Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the activation, the onset time, and the duration of the suprahyoid, infrahyoid, and masseter muscle of effortful swallowing with static occlusion in healthy adults. Methods This study was conducted on 30 healthy adults. In this study, four swallowing methods were compared. Normal swallowing (NS) (5 times), normal swallowing with occlusion (NSO) (5 times), effortful swallowing (ES) (5 times), and effortful swallowing with occlusion (ESO) (5 times) were counterbalanced to exclude the order effect. NS (5 times), NSO (5 times), ES (5 times), and ESO (5 times) were counterbalanced to exclude the order effect. The time interval between each swallow was 30 seconds, and a rest of 5 minutes was provided between swallows according to each state. The surface electromyography was used to analyze the activity of the suprahyoid, infrahyoid, and masseter muscles activation, onset time, and duration. Results The activity of the suprahyoid muscle was the highest among the four swallowing methods (p<.05). The activity of masseter muscle was the highest among the four swallowing methods in ESO (p<.05). As a result of onset time analysis, ESO, ES, and NSO appeared significantly faster than NS in the suprahyoid muscle (p<.05), and among them, ESO appeared the fastest. As a result of analyzing the swallowing duration, ESO was the longest in the suprahyoid muscle (p<.05). Conclusion These findings suggest that ESO may be more effective in response time to swallowing than conventional ES or NSO.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) in combination with low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (LF-rTMS) on balance, gait, and cortical activity in chronic stroke patients. Methods In this study, 6 patients with chronic stroke were divided into 3 patients in the LF-rTMS group combined with neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) and 3 patients in the sham-rTMS group combined with NDT. In this study, the MTD-balance system, AMTI, MEP amplitude, and MEP latency were evaluated before and after the intervention. Results First, there was a significant difference in weight bearing rate and foot pressure evaluation pre and post intervention in the study group (p<0.05) (p<0.01). Second, there was a significant difference in the study group as a result of the ground reaction force evaluation (p<0.05). Third, there was a statistically significant difference in the MEP latency of the study group as a result of cerebral cortical activity evaluation (p<0.05). Conclusion The result suggests that LF-rTMS combined with NDT were found to be effective in improving balance and gait ability and cerebral cortical activity in chronic stroke patients.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate of rhythmic auditory stimulation feedback training according to auditory perceptual ability on gait variables in patients with stroke. Methods The subjects were 10 stroke patients with less than 2 seconds in TFM test and 10 stroke patients with more than 2 seconds in TFM test. A Zebris FDM-T Treadmill system was used to measure the gait velocity, cadence, step length, stride length, and COP. For the intervention, 4 weeks of rhythmic auditory stimulation feedback training was performed, and variables related to gait and balance were measured. Results There was no significant difference in gait-related variables between the experimental group and the control group (p>0.05), and a statistically significant difference was observed in center of pressure distance (p<.0.05). Conclusion Our findings indicate that stroke patients with good auditory perceptual ability have improved balance ability as a result of rhythmic auditory stimulation feedback training compared to stroke patients with poor auditory perceptual ability.

Purpose This study was to identify the effects of isometric training of the scapular muscles on trunk muscle activity and trunk control in patients with stroke. Methods A total of 25 subjects with stroke were recruited. Subjects were assigned as block randomization to either the study group (n = 13), or the control group (n = 12). Electromyography (EMG) measured muscle activation of trunk flexor and extensors, and trunk control was measured with a Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS). Results Isometric training was significantly improved in the symmetricity of erector spinae thoracic (p<0.05). Trunk control was significantly increased in TIS score (p<0.05). Conclusion Isometric training of the scapular muscle can improve trunk muscle activity symmetry and trunk muscle control in patients with stroke.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of task-oriented activities on Sensory Processing in stroke patients. Methods Twenty stroke patients were divided into two groups: a task-oriented activities group and a traditional occupational therapy group. The intervention sessions were given five times a week for six weeks. Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (AASP) were used to measure the sensory processing before and after Task-Oriented training. And the collected data were analyzed by using the program, SPSS (v.21, IBM, USA). Results Compared to the control group, two group treated by the task-oriented training showed statistically significant improvements in Low Registration. Conclusion This paper shows the task-oriented training showed its effectiveness in developing a sensory processing for stroke patients.

Purpose The purpose of this study was effect of web-based remote breathing exercise on pulmonary function and respiratory strength. Methods A total of 30 students were assigned to 15 in study groups and 15 in control groups. Exercise was performed 3 times a week for a total of 12 times for 4 weeks. Both groups applied an exercise program included breathing exercise and whole body exercise. Results As a result of pulmonary function, there was no significant difference in the study group, and there was a significant difference in the control group for FEV₁, FEV₁/FVC, PEF. Both groups showed significant differences in MEP and MIP for respiratory muscle strength. However, there were no significant differences between groups in all items. Conclusion Breathing exercises help to improve pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength. In particular, remote breathing exercise can be an alternative that can help improve respiratory muscle strength of non-face-to-face social university students with low activity levels.

Purpose This study aimed to compare the effect of a combined Augmented Reality (AR)-Based training and conventional training with a single conventional physical therapy on rapid knee recovery of patients after surgery. Methods Fifty (50) patients with total knee replacement and anterior cruciate ligament surgery were recruited and randomly assigned either to study group (conventional training plus AR-based training) and control group (conventional training). The Goniometer was used to measure knee joint flexion, extension range of motion and the visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess pain. We used the manual muscle test system to measure knee flexor and extensor muscles. The measurements were conducted before surgery, after surgery and after intervention. The intervention was conducted in a total period of 6 weeks. The one-way Repeated ANOVA was performed to see the before-and-after differences between the two groups and the paired sample t-test to analyze the changes within groups. Results We observed a significant difference in all measured outcomes after the intervention in both groups (p< 0.05). However, there was not a significant difference between the two groups for the muscle strength, and pain (p >0.05) with exception of range of motion which was significantly increased in the study group (p<0.05). Conclusion Therefore, according to these results, the addition of AR-based training to the conventional training program is more effective than the conventional training alone and may be use for a rapid recovery of patients after knee surgery.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of alignment of the lower extremity during hip abduction exercise and clamshell exercise. Methods The subjects were twenty healthy men without low back pain or lower limb pain. Subjects performed four gluteus medius exercises: hip abduction (AB), hip abduction with the alignment of the lower extremity (AB-AL), clamshell (CLAM), clamshell with the alignment of lower extremity (CLAM-AL). Surface EMG was used to measure hip abductor muscle activity and recruitment pattern from the five muscles: gluteus medius (Gmed), tensor fascia latae (TFL), gluteus maximus upper fiber (GmaxU), gluteus maximus lower fiber (GmaxL), and quadratus lumborum (QL). Results TFL EMG activity was significantly greater in AB than in AB-AL (p>.05). Gmed was significantly greater in CLAM than in CLAM-AL. Gmed, TFL, QL were significantly greater AB than CL. GmaxU, GmaxL were significantly greater CLAM than AB (p>.05). In the recruitment pattern, there was a difference between AB and CLAM (p<.05). However, In both exercises, there was no difference according to lower extremity alignment (p<.05). Conclusion It is recommended to perform the exercise in consideration of the type of exercise and the alignment of the lower extremity according to the aim of training.

Purpose The study aims to determine the effects of smartphone use on the trunk muscle activity while walking in young students. Methods Twenty-one subjects were asked to perform 10-meter walk test between upright walking without using a smartphone and conducting two-handed texting while walking with using a smartphone, and the electromyography activities of the trunk were quantified. When using a smartphone, cervical flexion angle was measured using the digital goniometer. Results First, middle trapezius, latissimus dorsi, and external abdominal oblique muscles decreased muscle activity when walking by texting to the smartphone than when walking without using the smartphone (p<0.05). The upper trapezius muscle activity increased when walking by sending text messages with a smartphone than when walking without using a smart phone (p< 0.05). The splenius capitis, lower trapezius, triceps, multifidus, and erector spinae increased muscle activity when walking while texting to the smartphone than when walking without using a smartphone (p >0.05). Second, when using a smartphone, the speed was slower than upright walking (p<0.05). Third, when using a smartphone, the bending angle of the neck increased more than when upright walking (p<0.05). Conclusion Our findings suggest that habitually using a smartphone while walking could be a potential risk for trunk musculoskeletal problems.

Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in ankle stability according to the height of the worn elastic ankle protector. Methods The subjects of this were 17 healthy subjects. After wearing a low-height elastic ankle protector and a high-elastic ankle protector, plantar pressure was measured and analyzed during the gait cycle. Results As a result of the study, there was no statistical significance in the six areas of the forefoot, and when walking with a high-elastic ankle protector, there was a statistically significant difference in R1, R3, and R4 among the four areas of the hind foot (p<0.05). Conclusion A high ankle protector can help stabilize the ankle joint when walking, and it can help normal gait by increasing the pressure on the sole of the foot.
