김말봉은 1947년부터 『화려한 지옥』을 비롯하여 『별들의 고향』 등 장편을 잇달아 발표했다. 이 두 편의 소설들은 각각 해방과 전쟁이라는 격동기를 살아가는 사람들의 이야기를 비교적 실시간으로 포착, 형상화하여 당시 현실과 세태를 담아냈다는 점에서 공통적이다. 또 작품의 시간적 배경 역시 두 편의 소설이 순차적으로 연결되어 파노라마처럼 펼쳐진다. 『화려한 지옥』은 1946년 봄부터 1947년 초까지를, 『별들의 고향』은 1947년 12월부터 1951년까지를 소설적 배경으로 삼고 있다. 따라서 이들 작품을 검토하면 당대를 살아가는 대중들의 해방과 전쟁에 대한 인식은 물론 그들의 정서와 생활, 이념과 사랑의 풍속도를 어느 정도 복원해 낼 수 있을 것이다. 김말봉의 소설에는 선과 악이라는 도덕적 양극화로 인물을 설정하고, 선하고 약한 인물 편에 완벽하고 이상적 인물을 배치하여 이들을 지원하는 조력자 역할을 맡긴다는 데에 공통점이 있다. 특히 선한 인물 쪽에는 가난하고 버림받은 여성이거나 이상적인 여성을, 악한 인물 편에는 부도덕하고 파렴치한 남성을 설정하는 도식성을 보인다. 이들은 대부분 대중소설의 공식에 따라 권선징악과 해피앤딩이라는 결말로 마무리된다. 김말봉의 『화려한 지옥』과 『별들의 고향』은 해방과 전쟁기의 혼란한 남한 현실을 전편에 깔고, 반공이념을 강조한 계몽적 대중소설이다. 공창폐지운동이라는 정책에 동조하고, 반공이라는 국시에 부응하는 선량하고 도덕적인 인물이 결국은 살아남고, 행복을 쟁취한다는 메시지를 종교적 휴머니즘 차원까지 끌어올렸다. 즉 김말봉은 그의 소설을 통해 공창이나 이념 갈등, 전쟁 등 폭력적이고 비인간화를 조장하는 제도나 사건 등은 반드시 개선되어야 하나, 그 제도나 이념보다 앞서는 것이 ``인간``이라는 사실을 강조하고자 했다.
Kim Mal-Bong published long novels such as Stars` hometown successively from 1947, including Splendid Hell. These two novels reflect the actual and the social condition of those days by catching comparatively instantly and embodying the stories of the people who suffer through the period of liberation and war, which is common to the novels. Besides, the settings of these two novels are linked in serial and extended like a panorama. The setting of Splendid Hell is from the spring of 1946 to the early part of 1947, and that of Stars` Hometown is from December of 1947 to 1951. Therefore, I think, the studying of these novels makes it possible to reconstruct to some extent not only the cognition of the people of those days on liberation and war but also their feeling and lives and the customs of their ideology and love. Kim Mal-Bong fixes characters as moral extremes like the confrontation of the good to the evil and posts perfect and ideal character by good and weak character, making the former support the latter as assistants, which is common to Kim Mal-Bong` novels. Above all, good character takes part with poor and abandoned woman or ideal woman and evil character takes part with immoral and shameless man, which enables the image of sex confrontation to be highlighted. The ending of these novels complies with the formular of popular novels like Kwon-son-ching-ak(rewarding the good and punishing the wicked) and the happy-ending. Kim Mal-Bong`s Splendid hell and Stars` Hometown are enlightening popular novels where the chaos of South Korea during liberation and war forms the basis of whole works and anti-Communism is stressed. The message that good and moral character who complies with a purification campaign and acts up to the national policy of anti-Communism finally survives and wins happiness is extended into the level of religious humanism. In other words, Kim Mal-Bong admits that the system and the incidents that promote violence and inhumanity such as licensed prostitution, ideological trouble, and war have to be improved but intends to stress that ``a human`` be before the system or ideology.
