The purpose of this research is to seek a way to support multicultural children to learn Korean language, which is a school language, while multicultural children adopt multilingual environment and multicultural environment naturally. Recently, Early childhood education sector of Korea has also developed a language program for multicultural children, which has been implemented at a multicultural kindergarten and links with the Nuri curriculum, The integrated curriculum of Kindergarten education and Childcare Center education in Korea. However, there are not enough programs for parents of multicultural families. The involvement of parents with multicultural backgrounds in kindergarten education can help sociolinguistic diversity by not only teachers who are the main mediator of education, but also parents as they work together to understand the language of multicultural children. In this context, the “Language Awareness” program is based on the fact that all languages are useful for language development of infants and children. It is a language teaching methodology for multicultural children through multilingual environment and multicultural approach. In addition, participation of parents in kindergarten education can form a sense of solidarity among children, teachers, and parents, and can help children of multicultural families adapt to kindergarten in Korea. This approach is also helpful for multicultural children to establish a more positive identity by learning their mother tongue with their peers in kindergarten setting. This program contributes to both multicultural children and other children in the kindergarten. Non-multicultural children are also exposed to various languages, allowing them to have a more open-view of their own and other languages, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, thus helping them gain access to other languages and cultural diversity. Through this process, it develops the ability to learn Korean with a comparative perspective that can distinguish phonemic distinctions and syllable differences and similarities in each language. This study investigated the correlations among L2 academic motivation, language anxiety, and acculturation of immigrant adolescents. Gardner(1885)'s AMTB, Horwitz et el.(1986)'s FLCAS, Barry(2001)'s EAAM, and Unger et al.(2002)'s AHIMSA scale were employed to implement the surveys on 77 immigrant adolescents in a high school. To analyse the data, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and t test were applied. The study found out that (1) the immigrant adolescents who had a tendency of integration in acculturation had higher academic motivation; (2) separation and marginalization were positively correlated with language anxiety; (3) the shorter the immigrant adolescents stayed in Korea and studied Korean language, the higher their academic motivation were; (4) the Vietnamese learners' academic motivation was higher than the Chinese learners' one. This study aims to compare and analyze the bilingual education policies in both Korea and Australia. Both countries had an identity, historically as a homogeneous nation in the past, but have now acknowledged the constantly changing situations in the ever increasing number of immigrants that occurred in Australia during the 1970s and in Korea during the 2000s have respectively started to implement and review their multicultural policies. In the case of Australia, which holds a longer history of multicultural policies than Korea, may be able to provide potential implications for the development of a bilingual education policy in Korea. This study has analyzed the policy documents in both Korea and Australia and supplemented them by both an e-mail and telephone interviews with the key people concerned. We have discovered that Korea has been implementing a bilingual education policy as a part of its multicultural policy since 2006. However, while it is still in a 'transitional bilingual education paradigm' targeting primarily on immigrant students, Australia's policy is moving beyond transitional and conservative bilingual education elements to additional bilingual education for all students, and LOTE(Language Other Than English) also includes Auslan(Australian Sign Language).
Based on this analysis, the potential implications for a successful bilingual education policy in Korea are derived as follows: 1. The policy should move away from the paradigm of transitional bilingual education to help immigrant students adapt to Korean society and to move into a bilingual education policy to achieve an authentic and cohesive multicultural society. In order to do this, however, we will need to propose a method to reorganize the second foreign language education to select the languages of the community from the viewpoint of a bilingual education. 2. When choosing a language for a bilingual education, it is necessary to consider it from the perspective of the minority in our society. 3. In order to change the direction of the bilingual education policy, bilingual education and special education teacher policies should be revised as well. This study will discuss the integration of language and culture teaching by using idiomatic expressions, which include both linguistic and cultural contents. We first review preliminary studies on phraseology and phraseo-didactics to understand recent research trends. Second, we will explore the possibility of introducing idiomatic expressions to integrate language and culture teaching in actual French education, especially based on an intercultural approach. Finally, a teaching model for integrating language and culture by using French idiomatic expressions will be proposed for B1 French learners in Korean universities. The aim of this study is to examine international students' anxiety in lectures that are delivered in the Korean language. In general, foreign students are accepted in Korean universities after they achieve certain level of Korean in a language institute. Once entering a university, they attend lectures and participate in relevant activities from Korean professors in Korean. However, it is reported that only about 30% of all international students are TOPIK level 4 or above, which is the minimum level for college scholastic ability. Rest of them, lower than level 4. In reality, under level 4 is unlikely to successfully complete a college course in Korea. To improve such a situation, many supportive curricula have been developed for foreign students that have less competent Korean communication skills. Along with those curricula, the researchers of this study believe that anxiety that international students have should be examined first: What kinds of anxiety do they have? And what causes anxiety? To describe the anxiety, the researchers conducted a survey of 137 foreign students, examining their learning style, listening comprehension, and listening anxiety to analyze relations with lecture anxiety. As a result, it is found that the lecture anxiety of international students has a positive correlation with listening comprehension and listening anxiety, rather than learning style. Three repetition priming experiments were conducted to examine trilingual lexical processing by Korean-Chinese college students in Yanbian, China. To measure intra-language and inter-language priming effects, primes were presented masked or visible. For visible primes, two SOAs (stimulus onset asynchrony) were adopted: 100 msec and 300 msec. Target words were presented in Korean (L1) in Exp. 1, in Chinese (L2) in Exp. 2, and in English in Exp. 3. The results of three experiments revealed significant intra- and inter-language priming effects, but those effects were larger for Chinese primes than for Korean primes. The priming effects for English targets were also larger when the targets followed Chinese primes than Korean primes. In sum, the processing of Chinese words (L2) were faster than Korean words (L1). The results were difficult to explain with the RHM model in which L1 plays a dominant role. Based on the results, trilingual lexical representation and processing were discussed. The item response theory(IRT) is an analytical method that makes it possible to objectively inspect the characteristics of items and that makes it possible to exam the non-objectivity possessed by a number of sources, in which they would check validation by language assessment research. In this paper, item response theory analysis were conducted on the large scale implementation result for the Korean Speaking Test for Academic Purposes(KoSTAP). The test results were constructed systematically so that the meaning of the IRT analysis can be seen in the test and scoring process. For the analysis of the results, General Partial Credit Model(GPCM) is selected and the effect of the rater is considered in the characteristics of the performance test. Based on the analysis, the characteristics of KoSTAP were investigated mainly on parameters for item, rater, and person. Finally, with the test results, we looked at whether KoSTAP was objective characteristics and presented an ideal direction to improve its validity as a large-scale high-stakes test. This study observed the differences in the usages of Sino-Korean Synonyms, and investigated the differences and similarities from several perspectives. The characteristics observed in the corresponding relationships between two languages are as follows:
1) The words of the same usage in Korean and Chinese are mainly adjectives, nouns, and gerunds.
2) The parts of speech with a higher frequency of different usages are [+ADN] and [+ADV].
3) Apart from the parts of speech, [+ADJ] and [+N], other Sino-Korean synonyms generally share the same usages and other usages with Korean.
4) For Sino-Korean words with more than 2 usages, the meanings in Chinese are usually the same as those in Korean; or a part of usages are the same, but there are also other usages.
5) If the usages of Sino-Korean Synonyms are the same, there is almost no difference in semantics. Under the situation where the usages are different, there are usually differences in semantics.
This study found that the inconsistency in usages of Sino-Korean synonyms is highly correlated with the difference in function, difference in semantics, whether they are free morpheme, difference in part of speech conversion method, and system of parts of speech. (National University of Kaohsiung)

The purpose of this study is to observe the experience and understanding of Korean teachers with more than 10 years of experience and to analyze the findings to seek an approach to take in re-educating these subjects. Especially, this study aimed to focus on the factor of 'teaching professionalism' which is a mandatory aspect required for Korean teachers to ensure an effective management of the lectures. In order to do this, we proceeded with depth interview on 4 teachers with more than 10 years of working experience in Korean Education Institution affiliated to local universities. The questionnaires consisted of three categories; experience in teacher education related to development of teaching professionalism in the past, self-analysis on current teaching professionalism, expectations and demand on development of teaching professionalism in future. The main facts evaluated from these interviews are as following. First, the teachers had been able to enhance the development of through teacher training organized by education institution earlier in their career. Second, teachers understand that their teaching professionalism is not significantly improved compared to the earlier stage of their career. Third, the teachers did not have a strong belief that their teaching professionalism will significantly improve but they all had high expectations and demands on re-education for their teaching professionalism development. The fourth chapter of this study suggests possible solutions for developing teaching professionalism for experienced Korean teachers at in-depth period based on the findings from depth interviews and divides these solutions into three different levels; individual teacher, educational institution, and governmental institution. This study examines 'vocabulary education' as a field of Korean language education that has continuously sought new contents and methods of education in accordance with the changes and development of the times. In particular, the research focuses on the changes in the contents and methods of vocabulary education in the recently published Korean textbooks and tries to find a desirable approach to the vocabulary in Korean textbooks. In this study, five requirements for the lexical domain of Korean textbooks were chosen through analysis of previous research. First, the appropriate vocabulary and vocabulary amount should be determined considering the level and goals of the learner. Second, the target vocabulary categorized in relation to the subject / function of the unit should be presented in the syllabus. Third, the meaning and usage information of target vocabulary should be presented. Fourth, pattern-drills and meaningful practice for target vocabulary learning should be provided. Fifth, the target vocabulary should be utilized in the understanding and performance of topic and function. This study analyzed textbooks published in the 1990s and after 2010. As a result, the current textbooks deal more with vocabulary than the textbooks until the 1990s, and the recognition of the importance of vocabulary in communication ability is reflected in the textbooks. However, there is still a need to improve the effective presentation and practice of vocabulary. This study suggests the directions for presenting vocabulary in Korean textbooks. First, it is necessary to present a vocabulary with a device that can help to understand the meaning and use of the target vocabulary. Second, it is necessary to develop and apply various exercises for target vocabulary to help understand the morphological, syntactic, and phonological constraints associated with the use of each vocabulary. Third, in the case of integrated textbooks, it should be planned to construct a dialogue or text containing the target vocabulary in the task of performing each function. (Kyunggi University)
