The current study was undertaken to determine the effects of feeding vegetable residues extracted with ether or water on serum cholesterol and fecal steroid excretion in young broiler chickens. Blood samples were obtained at the end of the experiment by decapitation and feces samples were collected during the last two days of the experiment. The levels of vegetables and cholesterol in the diets were 10.0%, 1.0% (W/W), respectively. Crude fiber contents in the diets were highly correlated with serum cholesterol and fecal lipids in both ether-and water-treated vegetable groups. These correlation coefficients were higher compared to those obtained from the previous study which used whole vegetables. This suggests that other factors as well as crude fibers are associated with affecting serum cholesterol levels.
