Empty container management has been a problem of containerized trade due to the imbalance between export and import. Recently, a platform, called container-xchange.com, was launched to share empty containers between suppliers and consumers. The suppliers, who have empty containers not used in a certain period of times, register their empty containers with the specified rental period and the number of empty containers. Similarly, the consumers, who want to use empty containers, also register the period and the quantities of empty containers. Instead of searching counterparts in the platform, we consider the problem of finding a matching of suppliers and consumers such that the number of the matched pairs is maximized. This problem can be modeled as an interval scheduling problem in which suppliers and consumers correspond to machines and jobs, respectively which have their own intervals of availability. In addition, hierarchies are also assigned to both machines and jobs and the assignment of jobs to machines is possible only if their hierarchies are compatible. Due to the computational intractability of the problem, we propose a heuristic and the performance of the heuristic is verified through numerical experiments. We found that the heuristic provides the feasible solutions faster than the off-shelf branch-and-bound method. The degradation of the quality of the solutions compared with the optimal solutions was less than 5% on average.

With the increasing need for warehouses and distribution centers mainly due to growth of e-commerce many companies rent storage space from a third-party logistics (3PL) warehouses as needed instead. Warehouse rent represents the value of the rental storage space in terms of its physical, locational, and transactional attributes. Investigating how the warehouse rent is determined allows us to better understand the supply and demand relationship in the warehouse rental market. This allows warehouse landlords to better formulate their marketing strategies and warehouse renters to reduce search costs. However, warehouse rent has not received much attention in the previous literature except for a few studies relying on a conventional ordinary least square (OLS) regression model applied to the entire study region. The objective of this study is to investigate the spatial variation of warehouse rent and its determinants which can contribute to improved understanding of the warehouse rental market at the local level. Based on the warehouse rent data including both dry and cold warehouses in Seoul Metropolitan Area of South Korea, we used a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) that allows regression coefficients to vary over space. As a result we were able to discover how the effects of transactional, physical, and warehousing service related factors vary over space in the study region. The GWR model outperformed the conventional OLS model in terms of the explanatory power. The results from this study can provide meaningful information to many stakeholders in the warehouse rental market when making warehouse rental, buy/sell, and and investment decisions.

In line with the international trend, Korean companies are changing their strategy from maximizing short-term profit to increasing their ESG(Environment, Social, Governance) ability as the basis for sustainable development. In line with the international trend, Korean companies are changing their strategy from maximizing short-term profit to increasing their ESG ability as the basis for sustainable development. This paper empirically examines the perception of the dangerous goods TMS used by dangerous goods carriers by analyzing how the dangerous goods transport information system affects the improvement of ESG. We collected 185 surveys and tested hypotheses, using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that implementing dangerous goods TMS positively affect ESG of the firm. In addition, an idea to utilize the dangerous goods TMS for future ESG improvement is also proposed.

This study seeks to verify the relationship between logistics service quality and collaboration, which affects corporate performance, based on the findings of previous studies that connected logistics service quality of cold chain 3PL for food with corporate performance and on the assumption that logistics service quality is a key variable in predicting corporate performance. The objective of this study is to identify the effect of logistics service quality of cold chain 3PL for food on corporate performance of the shipper company. To this end, this study proposes the following research questions. First, does collaboration and logistics service quality of cold chain 3PL for food affect corporate performance of shipper companies? Second, does the logistics service quality of cold chain 3PL for food indirectly affect corporate performance of shipper companies through collaboration? Subjects of the survey were 300 employees of shipper companies in the cold chain 3PL for food industry, and survey data of 267 subjects were included in the final statistical analysis. Data analysis was performed using SPSS21 and AMOS21 statistics programs, and the measurement tool was a questionnaire consisting of questions related to logistics service quality, collaboration, and corporate performance. The key findings of these analyses are as follows. First, the logistics service quality of cold chain 3PL for food was found as having a positive effect on collaboration. Second, logistics service quality of cold chain 3PL for food was also found as having a positive effect on corporate performance. Third, collaboration was found as having a positive effect on corporate performance. Fourth, the direct channel of logistics service quality of cold chain 3PL for food on corporate performance and the indirect channel of logistics service quality on corporate performance through collaboration were found to be significant. For this reason, promoting collaboration and exploring ways to cooperate through smooth communication and understanding between cold chain 3PL for food and shipper companies in ways that can benefit both parties seem essential in improving corporate performance of shipper companies.

Due to the recent political and economic situation, uncertainty in the shipping market is increasing, and various predictive studies are being conducted to resolve it. This study conducted predictions of US West Coast(USWC) Freight Index in Shanghai Containerized Freight Index(SCFI) using System Dynamics. In the study, variables were selected by synthesizing previous studies and in-depth interviews with experts. As for demand factors, import volume of three ports, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Oakland, corresponding to the western port of the USA, container volume of Shanghai, and bunker price were selected. And as supply factors, the ship's space and Idling ship volumes were selected. The data used for the variable are monthly data from January 2016 to December 2020. MAPE analysis used in error analysis was used to verify the accuracy of the prediction model. As a result of verifying SCFI's USWC route index prediction simulation, it was verified with a very reasonable prediction model with a training interval of 22.9%. As a result of predicting future SCFI's USWC using the prediction model constructed in this study, it was found that it slightly increased to 3093.47 in 2022 and 3130.79 in 2023.

Global companies need to increase their competitiveness through efficient management and rapid decision-making of limited internal resources. Supply chain management(SCM) expands from raw material procurement to final customers. Due to the limitations of corporate resources and capital, accuracy of demand forecasting is essential to improve competitiveness. This study tested the artificial neural network(ANN) model to use it as a more improved demand prediction model required by material suppliers in the semiconductor industry. The predictive results of artificial neural network models and other traditional time series models such as Moving Average, Exponential Smoothing including Holt-Winter's model, and ARIMA were compared with actual sales data. Based on this, the accuracy of the artificial neural network model according to the demand pattern of the semiconductor component industry was evaluated. The artificial neural network model predicted the highest average accuracy rate among demand prediction models and it can be expected to improve overall demand forecast accuracy which is able to contribute actual facing problem at similar supply chains. Demand forecasting is a beginning of sales and supply planning in supply chain management. This study is expected to provide one of cases at the demand forecast research due to lack of domestic research papers. It will also provide practical guidelines of real-world problem at various companies which was used actual data from semiconductor industry.
