본고는 韓·中·日 삼국 고전문학에 나타난 여성 서사의 색채 가운데 홍색(紅色), 즉 붉은색에 주목하여 그 의미와 기능을 고찰하고자 하였다. 붉은색은 단순한 시각적 효과를 넘어, 여성의 몸과 욕망, 윤리와 저항을 동시에 상징하는 복합적 기호로 작용하고 있었다. 붉은색은 아름답고 매혹적인 여성, 동시에 정숙한 아내·열녀·효부의 이미지를 장식함으로써 가부장적 사회가 상정한 ‘이상적 여성성’을 시각화하고, 그에 부합하는 여성 정체성을 구현하는 색채였지만, 한편 금기와 일탈, 분노와 광기의 정서를 드러내며 기존 질서의 모순을 폭로하고 그 정당성을 근원에서 흔드는 파열과 전복의 색으로도 기능하였다. 그리고 이러한 의미들은 분리된 범주가 아니라 한 인물, 한 장면의 서사적 결을 따라 교차하고 번져가며, 여성을 아름다움의 대상이자 도덕의 담지자(擔持者)이면서 동시에 규범의 경계를 넘나드는 존재, 조용한 저항의 주체로 역동적이고 다층적으로 형상화하였다. 결국 붉은색은 韓·中·日 삼국 고전문학 속 여성 세계를 비추는 가장 뜨겁고도 섬세한 빛으로서, 문학과 예술, 미학과 윤리가 교차하는 지점을 밝히며, 고대 여성 서사의 심장부(心臟部)를 조용히, 그러나 강렬하게 관통하는 색채였다.
This paper, among different color symbols that reflect female narratives, particularly focuses on the color red and examines its meanings in classical East Asian literature. Beyond its conventional role as an artistic element creating visual spectacles, the color red gradually becomes a multifaceted symbol representing a female character’s physical self, desire, internalized ethics, and resistance. It is used to portray the stereotypical images of idealized femininity under patriarchy - a beautiful and attractive woman, a virtuous wife, a faithful woman, and a daughter-in-law with filial piety - and a female identity corresponding to such stereotypes. Yet, it is also a color of rupture and overthrow due to its frequent usage in situations involving a female character’s challenge to taboo, act of deviation, expression of anger, and loss of sanity, which lead to her attempts to debunk contradictions of patriarchal society and erode the legitimacy of the system. These meanings are not disconnected from each other; when depicting a character or a scene, they all contribute to a dynamic and multilayered representation of a female character as one who embodies beauty, bears morality, defies problematic social norms, and initiates silent resistance. Therefore, the color red, as a blazing yet delicate ray that casts light upon the spheres of female characters in East Asian classical literature, reveals the intersections of literature and the arts, aesthetics and ethics, and mildly yet vividly depicts the vibrant core of female narratives in such classical literature.
