본 논문은 디지털 기술 환경과 이미지 과잉 시대를 배경으로, 인공지능(AI)과 NFT 기술이 예술의 가치 체계에 미치는 영향을 고찰하고, 이 가운데 회화가 예술적, 경제적 가치를 지속적으로 유지할 수 있는지를 탐구한다. 디지털 기술은 이미지의 창작과 유통을 자동화하며, 예술의 고유성, 작가성, 물질성과 같은 전통적 가치 기준에 도전하고 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 데이비드 조슬릿의 ‘국제 통화로서의 예술 작품’과 ‘창발적 이미지’, 히토 슈타이얼의 ‘빈곤한 이미지’ 개념을 이론적 틀로 삼아, 디지털 환경 속에서 회화의 위치를 재조명하였다. AI 이미지 생성 기술(CNN, GAN)과 NFT 시스템의 작동 원리를 기술적으로 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 데미안 허스트의 ⟪통화 (The Currency)⟫와 ⟪아름다운 그림들 (The Beautiful Paintings)⟫ 프로젝트를 사례로 분석하였다. 두 프로젝트는 디지털 이미지와 회화의 시장적 가치 평가 구조를 바탕으로 회화의 가치를 실험적으로 보여주는 작업으로 기능하였으며, 회화의 물질성, 감각성, 작가성이 디지털 이미지보다 높은 신뢰와 선호를 받았다는 점에서 회화의 지속적 가치를 실증적으로 뒷받침하였다. 이러한 논의를 통해 본 논문은 디지털 예술 환경에서 회화가 직면한 위협과 변화를 고찰하고, 회화의 감각적 실재성과 시장적 가치를 통해 그 지속 가능성을 조명한다. 나아가 향후 연구에서는 기술과 회화의 융합 가능성, 그리고 기술이 작가성과 감상 방식에 미치는 영향에 대한 보다 심층적인 탐색이 요구된다.

This study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and NFT technologies on the value system of art, against the backdrop of the digital technology environment and the era of image saturation. Digital technologies have automated the production and distribution of images, challenging traditional standards of artistic value such as originality, authorship, and materiality. Accordingly, this study reexamines the position of painting in the digital context by adopting David Joselit's concepts of the ‘global currency of art’ and ‘emergent image,’ along with Hito Steyerl’s notion of the ‘poor image’ as its theoretical framework. The research also includes a technical analysis of AI image generation technologies (CNN, GAN) and the operating mechanisms of NFT systems, which is followed by a case study of Damien Hirst’s ⟪The Currency⟫ and ⟪The Beautiful Paintings⟫ projects. These two projects function as experimental works that demonstrate the structure of value assessment between digital images and painting. They provide empirical support for the enduring value of painting, as materiality, sensory engagement, and authorship were more strongly favored and trusted by collectors than their digital counterparts. Through these discussions, this paper examines the challenges and transformations that painting faces in the digital art environment, highlighting its sustainability through sensory reality and market value. Furthermore, future research should explore in greater depth the potential for convergence between technology and painting, as well as the impact of technology on artistic authorship and modes of appreciation.
