The untimely death of Shin Hae-chul (b. 1968) in 2014 is an incident whose full significance we have yet to grasp. After spending his teenager days as a rock kid in Dobong district of Seoul during the 1980s, shin became a succesful pop star in the late 1980s. Then he formed N.ex.T, one of the most influential rock bands in the mid-1990s. From then on, he also positioned himself as a spokesman of liberal politics through his critique of South Korean society. This paper traces Shin’s geographic mobility and decodes the meanings of different places in Seoul (Jongro, Yeouido, and Gangnam) and London where he had studied music. By examining his practices in different places, the paper highlights the moments of his struggles in popular music and beyond. Shin Hae-chul’s creativity lies in the communicative value and intensity of his performance.

초록보기

The former U. S. President Donald Trump's well-known motto, “Make America Great Again,” while invoking the authority of America's Manifest Destiny, works as a rallying cry for American Exceptionalism. With such conservative nationalism, Trump poses himself as a bastion of Christianity and law, whose rightful enforcement is exemplified by the brutal military suppression of the Black Lives Matter Movement nationwide. To trace back to the origin of how Trump's Evangelical rhetoric serves to legitimize American Exceptionalism and institutionalized racism, this paper revisits one of the eighteenth-century Protestant spiritual autobiographies and overseas colonial adventure stories, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.
Just as Trump turns to the Evangelical mission for the jingoistic self-definition of who Americans are, Defoe's classical work reappropriates Protestant Providentialism in order to flesh out England's nascent imperial ideals. Trump's exceptionalism resuscitates the America's by masquerading it as the accepted norms of American democracy. In a very similar vein, Defoe's narrator deviates from the conventional structure of tensions intrinsic to Spiritual Autobiography and Early Modern adventure narratives, the conflicts between free will and God's ways, original sin and redemption, colonialism and cannibalistic threat. Crusoe ultimately tilts the balance in favor of his egocentric construal of Providence and unabashedly cracks the mysteries of divine will in order to justify his imperial desire and British Exceptionalism. Crucial to Crusoe's egoistic turn, this paper argues, is the role of Friday, whose voluntary and willing embracement of Crusoe's cultural imperialism frees the protagonist from the ethical burdens of such a unilateral exceptionalism.

This paper examines the representation of the garret in Harriet Jacobs's slave narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861). Applying Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner's framework with specific focus on the liminal or marginal period in rites of passage, I argue that Incidents is an autobiographical slave narrative that highlights the danger of being a fugitive and thus the difficulty of becoming a freeman. As the narrative centers on Jacobs' almost seven years of experience in the garret, the ambiguous and unstable status of a fugitive slave in “betwixt and between” is clearly underlined. By turning her garret into a political space to manipulate the master, and breaking the taboos on a Christian woman, Jacobs attempts to protest and subvert the white male society and contests the boundaries of race, gender, and class. The garret thus functions as a haven and the site of retreat and resistance for Jacobs, however, it does not guarantee her to further step into the postliminal period for incorporation and becoming a freeman. Difficulty of being aggregated into a white society and abnormal extension of the liminal period reflect the suffering of colored people not only in Jacobs' America but also in today's when we still shout out “Black Lives Matter!”

초록보기

In light of the latest Black Lives Matter movement, this essay revisits the convoluted Afro-Korean history in the U.S. that culminated in the 1992 Los Angeles riots to rethink the meaning of solidarity in the context of racial capitalism. The unprecedented global movement towards transnational and cross-racial alliances has evoked the history of racial triangulation and mutual struggle under white supremacy, as the two racial minorities have vied for political and cultural citizenship. Korean-Canadian writer Ins Choi's 2011 stage play Kim's Convenience offers a contemporary Korean American perspective on the changing contours of the Afro-Korean relationship at a time when previous forms of race-based community disintegrate following the logic of individual success and upward mobility. Set in a small corner store owned by a first-generation Korean immigrant located in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood in Toronto, mundane interactions between the Kims and black customers remind the audience of particular racial perceptions and relationships that operate in this historically charged space within the American cultural imagination. As the play progresses, the Korean-owned convenience store becomes a performative site of transformation where racial histories are evoked and can be reimagined. Kim's Convenience asks that we move beyond the racial past and envision a collective future against structural racism that persists in the form of transnational corporate capitalism.

This article explores the implications of 1 the Road (2018), a fiction produced by an artificial neural network, for the debate on machine creativity. Unlike most of the recent deeplearning writing programs, its creator Ross Goodwin traveled with this neural network machine from New York to New Orleans in a Cadillac equipped with a surveillance camera, a voice recognizer, and GPS. The AI thus had continuous feeds of fresh images and sounds, not unlike a novelist who hits the road searching for an experience. I argue that we can better understand this attempt of 1 the Road when discussed alongside Henry James's realist notion of fiction in his essay “The Art of Fiction” (1884). Even though James is often considered an arch-humanist in his belief that fiction is an expression of the unique personality of a novelist, his idea of experience offers a way of understanding Goodwin's machine as a creative writer. Its algorithmic operation―processing the new sense data via the CNN algorithm and producing the result as writing via the RNN algorithm―is strikingly similar to the workings of the novelist's mind in James's view. I do not argue that those sense data are unmediated, and this fact is reflected in the CNN's algorithm that imitates the human mind. In fact, James asserts that sensory data are the result of mediated selection, which can only be seen through the final result, the writing itself. What I propose is that regardless of whether the machine has a so-called “consciousness,” its writing can affect the reader in similar ways as does a text written by a human being. As long as it works as a linguistic medium to relate the “experience,” which is the algorithmic process of selection and transcription, it is a creative writer.

초록보기

This paper surveys recent studies in early modern English drama with a focus on women's active involvement in the seventeenth-century dramatic production and theater culture. Questioning the powerful cultural paradigm of “the English all-male stage,” critics of the late 1990s called for a need to revise the literary and theater history that had largely excluded women. While feminist critics have brought to our attention how early modern women's literary activities were neglected in the literary criticism, their revisionist projects of discovering women writers comparable to Shakespeare or Jonson fail to account for the women's more extensive contribution to early modern drama and theater culture. In the recent scholarship, the notions of women's dramatic production and theatricality have been considerably expanded to include non-commercial dramatic genres and women's diverse roles and their work in and out of the theater. Pointing out how women thrived in some dramatic genres such as translation, closet drama, and household drama, critics have emphasized the interconnectedness between women's “private” drama and a variety of theatrical traditions and dramatic forms in commercial, public theater. Early modern women's theatricality has also been broadly expanded to reexamine the significance of women's court and street performances, French and Italian actresses in London streets, and women's off-stage or on-page contributions to early modern dramatic literature and performance. Such interdisciplinary efforts have uncovered a diverse range of female theatrical activities beyond the single-sex playhouse stages, which has changed our understanding of early modern drama including the plays of Shakespeare and other canonical authors.

초록보기

This essay examines recent scholarship on imperialism and citizenship in nineteenth-century British literature. Against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter Movement of 2020, events that prompted worldwide discussions on citizenship rights and racial (in)justice, this essay interrogates the relative scarcity of scholarship on citizenship in the subfield of nineteenth-century British literature. Drawing on the postcolonial insight of the North American journal Victorian Studies's widely-discussed special issue for Spring 2020 titled “Undisciplining Victorian Studies,” this essay argues that studies on nineteenth-century citizenship requires an interdisciplinary approach connecting the achievements of diverse disciplines encompassing history, political science, sociology, and more. In the nineteenth century, the British people understood themselves as “British subjects” rather than citizens, which was not yet a concept fully legally embraced though the definition of citizenship was being actively developed in other contexts. Historically, discussions of British national citizenship focused on suffrage, which inevitably emphasized class as the central question. This essay proposes that gender and race deserve more scholarly attention, especially through an expanded understanding of a British imperial citizenship that can encompass more kinds of social belonging beyond the right to vote. The essay concludes by raising the the question of academic citizenship in order to highlight the importance of the inclusion and participation of scholars from both formerly colonized parts of the world and outside the British Empire.

This essay is yet another attempt to reread Wordsworth's representation of history by drawing on the recent advances in trauma theory. While Wordsworth has often been accused of eliding history by substituting its material elements with aestheticized sublime moments of imagination, this essay claims that The Prelude shifts from a sublime approach to history to a traumatized one. The shift represents Wordsworth's exploration of the complex and problematic relationships among memory, trauma, and writing. These issues are also prominent in a recent ethical turn in historiography concerning the role of historians who must heed to the memories of survivors, with an awareness of how the remembrance of the past is sometimes repressed, distorted, and exaggerated. Wordsworth contributes to these debates by providing a model of empathetic representation that bridges the site of individual trauma with a collective form of historical trauma. This model challenges the linear and progressive model of history that calls for dialogical interaction between past and present.

This paper examines how Herman Melville in Billy Budd delves into the interlocking questions of violence of exception, recollection of sympathy, and ethics of salvation. In the novella, Melville's depiction of the titular character's exceptional tragedy-impressed into service and doomed to be executed despite his innocence-reveals the violence of law that victimizes him and the violence of traumatization caused by such victimization. In addition, Melville attends to how Billy's shipmates recall his execution so as to question the ethics of salvation which results from their sympathetic recollection of his death. Melville thus narrativizes Billy's tragic story as a profound critical reflection on the general myths of literature, sympathy, and salvation.

In “On the Concept of History,” Walter Benjamin instructs historians to regard it as their task “to brush history against the grain.” What is emphasized here is the need to “save” the past by investing the failures of the defeated with new historical meanings, rather than merely explicating the successes of victors. I believe that literature has long been performing this task, if not as its sole mission. The Eye of the Night (2012) and The Boy Is Coming (2014) are two recent examples of such literary works. The former delves into the National Guidance League (Bodo Yeonmaeing) massacre, a subject that had been a political taboo for several decades. Advocating the agency and responsibility of historical testimony, The Eye of the Night attests to the horrific details of the massacre as well as to its history of concealment and distortion concerning the massacre, as well as to its horrific details. The Boy Is Coming, on the other hand, questions the agency of testimony, addressing the trauma of the Gwangju Democratization Movement. The novel persistently denies historical sublimation or “working through,” because the historical “grain” it opposes represses historical trauma in the name of sublimation.

This essay seeks to delineate the contours of emotions stemming from multifaceted power relations in our daily lives, a subject that is currently receiving increased attention in Korean studies. The essay focuses on issues of anger and humiliation within the contexts of hierarchical power relations (popularly coined as “Gab-Eul relations”) and emotional labor. The collapse of the feudal class system and its surviving class-consciousness, distorted human relations deriving from rapid industrialization and lack of self-esteem loom behind a social atmosphere that fosters insult. The antidote, this essay argues, is to cultivate diverse forms of “safe relations” with an eye toward creating an open and “loose” coalition within civic society that may restore confidence in the public sphere.

This essay examines the state of Citizen Humanities and its social significance while bearing in mind the future of the humanities in Korea. The flourishing of Citizen Humanities or the “popularization of the humanities” is a complex social phenomenon and an objective reality humanities face in Korea. Citizen Humanities courses can be categorized into six types, depending on the organizer, content, program, audience, execution, and their significance. Citizen Humanities can be abused to reinforce the strategies and language of dominance; it can also provide a site for thinking over the problematics of human dignity and liberation. Therefore, on top of seeking pedagogical innovations for Citizen Humanities, we need to critically examine the abstraction of humanities today and the incompetence of humanities scholars.

This paper interprets Michel Foucault's lecture “What is Enlighten-ment?”(1983) as an outline of philosophical reflection on the public sphere's “aesthetic” dimension. Building on Kant's perspective on French Revolution and Enlightenment, Foucault suggests an affect-oriented conception of the public sphere which justifies his philosophical and political practices as “specific intellectual.” According to Foucault, modern philosophy is a kind of “radical journalism” whose role is to historically diagnose the present constitutive of “ourselves.” This paper examines how Foucault appropriates the Kantian notion of “enthusiasm” and proposes an alternative approach to the constitution and function of the public sphere. It also discusses the tension between the politics of “public sphere” and that of “specific intellectual” as reflected in “Foucault and the Iranian Revolution.”

The Dominican American author Junot Diaz arrived on the U.S. literary scene with his first book of short stories, Drown (1996), which vividly depicts the struggles of Dominican Republic immigrants in New Jersey to realize the American Dream. Diaz was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007), his first novel about a Dominican American family overshadowed by Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship. In 2012, Diaz published This Is How I Lose Her, the second collection of short stories about male infidelity. Despite their thematic and stylistic differences, these books recover the lost voices of immigrants and outsiders who have been forced to keep silent while living in both the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Reading silence as the most explicit sign of violence, Diaz has sought to break oppressive silences through the act of writing. In accordance with this purpose of writing, Diaz's works create a hybrid and polyvocal space where the “invisible” is made visible and the “inaudible” is made audible. I show how Diaz registers multiple presences of outsiders in his three texts.
