본 연구의 목적은 포스트 소비에트 러시아에서 블라디미르 나보코프가 하나의 사회, 문화적 아이콘으로 자리매김하는 과정, 즉 나보코프 “현상”의 형성과정에서의 중요한 계기와 의미들을 문화-사회학적인 시야에서 해명하는 데 두었다. 이질적인 두 문화권에서 두 개의 언어로 탁월한 문학적 성취와 함께 상업적인 성공까지 거둔 경력만으로도 나보코프는 세계 문학사에 신화적 존재가 될 만한 조건을 이미 갖추고 있다. 실제로 페레스트로이카를 기점으로 해금된 나보코프는 독자들의 관심과 사랑을 놓고 파스테르낙을 비롯한 동시대 작가들과 벌인 경쟁에서 압도적인 우위를 차지했다. 문제는 작가의 삶을 둘러싼 역사적 정치적 상황의 극심한 변화와 러시아에서 영어로 창작 언어를 바꾸는 과정에서 발생한 단절로 인해 그의 작품을 평가하고 수용하는 기준에 커다란 혼란이 발생했다는 점이다. 오늘날 러시아에서 나보코프와 그의 문학에 대해 찬양과 비난, 러시아 문학 전통을 계승 발전시킨 위대한 "러시아 작가"와 서구 상업주의에 물든 부도덕하고 "비러시아적인" 작가라는 극단적으로 상반된 반응과 평가가 나오게 된 것도 여기에 기인한다. 즉, 20세기 초와 말 두 번에 걸친 전면적인 과거 부정과 급진적인 체제 전환으로 인해 러시아 사회와 문화가 겪은 대혼란과 가치 전도 현상이 나보코프와 그의 작품에 대한 위와 같은 상반된 평가와 수용 양상에 큰 영향을 미친 것이다. 이 연구에서 우리가 나보코프와 그의 문학 유산을 철저하게 특정한 역사적 맥락 속에 놓인 하나의 "현상"으로 이해하고 사회 문화적인 컨텍스트와의 유기적인 관련 속에서 조명하는 것도 바로 이 때문이며 이러한 시도는 나보코프라는 개인-작가에 대한 새로운 차원의 이해와 더불어 러시아 문학과 현대 러시아 사회 문화에 대한 총체적인 이해를 가능하게 해 줄 것으로 기대한다.

This study aims to explain the important moments and its meanings in the formation of the "Phenomenon Nabokov" from cultural-social perspective. Vladimir Nabokov deserves to be called as a legendary writer. He won enormous commercial success and outstanding literary achievements in two distinct cultures with two different languages. In 1990s, years after Perestroika, Nabokov’s works acquired huge attention and love from readers of “New”Russia, and overwhelmed “forbidden” contemporary writers. However, the cultural gap that occurred in the process of moving from Russian to English caused confusion in the evaluation (appraisal) of his works. The inversion of truth, the drastic transformation due to two radical transitions in the 20th century, and the absolute denial of“Past”in Russia caused contradictory assessment on Nabokov’s artistic world. In this research, Nabokov and his literal heritage(legacy) are studied in a historical and socio-cultural context of the "Phenomenon". With the new level of understanding on Nabokov, we expect to increase the level of understanding on modern(Post-Soviet) Russian literature and Russian culture society from a holistic point of view.
