Individuals and societies are deeply interrelated and have a strong influence on each other. Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights represents this relationship through the various interactions between the characters, especially between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. As described by the theory of Carl Gustave Jung in Persona, Shadow and Anima and Animus, this paper will not only analyze the patriarchal society's harsh pressure on and requirements for Heathcliff and Catherine but also explore how it impacted both of them consciously and unconsciously. As in Pandora's Box, the realm of unconsciousness can illustrate the complicated and hidden reasons for the disconnection between their souls. By providing clues about their separation beneath the surface to the readers, Brontë gives a clear sense of the cruelness of the social prejudice and pressure that leads both Heathcliff and Catherine to their deaths, the only and final means for them to reunify. This paper aims to analyze Billy-Ray Belcourt's NDN Coping Mechanisms: Notes from the Field through the concept of the politics of body, utopia, and grief. For Belcourt, race and sexual contradiction are not intangible agendas but physical issues. He foregrounds the body as the actual field on which white heterosexuality discourses are exerted and engraved. Differentiated from other contemporary Canadian aboriginal writers, Belcourt regards the racial and the sexual as not separated but intersected on the axis of colonialism. For him, the indigeneity and the queerness are linguistically constructed on the body by the colonial discourses. Armed with post-structuralism, queer theory, feminism, post-colonialism, and intersectionalism, Belcourt practices, reforms, and revolutionizes the legacy of modernist and postmodernist literary techniques. As a writer of minor literature, he produces the text of symptom which can be a new exit for the congested contemporary world literature. For him minor literature is not confined to the private interests of minorities but touches the whole system, which constructs the unequal and unjust hierarchy and makes the minor literature very political and historical. Such meta-theatrical dramas as Desire under the Elms and Buried Child principally show the inner confliction of paranoiac delusional disorder and obsession derived from incest, Oedipus complex, and Lacanian imaginary's mirror stage. Both of these literary works destroy the illusion and fabrication of the American family myth and success dream based on the patriarchal system and Christian logocentric authority. They disclose the political duplicity and distortion of American culture, which has divided the invisible dichotomous border between sexuality genders, reality and simulacre, races, consumer classes, and signifier and signified. These expressionistic, absurd, and hyper-realistic meta-dramas show the paradox, tragicomedy, irony, violence, regression, subversion, sexual perversion, aphasia, and frequent slip of tongue in the recirculing stage of multilevel structures confused with past and present. This essay aims to analyze the dramatic irony of reality and fantasy in Alan Ayckbourn's Woman in Mind focusing on the transition of being illogical, which leads to the fantasy world in the mind of Susan, the central character of the play, who experiences mental illness. As a farcical comedy, the play deals with the dark side of human nature by depicting the development of incomprehensive destructiveness of a woman who suffers pain, frustration, and despair trapped in her mental delusion due to the absence of communication among families. Throughout the action of Woman in Mind, it reveals the boredom of the English middle class and the broader societal issues of modern English culture. This essay also explores how Ayckbourn dramatizes the dark and abstract line of consciousness between fantasy and reality through a simultaneous plot line with dramatic devices in order to draw sympathy and laughter from the audience with allegorical and passive elements and without a conventional comic ending. This study focuses on the translators of the history of translation of The Waste Land. which has been translated by dozens of translators since it was first introduced in Korea in 1935. For research, all translations which were published from 1935 to 1997 were investigated, and the intentions and characteristics of each translation was examined in detail. The translators have chosen different translation styles depending on the circumstances of the times. In the Japanese colonial period, the translators translated a variety of foreign literature. When the translation works were introduced to Korea, they were intended to further develop Korean literature. In the period of national stability, the theory of translation and the method of the correct translation of poetry were established. In modern times, translators have attempted easy-to-read translations and various translation methods for readers. All translators had their own strong intentions and theories for translation, and had something in common, which was that they hoped for the expansion of the base of English poetry and the development of their own literature. The goal of this study is to seek a simple but useful way to explain varying degrees of meanings of modal verb can, and to consider its pedagogical implication by searching for the possibility of an effectively organized grammar book. After examining an apparently complicated array of modal meanings of the verb can, this study adopts an approach that categorizes modal auxiliary verbs on the basis of a three-way classification of epistemic, deontic and dynamic modality. This classification is based on the recognition, as has been borne out by many studies, that the notion of dynamic modality will comprise all sorts of modal meanings that have not been properly accounted for. This study also examines how five well-known grammar books for intermediate to advanced learners not only neglect to deal with sufficiently extensive modal usages but also fail to present effective ways to systematically and effectively explain away some of the more intractable modal meanings. 7A Corpus-Based Analysis of Children's English Books and Elementary School English Textbooks in Linguistic Features and Readability

This is a corpus-based, comparative study of 80 sample texts from elementary school English textbooks and 100 sample texts from children's English books selected by the Ministry of Education in Korea. It focuses on analysing the characteristics of texts using the Wordsmith and Coh-Metrix tools to evaluate the appropriateness of linguistic features and readability in EFL reading texts for primary schools. The quantitative results show significant lexical differences between the two different samples: Storybooks show a higher level of text difficulty in relation to lexical coverage, number of words and word length, and pronoun use. Intergroup differences are found in the age of acquisition, imageability, and concreteness in different ways. At the level of syntactic and discursive features, the results partially show statistical significance between the two samples. Finally, the two sample text groups reveal significant differences in readability. These findings may help in providing standards for evaluating text comprehension and thus have implications for selecting useful EFL reading materials at primary schools. 8The Markedness and Acquisition of English One-Tone-Unit Statements

The current study examines the markedness of the various elements concerning the system of intonation at the vertical level and the structure of intonation at the horizontal level and aims to construct the intonational markedness continuum which enlightens the acquisition order, learning difficulty and language transfer of intonation. Analysis of the markedness of English one-tone-unit statements shows that 1) The nucleus usually goes to the last lexical item, and this is the unmarked tonicity; 2) Falls with wider distribution, higher frequency, simpler structure become the unmarked tones for statements; other tones such as rises, Fall-Rise/Rise-Fall, or Level tones constitute a continuum from less marked to more marked; 3) Low pre-head is more common with wider distribution than high pre-head, hence the unmarked pre-head; 4) High head is less marked since it is more common in a wider environment than low head, rising head, and falling head, and the latter three are designated to occur with specific nucleus tones. Predictions about the acquisition order, learning difficulty and language transfer in intonation acquisition are proposed according to the negative correlation between markedness and acquisition, which can facilitate intonation acquisition in a more scientific and logical way. The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of the explicit and implicit teaching methods in relation to the instruction of English academic vocabulary in liberal arts at the university level. For this study, two classes were divided into an experimental group (explicit instruction) and a comparative group (implicit instruction). For the 16-week experimental period, quantitative data were collected from academic vocabulary tests and mid/final exams, and qualitative data were collected via interviews with students and the comments on the course evaluation. As a result of applying two different methods of vocabulary instruction, it was found that the teaching method and the learning period were simultaneously involved in the variables that interfere with the effect of vocabulary learning. Another area that the teaching method affects is the area related to grasping power, and here too, an important difference was found between the knowledge area of academic vocabulary and the area of application of academic vocabulary. It could be observed that the effect of increasing awareness and imprinting on the vocabulary brought about by the explicit vocabulary instruction has a distinct difference in the effect in the context of using the corresponding vocabulary rather than in the case of seeing and understanding academic vocabulary even after a period of time has elapsed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the learner's perception regarding the teaching, cognitive, and social presence on the course satisfaction of university language lectures in the COVID-19 non-face-to-face situation. The differences in the level of presence by each grade were also examined based on the lecture experience. Data for this research were collected from 370 participants. The result revealed that when teaching, cognitive and social presence were high, the level of course satisfaction was high accordingly. In addition, the level of course satisfaction increased with statistical meaningfulness in relation to the year of the students. The fact that the level of the presence in the freshmen was comprehensively low might shed light on the necessity for professors to provide more information and interaction opportunities in non-contact lectures.
