1Sewing-enabled electric button for smart fabric

A new button-shaped electrical device was developed for a smart fabric. This electric button can be sewn anywhere on the garment, similar to a traditional button fastener. t not only performs a decorative function but also makes the fabric suitable for use in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. It has metallic through-holes such that it can be fastened onto a fabric by conductive sewing threads. When threaded through metallic holes, the button can communicate with the external device by transmitting and receiving data. In addition, it adds specific functions by stacking a detachable application layer on the base layer. It is robust to frequent washing, and thus has excellent repeatability for use as an IoT device. The feasibility of the electric button was successfully demonstrated by its ability to identify the physical activities of walking and running, monitoring ambient temperature, and turning on LED lights.

2Nanostructured Ni-Mn double hydroxide for high capacitance supercapacitor application

Recently, transition-metal-based hydroxide materials have attracted significant attention in various electrochemical applications owing to their low cost, high stability, and versatility in composition and morphology. Among these applications, transition-metal-based hydroxides have exhibited significant potential in supercapacitors owing to their multiple redox states that can considerably enhance the supercapacitance performance. In this study, nanostructured Ni-Mn double hydroxide is directly grown on a conductive substrate using an electrodeposition method. Ni-Mn double hydroxide exhibits excellent electrochemical charge-storage properties in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, such as a specific capacitance of 1364 Fg-1 at a current density of 1 mAcm-2 and a capacitance retention of 94% over 3000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 10 mAcm-2. The present work demonstrates a scalable, time-saving, and cost-effective approach for the preparation of Ni-Mn double hydroxide with potential application in high-charge-storage kinetics, which can also be extended for other transition-metal-based double hydroxides.

In this study, we propose a machine vision system with a high object recognition rate. By utilizing a multiple-exposure image sensing technique, the proposed deep learning-based machine vision system can cover a wide light intensity range without further learning processes on the various light intensity range. If the proposed machine vision system fails to recognize object features, the system operates in a multiple-exposure sensing mode and detects the target object that is blocked in the near dark or bright region. Furthermore, shortand long-exposure images from the multiple-exposure sensing mode are synthesized to obtain accurate object feature information. That results in the generation of a wide dynamic range of image information. Even with the object recognition resources for the deep learning process with a light intensity range of only 23 dB, the prototype machine vision system with the multiple-exposure imaging method demonstrated an object recognition performance with a light intensity range of up to 96 dB.

In this paper, we propose a high-speed, low-power complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) binary image sensor featuring a gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector based on a double-tail comparator. The GBT photodetector forms a structure in which the floating gate (n+ polysilicon) and body of the PMOSFET are tied, and amplifies the photocurrent generated by incident light. The double-tail comparator compares the output signal of a pixel against a reference voltage and returns a binary signal, and it exhibits improved power consumption and processing speed compared with those of a conventional two-stage comparator. The proposed sensor has the advantages of a high signal processing speed and low power consumption. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor was designed and fabricated using a standard 0.18 μm CMOS process.

In this paper, a folding sensor based on capacitance is proposed. The sensor was developed to sense the length and angle data for the milli-scale actuators without causing any interference to the actuating joints. For the sensing and testing the robotic joint with reducing the cost and complexity aspects of manufacturing, a simple composition was adopted. The sensor comprises a pair of copper tapes, papers, and wires. The complete sensing unit is constructed by bonding the tapes with the papers and soldering the wire to the copper parts. For accuracy, a teensy 4.0 board, which has a 12-bit ADC resolution, is employed. Furthermore, the sensed analog data is not translated into the unit of capacitance for accuracy; however, it is filtered using a low-pass filter and subsequently, a Butter-worth filter. The data obtained demonstrate a periodic waveform, which implies that the data are in good agreement with the hypothesis set prior to the experiments. Compared to other milli-scale sensors, this could be a better option for sensing the length and angle data for milli-scale actuators.

In this study, pure and Co3O4/CoFe2O4-loaded Indium oxide (In2O3) nanofibers were synthesized by the electrospinning of an Indium/Polyvinylpyrrolidone precursor solution containing cobalt and iron bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks and subsequent heat treatment. The ethanol, toluene, p-xylene, benzene, carbon monodxide, and hydrogen gas sensing characteristics of the solution were measured at 250-400 ℃. 0.5 at%-Co3O4/CoFe2O4-loaded In2O3 nanofibers exhibited extreme response (resistance ratio - 1) to 5 ppm of ethanol (210.5) at 250 ℃ and excellent selectivity over the interfering gases. In contrast, pure In2O3 nanofibers exhibited relatively low responses to all the analyte gases and low selectivity above 250-400 ℃. The superior response and selectivity toward ethanol is explained by the catalytic roles of Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 in gas sensing reaction and the electronic sensitization induced by the formation of p (Co3O4/CoFe2O4)-n (In2O3) junctions.

In this study, we utilized the duty factor of the transition frequency modulation (TFM) for the illumination control of the light emitting diode (LED) light in visible light communication (VLC). The average optical power is linearly proportional to the duty factor in TFM waveforms. We used the transition frequencies of Na=5 and Nb=1 for the high and the low bits, respectively, of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data in the VLC transmitter. A resistor and capacitor high-pass filter (HPF) was used in the VLC receiver to eliminate the 120 Hz optical noise from adjacent lighting lamps and the spikes at the HPF output were used to recover NRZ data from the TFM waveform. In experiments, the illumination of the LED light was controlled in the range of 25-90% of the constant-wave optical power by changing the duty factor of the TFM waveforms.

Detection and localization of partial discharge are considered critical techniques for estimating the lifetimes of power cables. High-frequency current transformers (HFCTs) are commonly used for the detection of partial discharge in high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) power cables; however, their applicability is compromised by the limitations of the installation locations. HFCTs are typically installed in cable terminals or insulation joint boxes because HVACs induce strong time-varying magnetic fields around the cables, saturating the ferromagnetic materials in the HFCTs. Therefore, partial discharges near the installation locations can be detected. In this study, the feasibility of partial discharge detection using a HFCT was investigated for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. We demonstrated that the HFCT could be installed at any location in the HVDC power cable to monitor partial discharge along the entire cable length. Furthermore, we showed that the HFCT could detect the location of partial discharge with high accuracy.

In this study, an automated culture media replacement system was developed to analyze changes in the contraction characteristics of cardiomyocytes according to the state of the culture media. For the long-term storage of culture media, a Peltier refrigerator with a temperature of 5 to 8℃ was provided and a pH of 7.4 was maintained. The cell culture media of the cardiomyocytes was continuously replaced using interlocking pumps at a flow rate of 0.83 μl/h. The cardiomyocytes in which the culture media was replaced automatically demonstrated lower heartbeats per minute compared to samples in which there was no replacement. However, these cardiomyocytes moved more uniformly and produced greater displacement in one heartbeat cycle. It was observed that the sarcomere length of the cardiomyocytes increased due to the automated culture media replacement system. These cardiomyocytes were found to demonstrate better maturation compared to the control group. The maturation of cardiomyocytes was verified through staining images. The proposed automated culture media replacement system generates a uniform heart rate and improvements in contraction force. Based on the study, patient-specific drug toxicity assessments can be conducted using differentiated cardiomyocytes in induced pluripotent stem cells.

In this study, the sensitivity of an active pixel sensor (APS) was adjusted by employing a gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector with a transfer gate. A GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector can amplify the photocurrent generated by light. Consequently, APSs that incorporate GBT PMOSFET-type photodetectors are more sensitive than those APSs that are based on p-n junctions. In this study, a transfer gate was added to the conventional GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector. Such a photodetector can adjust the sensitivity of the APS by controlling the amount of charge transmitted from the drain to the floating diffusion node according to the voltage of the transfer gate. The results obtained from conducted simulations and measurements corroborate that, the sensitivity of an APS, which incorporates a GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector with a built-in transfer gate, can be adjusted according to the voltage of the transfer gate. Furthermore, the chip was fabricated by employing the standard 0.35 μm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, and the variable sensitivity of the APS was thereby experimentally verified.
