This paper examines the lexical meanings of the adjective 'good' in advertisement slogans. It shows how listeners can infer the meaning of 'good' and finally construct the ad hoc concept. With the relevance-theoretic approach, adjectives in advertisement slogans are generally a significant feature of describing the advertised items. However, the previous studies often focus on the issues related to the statistical frequency of adjective usages. Based on bestslogans.com websites, the slogans with the adjective 'good' were extracted and lexical and contextual information was analyzed to see its use and possible interpretation. The findings indicate that adjective 'good' shows extraordinary sensitivity to context, and a number of ad hoc concepts are identified. Results also show that inferring the meaning of an adjective needs thorough understanding of contextual information. (Konyang University · Chungnam National University)

This study aims to suggest new approaches for analyzing English words. So far most vocabulary research has been confined to analyzing word meaning itself and sense relations. New horizons of vocabulary research in this paper relate to the basic concept that words are very similar to individual humans. Based on that concept, this study presents five categories: individuality, relation, preference, idiomaticity, and originality. This paper hopes that new approaches used in this paper will enhance the possibility of easy acquisition of English vocabulary and with this method teachers will possess effective ways to teach English words in a classroom. Integrating engaging techniques into instruction becomes indispensable for cultivating the pillars of educational success. Along the line, this study presents a class model by incorporating metaverse and gamification tactics in learning to explore the educational potentials. Some contents embedded in a digital English textbook subsidiary to develop a gamified class model were derived. Three series of escape room games that utilized the hybridization of the gamification and metaverse features were proposed to boost students' learning experience that mostly revolves around memory retention theories. Given that the three gamified missions within metaverse were chiefly bounded to the contents of the digital textbook, this study hopes to offer a new avenue for end-users (i.e., English language learners) to get the most from their textbook learning experience. This study aims to analyze the continuity of the reading materials in elementary schools' 5th and 6th grade English textbooks based on the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. A corpus of reading materials was built from five English textbooks of each grade and it was analyzed using Coh-Metrix, an automated web-based corpus analysis tool. The Coh-Metrix indices used for this study can be classified into descriptive indices, syntactic complexity, and syntactic pattern density. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a statistically significant difference between textbooks in the number of sentences in comparison among publishers. There was no statistically significant difference among textbooks in syntactic complexity and syntactic pattern density. Second, it was found that the 5th-grade reading passage was syntactically more complex than the 6th-grade in some variables. Some suggestions for future textbook development were also discussed. It has been assumed that the inalienable possession meaning and the affectedness meaning of the possessor are crucial factors that license external possession constructions (EPCs) in Korean. Previous studies that deal with these conditions semantically or syntactically face theoretical or empirical problems. This paper argues that the acceptability or felicity of EPCs depends on the pragmatic salience of the possessor that establishes an inalienable part-of relation with the possessee in a given context. The pragmatic account is based on the actual EPC examples found in newspapers and blogs, showing that the affectedness condition is not necessary for EPCs. It is proposed that the possessor in an EPC is presented saliently or highlighted by shifting the possessee nominal to a predicate modifier that presupposes the existence of an inalienable possessor.
