference for 'burial' is still high in the older age group, the study suggested that on the denominational level dialogue between the generations should be coordinated with the concept of interment methods and prepare a ritual manual, funeral facilities, and sites for 'cremation'.

5Archaeological Finds at Shiloh and their Theological/Missiological Implications

The relationship between archaeology and the Bible has long been debated, leading to conflicting viewpoints on historicity and chronology. Scholars from the diachronic and low chronology perspective consider Israel's history as either a myth or a later redaction from different accounts/sources. Those from the synchronic and high chronology perspective garner a range of factual relationships. This article which focuses on Shiloh has shown how the archaeological finds from the tell help in understanding the historicity of the Bible, especially the account of Israel's statement at Shiloh (cf. 1 Sam 4) in the later part of the Late Bronze Age and early period of the Iron Age I. Missiologically, archaeological finds contribute to understanding the biblical narratives and how best the Bible is used for mission. Also, by interlacing the biblical and materialistic history and the reliability of the material culture and findings of Shiloh in the OT, mission can be projected on a more promising way.

The subject of human suffering in general and that of the innocent person in particular is one of the most enigmatic issues in Scripture. Yet the concept of suffering constitutes one of the fulcrums of the Christian faith. Throughout the history of humanity, the question of innocent suffering seems to have left no culture indifferent. This study theologically reflects on the suffering of the man Job whose experience epitomizes all innocent suffering ever endured by mortals. The investigation has revealed that the concept of innocent suffering was not widely accepted in the ancient Near East since suffering was generally imputed to an antecedent offence. Leaning on Job's ordeal, it is argued that the roots of a believer's suffering are not always to be found in some antecedent sins committed by the sufferer. Thus, innocent suffering as depicted in the life of Job should be understood in the context of the ongoing Great Controversy.
