The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness and the practicability of application of Internet services to promote the interactions between lecturer and students and between students. For this purpose, the course of an Introduction to Biology Education was run with application of Internet services as extra assignments during the spring semester of 1997 academic year. Twenty-nine students participated in the course. Internet services of e-mail, mailing list, web forum, chatting, BBS, and FTP were used in the course to promote interactions between the students and between the lecturer and the students. The log files of those Internet services and the student questionnaire results were examined to find out the practicability of the course and what kinds of interactions took place and how frequently they occurred. The interaction between the lecturer and the students through Internet services made the course run more effectively and gave them personal intimacy. The lecturer played roles as a guide, an adviser, and a system operator in the discussions on Internet. The lecturer`s feedback was of help to the students` learning. The course using Internet services as extra assignments promoted active interactions between students in group learning and discussions. Group learning using Internet services enabled high level of critical thinking, problem solving, and successful accomplishment of cooperative learning task. Through the synchronous and asynchronous discussions without any restrictions of time and space, the students could approach the problems more freely and come to their decisions easily. The asynchronous discussion through web forum was more fit for the lessons requiring critical thinking. In contrast, the synchronous discussion through chatting, worked as face to face discussion, was suited for immediate problem-solving. The shortage of computers with Internet available to students and the massive exhaustion of lecturer`s and students` time and efforts were the major obstacles to be solved to the successful use of Internet services in education.
