This study was conducted to investigate the community structure of aquatic insects in Pangtae Creek(or Jindong stream) located at the upper basin of the North Han River from April 1992 to September 1993. Aquatic insects were classified into 151 species within 40 families and 7 orders. Abundance of aquatic insects at each sites were Trichoptera(41.1%), Ephemeroptera(36.9%), Diptera(15.6%), and Plecoptera(4,72%). The fauna and flora of the Pangtae Creek are well preserved and forest stands were luxuriant along side. Also variable range of water temperature was narrow and water temperature during midsummer at the Pangtae Creek was no zooming. Confirmed pH was neutral value from 6.0 to 6.9. The dissolved oxygen revealed high value about 15ppm. Therefore, Current velocity, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and substrate were important factors determining species composition and abundances. Dominance indices ranged between 0.15∼0.68 and 0.15∼0.46 in 1992 and 1993, respectively. Species diversity indices ranged from 1.48 to 3.67 in 1992 and from 2.20 to 3.45 in 1993. Diversity, richness, and eveness indices in these areas were fairly higher than those in other areas investigated previously. This result suggest that the Pangtae Creek could be characterized as clear water stream; Oligosaprobic.
