This study aimed at measuring Korean and Russian ability of Koryoin-school-aged(10-12) bilingual children based on lexical meaning (superordinate comprehension, hypernym expression) and grammar (grammatical error judgement, error correction) and comparing their scores with those of Korean or Russian monolingual children. As results, overall test scores surpass in Russian which is their home language, in particular in lexical meaning, but Korean test scores a little surpass in grammar. However, the scores are significantly lower than those of monolingual children, which shows that both L1 attrition and weak L2 acquisition took place in Koryoin children in Korea. The correlation analysis between Russian and Korean ability revealed negative correlations between Korean hypernym expression and Russian superordinate comprehension, and between Korean grammar error correction and Russian superordinate comprehension. The study found that length of residence and age did not always correlate with L1 attrition and L2 development, and other factors were intervened besides them. (Kyunghee University)

The present study suggests ways to improve faculty management at the King Sejong Institute through an analysis of the data of the past three years. The analysis reveals the following: 1) the total number of Korean teachers has increased over the past three years; 2) the number of dispatch teachers has also increased, especially at the lowest level, and 3) the number of locally hired teachers also increased; however, the ratio of the experienced teachers and the teachers holding Korean language teachers' certificates remained largely unchanged. In the light of this analysis, this study proposes the following as ways to improve faculty management at the King Sejong Institute: 1) a clear division of responsibilities should be provided through job analysis, 2) the current faculty rank system should be subdivided and teacher education should be redesigned in accordance to the system, and 3) it is necessary to strengthen teacher education for locally hired teachers. The objective of this research is to investigate the intercultural sensitivity and the cultural adaptation of foreign university students in Korea through statistical analysis of questionary survey. The analysis of survey's responses produced the following findings. First, religion and foreign language learning experience had an effect on the intercultural sensitivity but nationality and gender affected the cultural adaptation. Vietnam students' cultural adaptation was lower than the other and female had experience culture shock less than male but male's emotional sense of stability was higher than female's. In addition, foreign language learning experience affected the culture shock. Secondly, there was a weak correlation the intercultural sensitivity between the cultural adaptation. There was a definite correlation the intercultural sensitivity between the culture shock and also the cultural adaptation between the embracing other cultures. Lastly, the intercultural sensitivity contributed to the cultural adaptation. As the intercultural sensitivity increased, so did the cultural adaptation. The embracing other cultures had an effect on the cultural adaptation and the worries about loss of own culture from an exchange of culture as inversely related to the cultural adaptation. 한국어 대화에서 운율, 그중에서도 경계 억양은 상대방에 대한 화자의 감정과 태도를 표현하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 그러나 이러한 중요성에도 불구하고 한국어어미와 경계 억양의 연관성에 대한 연구가 미흡했다. 이에 이 연구에서 발화 음성 자료의 경계 억양을 음향학적으로 분석하여 -거든의 화용적 의미를 질적, 양적 연구로 살펴보았다. 분석 결과 대화에서 -거든(H%)은 청자에 대한 화자의 비동의와 유대 관계의 단절 및 체면 위협 행위(Brown & Levinson, 1987)를 나타내지만 -거든(L%)은 대화에서 이러한 부정적인 효과를 줄이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 통계 분석 결과 응답에서 사용된 -거든이 경계 억양에 따라 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.(p < .001) 구체적으로 살펴보면 대화에서의 상대방의 의견, 의도, 예상에 대한 화자의 '-거든 일치 응답'(L%)과 '-거든 불일치 응답'(H%) 그리고 '-거든 완화된 불일치 응답'(L%)이다. 이 연구로 한국어에 대한 이해를 향상시키고 한국어 학습자를 위한 한국어 억양 교육에 도움이 되기를 기대한다. Despite prosody, especially for boundary tones, playing a crucial role in expressing ones' emotions and attitudes towards the interlocutor in Korean conversation, the association between Korean endings and boundary tones has not been fully identified. Therefore, this study seeks to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the pragmatic meanings of the Korean ending -ketun by performing an acoustic analysis of its boundary tones using a speech dataset. The results show that, on one hand, -ketun with H% brings about face-threatening acts (Brown & Levinson, 1987), showing speakers' disagreement with and disaffiliation from listeners; on the other hand, -ketun with L% diminishes negative effects in conversations. Furthermore, -ketun responses differ significantly according to boundary tones (p < .001): (1) -ketun agreement response (L%); (2) -ketun disagreement response (H%) ; and (3) -ketun mitigated disagreement response (L%) to interlocutors' opinions, intentions, or expectations in conversations. This study focuses on the Korean 'X적' to analyze and explore the corresponding categories in Chinese and the causes of the Korean-Chinese Correspondence. The research results are as follows.
1. For Type [A1]: The 'X' in 'X적' is more difficult to express the vocabulary of “characteristics, attributes”, which corresponds to 'X nature'. On the other hand, if it is easier to express the vocabulary of “characteristics, attributes”, it corresponds to 'XØ'. Part of the type corresponds to 'with X' or 'of X'.
2. For type [A2]: 'X적' generally corresponds to 'like X', and usually does not correspond to 'XØ' or 'of X'.
3. For type [B]: 'X적' corresponds to 'XØ' or 'of X', if X and the rear N are in the “direction” relationship, it corresponds to 'above X'.
4. For type [C]: 'X적' mostly corresponds to 'XØ', and sometimes corresponds to 'of X'.
5. Except for [A2], the corresponding categories of [A1][B][C] can be 'XØ' and 'of X'. The corresponding category of 'XØ' accounts for 61.2% of the total, while that of 'of X' accounts for 19.3% of the total.
6. The corresponding situations of 1)-5) above are related to the following four elements: The first element is the differences in the meanings and functions of '-적' and '-的'; the second element is the usage of structure in Chinese; the third element is whether 'X' is independent; the last element is associated with the usage habit of 'N of X'. The purpose of this study is to observe and describe the usage patterns of machine translation that appear in the Korean writing habits of undergraduate Chinese students, as well as to set the starting point for discussion on the machine translation literacy. In this study, four Chinese students in the third and fourth grades of Korean universities were required to carry out Korean writing tasks utilizing machine translation, and the process was recorded and transferred on a minute-by-minute basis in order to analyze the patterns of translation and post-editing. The tendency of participants to modify machine translation results was largely classified into vocabulary-level corrections and sentence-reorganization modifications. In their own way, learners were carrying out modifications to the translation results, one of the components of machine translation literacy, and some examples of production and modification of translation-friendly text were observed. This study aims to show how to formate and negotiate their own identity based on the current state of language use and educational experience of the Korean-Chinese. For academic purposes, based on Bakhtin's dialogism that devotes their Korean language learning and usage experience to Chinese Korean-Chinese college students who are studying and living in Korea for academic purposes, language learning is fundamentally social, starting from the point of view of the formation of identity and negotiation. Most of the participants in the study had a background of bilingualism, and in the process of completing their studies in Korea, they felt the difference between Korean and Chinese. It is a process that changes gradually. Therefore, in order to find out about the process, this study attempts to visualize the process of negotiation and formation by looking at the process of becoming ideological which constitutes participants 'inner-persuasive discourse' through the selective assimilation from their discourse. The purpose of this study is to look into the realization aspects of complaint speech acts among Koreans in their 20s and 30s. Through DCT, utterances of 200 Koreans were collected to analyze complaint strategies and expressions in each given complaint situation. Complaint situations were categorized into four types according to the object of complaint, aggressiveness of interlocutor's utterance, and intimacy between speaker and listener. Complaint strategies were analyzed through multiple response analysis, and complaint expressions were monitored for respective frequency. As results of analyzing complaint strategies by each situation type, it was found that Koreans tended to complain directly and expressively to unfamiliar interlocutors' aggressive utterances (Type A). In cases of unfamiliar interlocutors' non-aggressive utterances (Type B), Koreans usually tried to explain the problem and request for a solution. When a familiar interlocutor made a non-aggressive utterance (Type C), Koreans tended to directly complain about such behavior and provide instructions to the listener. When a familiar interlocutor complained about a non-interlocutors (Type D), Koreans used the strategy of sympathizing. In employing complaint strategies, the gender and age group factors were mostly insignificant. However, males tended to prefer S8(instructing) whereas S9(questioning) and S11(explaining the context) were more popular among females. Unrealization of complaint speech acts was more frequent in conversations with unfamiliar interlocutors than familiar ones. In strongly upsetting complaint situations, many chose to report directly to the police rather than directly deal with an unfamiliar speaker. Most frequently used expressions in complaint speech act situation types were those related to strategies. In Type A, expressions pointing out the listeners' fault (-지(요), -잖아(요)) or emphasizing the speakers intention (-(으)세요, -(으)ㄹ게요) were commonly employed, whereas expressions of request (-아/어 주세요, 저기요) were more frequent in Type B. In Type C, along with expressions pointing out the listeners' fault (-잖아(요)), expressions to ask for a solution (어떡해) or conventional complaint expressions (뭐야, 장난해) were repeatedly observed. In Type C, expressions of sympathy (그러게, 그치, 나도) were often used. Unlike existing literature, this study picked out the contexts where complaint speech acts are likely to be realized, and went on to analyze the strategies according to each context and extract native Korean speakers' commonly used expressions. The study will serve as a baseline data in teaching complaint speech acts and expressions in actual fields of Korean education. (Soongsil University)

The study investigated what variables affected more on Korean raters` production and fluency judgement to the Korean speakings of the advanced foreign learners. Nine professional Korean raters assessed sixty Korean learners` oral performance. The results are as follows: (1) fluency judgement for the Korean speaking follows the cross-linguistic trends, (2) the principal variables in judging L2 fluency include speech rate, F0 range, and pause frequency, (3) mean length of runs (number of syllables) - representing how many words the subjects express within the given time - comparatively lower effect in judging the fluency. The study also found that the wide range of F0 causes the higher scores of the fluency marks. The result could support the evidence that F0 - exerting how the subjects express the active intonation - is one of the important production and fluency cues, regardless of the spectrum structure of the target language. The result implies that Korean speaking education should focus more on the active intonation. The purpose of this study is to reveal the intonations of Chinese learners, when they are using the confirmative interrogative sentences of Korean. But the previous studies, there are a lot of problems. Such as they tried to use Chinese`s general interrogative sentence - the `?` interrogative sentence to explain the Korean confirmative interrogative sentences - the `-지요` interrogative sentences. But the important thing is the `?` interrogative sentence in China is not use as confirmative interrogative sentences. That is, they were not based on the same grammatical concepts and functions to compare the differences between Korean and Chinese`s confirmative interrogative sentence. So they could not get a satisfactory result when comparing Korean and Chinese`s intonation. And another problem is they considered the Chinese tone has affected the intonation of Korean`s confirmative interrogative sentence but did not researched it in depth.
In this study, I tried to explain the rationality of choosing `-지요` interrogative sentence and ` ` interrogative sentence. And then refer to previous studies and materials to write Korean & Chinese experimental materials. After that, interviewed and tested 110 respondents, used praat6023 to analyze experimental data. According to actual condition to reveal the intonations of Chinese learners, when they are using the confirmative interrogative sentences of Korean. And also I tried experimented to prove that, intonation will be affected by the Chinese tone characteristics, syllable changes rules, light tone rules and other reasons, when Chinese learners are using the confirmative interrogative sentences of Korean. This study analyzed syntactic development (Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency; CAF) of L2 Korean learners in a natural learning context. Twenty-one L2 Korean learners recalled the stories of a short animated video through speaking and writing. Their responses were analyzed for a series of CAF measures and the learners` cognitive, psychological, and social variables were investigated according to time periods. The results showed that (i) L2 Korean learner groups, categorized by time of stay, showed significant differences in spoken and written complexity, and spoken fluency. (ii) the correlation between spoken and written complexity as well as the spoken and written accuracy were significant, and the spoken and written fluency were almost at the significant level. (iii) The One-way ANOVA analysis showed that learners group with the shortest period had significantly higher level of anxiety. The study reports heartening results that L2 Korean learners who embarked in self-learning in a natural learning context also made significant syntactic development. (Kyunghee University)

This paper aims to analyze the phonological phenomena that occurred on the acquisition of a Korean monophthong system of Myanmar learners. It is mainly examined in terms of the internal representation of vowels within the theoretical framework of the Element Theory.
When Korean monophthong input is given, Myanmar learners reanalyze and adjust it based on the internal representation existing in the Myanmar vowel system, or on that of the target Korean. And this is pronounced by output. Positive and negative transitions appear in this process.
The commonality of the internal structures of /i, a, u, o, e/ explains the positive transfer of those vowels by Myanmar speakers of Korean. On the other hand, substitution errors of [ε] for /e/, [?] for /o/, and [u] for /i/ by negative transfer are found in Myanmar learners` pronunciation derived from adapting internal representation of Myanmar vowel to Korean. The purpose of the present study is to identify the components of reading anxiety of advanced students learning Korean as a second language and examine the relationship between the reading anxiety and their academic performances in college. A total of 40 international students enrolled in a university in Korea participated in the questionnaire-based survey (Saito, Horwitz, & Garza, 1999). The responses were analyzed by a range of principal component factor analyses and correlation analyses. The results found five major components comprising the reading anxiety in relation to comprehension, foreign language, vocabulary, culture, and negative perceptions toward reading. The correlation analysis found that the first factor, i.e., comprehension, have significant negative correlation with their academic performances. Other factors did not show significant relationships with the academic performances. The results of the study, thus, describe that the constructs of reading anxiety is multifaced in nature and some of them may have significant impact to students` academic performances in college. This study aims to systematically examine the effects of reading strategy instruction in Korean reading education. To accomplish this goal, a total of 38 effect sizes were produced from 23 related studies and meta-analyzed. The major implications of this research are as follows: First, the overall effect size was .739. This is a medium effect size and implies that the treated group showed an improvement bigger than the control group by 28.52 percentile. Second, the effect size of cognitive strategy teaching (ES=.854) was greater than that of meta-cognitive strategy teaching (ES=.751). Third, the analysis of the moderator effects revealed that none of the five variables (language group, proficiency, number of students, number of lessons, and learning purpose) had a statistically significant impact on the result. Detailed findings and pedagogical suggestions are also discussed. (Dong-A University)

This study aims to investigate the cognition and practical use of foreign language in the Korean classroom. In order to examine the use of foreign language in various contexts, I classified the Korean teachers according to the linguistic backgrounds and the teaching locations. For the multi-faceted and in-depth study, an interview analysis of eight Korean teachers(2 each domestic native, overseas native, domestic non-native and overseas non-native teachers) and a survey of 117 Korean teachers were conducted.
Through the interview analysis, we found some common ideas about using foreign language in the classroom. What should be emphasized here is that the use of the foreign language by the teachers surveyed is not determined by external factors but the active decision of the teacher through teacher cognition.
In addition, the results of the survey showed that the rate of using foreign language in the overseas classrooms, and beginning levels are significantly higher than that of domestics and intermediate and above. And the analysis of the situations in which the foreign language is actually used and that is considered effective to use is conducted but still needs to be further analysed. The purpose of this study is to suggest `Speech focused on Cross-examination` model to Korean Language Learners for Academic Purpose in order to enhance their interactive skills in debates. Although Debate curriculum has been acknowledged as a method to increase Korean Language Learners` college scholastic abilities comprehensively, students find it quite burdensome due to some difficulties in interactive activities such as inquiry and rebuttal. `Speech Focused on Cross-examination` model is devised from `Extemporaneous Speaking`, a debate training method designed for enhancing interactive skills with questioning and answering. `Extemporaneous Speaking` is an event of annual debating tournament held both in high school and university levels in the US. This model will be an effective method for foreign students to overcome difficulties of interaction during debate class and will encourage students to achieve higher college scholastic ability. So as to verify the efficiency of `Speech focused on Cross-examination` model, academic experiment project was proceeded during a semester. Understanding research trends is a good way to keep up with research needs. Most of the researches on research trends in the area of Korean pronunciation education tend to have been conducted in a traditional way depending on the researcher`s subjective criteria. A network approach makes it possible to uncover recent trends in an objective way with a new perspective based on the network relations by analyzing words appearing in the titles of scholarly articles. To uncover the recent trends in the area of Korean pronunciation education research, 357 articles on Korean pronunciation education research were collected and 2,778 keywords were extracted for a frequency analysis and a co-word analysis. Their relationships were then analyzed by the algorithms of Pathfinder Networks (PFNets) and Parallel Nearest Neighbor Clustering (PNNC), the results were visualized by NodeXL. The patterns and clusters on the network provided a broad understanding of how research areas have evolved over time and emerging research areas. (Seoul National University)

Bilingual Research 67, 285-307. The purpose of this study is to acoustically analyze 8 Korean monophthongs produced by the 20 Vietnamese novice learners of Korean and the 20 native speakers of Korean and to compare their pronunciations. The participants were all female speakers. Among many acoustic features of vowels, we here present the first formants(F1) and the second formants(F2), by which we can assume the place of articulation of the vowels produced.
The result shows that almost all vowels produced by the Vietnamese learners are significantly different in their F1 and F2 to those produced by the native speakers of Korean. Particularly in case of the back vowels, / / and / /, the differences between the Vietnamese learners and the native speakers of Korean can lead to confusion, which means it has to be the first priority when teaching vowel pronunciation of Korean to teach how to pronounce those two vowels in a precise way.
