This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of the different nitrogen rate and cutting stage on the dead stubble, the carbohydrate reserves in stubble, and the dry matter yield of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). The cultivar used in the present study was Pioneer 988. The experiment was arranged as a split plot design with three replications and undertaken in the Experimental Livestock Farm of Agriculture Coll., Seoul Nat`l Univ. in Suweon, 1982. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The dead stubble after the first cutting was found to be great with high rate of nitrogen fertilizer and early cutting stage. 2. Early cutting stage at the first harvest showed rapidly decreasing carbohydrate reserves in the stubble. 3. The total dry matter yield was significantly increased as the stage of maturity developed (p$lt;0.05). However, dry matter yield of forage was not influenced with the high nitrogen fertilization. 4. There were positive correlations between plant height and carbohydrate reserves in stubble and dry matter yield. However, there were negative correlations between plant height and dead stubble, and between dead stubble and dry matter yield. 5. In conclusion, this study suggested that the more yield of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Pioneer 988) could be obtained the early heading stage for the first cutting, and the three harvest per year in Korea.
