Survey of Dairy Farms in Dalryung District

A survey of dairy farms in Dalryung district was made from July 6 to August 5, 1970. The population of dairy cattle was 970 (67 dairy farm) in Dalryung district w-hick is consisted of Daegu, Dalsung-gun, Gyungsan-gun, Chilgog-gun, Goryung-gun and Sungju-gun. The results of the survey are as follows; 1. Average size of dairy herd was 14.48 heads. The largest dairy farm had 77 heads, and the smallest farm had only one. Average number of milking cows per farm was 7.47. The largest dairy farm had 48 milking cows and the smallest farm had only 1 milking cow. 2. Age distribution shows that 3 years old cows occupy 321(56.81%) and 4 year olds cows occupy 123 (21.77%). The oldest cows were 11 years old. 3. Thirty-two dairy farms (47.77%) have depended on natural service and twenty-one farms (37.31%) have taken artificial insemination. There were 24 bulls in this district, that is, 24.54 cows per bull. 4. The largest number of cows were to calf in May, February, August and September in that order, but 320(56.64%) cows had shown physiological vacancy. 5. Among 392 calves there w ere 200 female calves (51.02%) and 192 male calves (48.98%). 6. Breeding efficiency found was as follows: pregnant cows 242 (42.83%), unidentified 99 (17.52%), physiological vacancy 114(20.18%), missing of mating chance 23(4.07%) and reproductive disorders 89(15.40%). 7. Among 87 reproductive disorders, 73(83.92%) were in ovarian disease of which 43 (49.43%) were in ovarian atrophy, 6 (6.8%) in uterine disease, 2 (2.3%) in vaginal disease and 6 (6.87%) in other disease.
