This paper aims to clarify the variations of the Rapunzel`s confinement/ salvation motif with the deconstructive approach on The Crying of Lot 49. In Oedipa`s quest, Rapunzel`s motif is variated in three independent artworks of this fiction - Remedios Varo`s "Bordando el Manto Terrestre," the film Cashiered, Richard Wharginger`s The Courier`s Tragedy. The importance of the Rapunzel`s variant motif is focused on the expansive reinforcement of the theme, Oedipa`s frustrated initiation journey for the signified. Oedipa quests for the Tristero as the signified, with her suspicion that she is isolated or trapped in a maze. Her obsessive quest is to find the order out of the disorderly reality. Her quest represents her positive efforts to gain the animateness out of the inertness. Pedipa begins her quest as a preterite. She finds the predomiant sys tem to be an invisible force like a remote control that brings out the degradation of all mankind. Hopes of unlimited improvement in the science and technology turned out to be a fantasy. It reveals that the history of reason has replicated human decadent lives innumerably and has brought out the closed social systems. Her personal quest magnifies public one and her individual consciousness like nightmare becomes the mass paranoia increasingly. Furthermore, she upper/the lower system reproduces the binary oppositions of the predominant/the excluded. Finally, Odedipa falls into a dilemma because of the many informations. In spite of her frustrated search, she plays the very important role, ascending the excluded system to be an equal counterpart against the dominant system .The dominant and the excluded are no longer antagonistic existences but supplementary ones, though the counterforces are distorted. Also, Pynchon suggests that the counterforces should be the sound compatible counterpart because such trials become a solution to prevent the mass destruction and genocide.
