이 연구는 경찰신뢰에 대한 선행연구의 다수준적 접근을 확장하여 개인적인 요인과 국가수준의 요인들을 동시에 고려하는 모델을 설정하고, 다양한 국가의 시민들을 설문한 자료의 분석을 통해 실증적으로 검증하고자 수행되었다. 특히, 경찰신뢰에 대한 도구적 시각과 표현적 시각을 모두 고려하였다. 즉 개인적 수준의 변수로써 범죄피해의 직ㆍ간접적 경험을 경찰신뢰의 영향요인으로 포함하고, 국가적 수준의 변수로 민주주의 정도와 공공서비스의 제공 정도 및 인권존중의 정도를 취약국가지수(Fragile States Index) 자료를 활용하여 추가적인 분석을 수행함으로써 선행연구에 진일보한 연구이다. 연구결과 연령과 사회계층이 높고, 여성이며, 직접범죄피해경험이 없을수록 경찰을 더 신뢰하는 것으로 나타났다. 동시에 이 연구에서 투입된 국가수준의 변수들 중에서는 공공서비스 제공의 악화 정도가 심한 지역에 속하는 개인일수록 경찰을 더 신뢰하지 못한다는 결과가 나타났다. 이 연구는 경찰신뢰에 영향을 미치는 요인을 검증하고자 하는 데 있어 개인수준의 변수만을 투입하여 검증한 것이 아닌, 국가수준의 변수까지 모델에 투입하여 경찰신뢰에 대한 연구를 진행하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 위계적 선형모델에 56개 국가의 자료를 투입ㆍ분석하여 집단수준의 분산을 늘리고, 그에 따라 계수 추정에 발생될 수 있는 편향을 줄였다는 점 역시 이 연구의 의의를 찾아볼 수 있다.

The purpose of this study was to extend the multi level approach to confidence in the police to establish a model that considers individual level and national level factors at the same time and to conduct empirical verification through analysis of the questionnaires of citizens of various countries . The results showed that age, social class, and an experience of crime victimization had a significant influence on the confidence in the police. At the same time, among the national level variables, individuals in areas with high levels of access to the public service were less likely to trust the police. The result of this study was meaningful as we investigated the factors influencing confidence in the police, not only by inputting individual level variables but also by applying the national level variables to the model. In addition, this study is significant as far as the data of 56 countries were gathered and analyzed in the hierarchical linear model in an attempt to increase the dispersion of the group level variance and thereby to reduce the bias that may occur in estimating the coefficients.
