Nineteenth-century Choson Korea experienced frequent and at times violent conflicts between central power and rural society. This phenomenon has often been seen as an indication of general nationwide socio-economic trends of the period, despite the fact that rural unrest was largely dictated by local conditions. The present study suggests that the concept of "social arenas" provides a suitable framework for comparative local history which is needed if conclusions are to be drawn about the nationwide situation from varying local circumstances. This concept presents a dynamic understanding of the relationship between central power and local society and can be used to connect the larger trends of the late Choson period with outbursts of rural unrest. The analysis focuses on the Hong Kyongnae rebellion that erupted in the northwest in 1811 and the riots that spread over the southern part of the peninsula in 1862. The study will show that these two outbursts of rural unrest, despite their different characteristics and the distinctly different social milieus out of which they developed, can be understood in relation to changing relationships between central power and local society.

초록보기

In recent years, South Korean pseudohistorians, who accuse the academic establishment of promoting “colonial-era historiography,” have achieved political influence impacting professional research on early Korea. Their alternative narrative imagines ancient Korea as an expansive continental empire giving rise to northeast Asian civilization. Archetypal to this conceptualization is the apocryphal history Hwandan kogi 桓檀古記 (1979). Placed in the history sections of bookstores, the most accessible edition today is that translated by An Kyo˘ngjo˘n, second-generation patriarch of the syncretic new religion of Chu˘ ngsando. An's Hwandan kogi contains an extensive introduction both synthesizing the full canon of Korean pseudohistory, and incorporating his own millenarian doctrine drawn from Sino-Korean esotericism; An further supplements both these aspects with corresponding Western pseudoscience pertaining to lost civilizations and imminent apocalypse. Situating An's doctrine in diachronic contexts of popular Korean history and new religion, this paper seeks to illuminate one of the lesser known forces currently abetting Korean pseudohistory.

2Official and Private Weights and Measures (Duliangheng 度量衡) during the Qing Dynasty and Contemporary Perceptions

초록보기

There was little consensus among the Qing leadership―which comprised emperors, provincial officials, and the gentry―regarding policy issues arising from the official and private practices of weights and measures. Spearheading a reform initiative seeking to unify weights and measures, the Kangxi Emperor became personally involved in the definition and dissemination of new standards through government publications. However, with later policy proposals tending to limit the scope of this initiative, a more cautious approach was adopted. While the rigorous enforcement and stringent supervision of the official standards sought to eliminate the dishonest practices of merchants, who defined and used weights and measures for selfish gains, reservations soon emerged that the government's interventionist approach might disrupt existing market customs.

3Tomboy: New Womanhood, Stardom, and Chinese Cinema in the 1930s

초록보기

This article explores Tomboy (Huashen guniang 化身姑娘, 1936), arguably one of the most viewed films in China in the mid-1930s, and Yuan Meiyun's 袁美雲 (1917-1999) stardom in prewar Shanghai. Tomboy's popularity was a testimony to the rise of female stardom and female fandom in this decade. The 1930s also saw both the final triumph of the rally for women's rights since the May Fourth period and the Nationalist Party's pro-family, anti-woman backlash. Tomboy catapulted Yuan Meiyun to superstardom in the context of the cacophonous debates on new femininity in China in the relatively conservative mid-1930s. This article thus argues that because Yuan Meiyun exemplified a new type of woman who was modern, attractive, and independent but exempted herself from modern life's vices and hedonism, her eclectic womanhood both on the screen and in the media narrative gained widespread acclaim and thereby contributed to her success as a film star.

초록보기

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on Sin Kyo˘ngsuk's autobiographical novel, Oettanbang (A Lone Room), in which the protagonist factory girl aspires to become a writer. I argue that the protagonist achieves her dream by escaping from her status as a factory girl, the object of sexual violation and stigmatization, and by becoming a middle-class author representing the sexuality of the “factory girl.” At the height of Korean labor literature in the 1980s, the sexuality of women workers was a taboo subject. Oettanbang arrived late on the labor literature scene and broke this taboo. There are repeated episodes in the novel where the author's former colleagues (factory girls) plead with her to write about their stories as well. I argue that the repetition of these episodes reveals the discontent of working-class women with intellectuals speaking on their behalf, as well as the author's own anxiety about appropriation in representing their sexuality

초록보기

Most forms of biography in traditional Korea tend to emphasize a person`s ancestors, birth, and career(cursus honorum), with little attention paid to that person`s external appearance, garb or habits, contemporary details, and private life. Contrarily, writers of the literary miscellany attempt to discover telling details of the subject`s word, deed or gesture, personal views, and idiosyncracies. Their aim is to demonstrate what a man is like by an examination of what he does or says in order to uncover his personality and individual character. They also attribute verbs of inner action to the subject by quotation of speech. Their keen eye is for the single act that reveals the essence of an individual. While official history stresses a public version of the elite self, the literary miscellany describes the life styles and social milieu of all classes officials, secondary sons, interpreters, artisans, physicians, monks, blinds, female entertainers, slaves, merchants to provide a more balanced picture of society than that offered by official history and biography. The vivid depictions of these people illuminate our image of human beings. On the basis of nine works dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, this study attempts to reconstruct images of early Choson society.

2Beyond T Turtleboats: Siege Accounts from Hideyoshi`s Second Invasion of Korea, 1597-1598

초록보기

Toyotomi Hideyoshi`s invasions, which lasted from 1592 to 1598, were perhaps the most traumatic events in the history of Korea. The war produced Korea`s greatest national hero, Admiral Yi Sunsin, and it remains prominent in Korean historical consciousness. While Admiral Yi`s exploits are well-documented in secondary literature, and rightly so, far less attention has thus far been accorded to other dimensions of the conflict, most notably the sieges that characterized most of the fighting during Hideyoshi`s truncated second invasion. Even though the allies were seldom able to dislodge or completely defeat the Japanese invaders, they managed to effect a military victory by virtue of preventing the Japanese from launching any offensives and wearing them down through process of attrition. This article examines various accounts of the sieges of the second Japanese invasion of Korea and discusses their tactical and strategic significance. It also considers these sieges within the larger context of early modern siegecraft in Europe.

초록보기

The American occupation of Japan(1945-1952) decentralized the authoritative Japanese educational system, establishing local and prefectural school boards. When the occupation forces returned home, however, many of these policies were reversed. This paper proposes that motives to spread a particular democracy and a shallow consideration of historical context inhibited a growth of Japanese education. It also explores how a richer contextual understanding could have influenced four areas of reform: training of education staff; communication between Occupation staff and unionizing Japanese teachers; concentration on ideology over methodology; and the evaluation of the centralized Japanese education system.
