Studies on the Nutritive Values of the Native Grasses and Legumes in Korea ( Ⅴ. Chemical Determination on the Mineral Content of the Native Herbage Plants )

The present experiment was carried out to investigate the content of some nutritionally important mineral elements in 9 species of native grasses and 3 species of native legumes in Korea. The results observed are as follows: 1. The calcium content was different slightly according to the species of herbage studied. Present data revealed that the Ca content of legumes(1.07%) was three times higher than that of grasses(0.3%), although the content of phosphorus in legumes(0.21%) was not very much higher than that of grasses(0.15%). Potasium content was highest in Digitaria sanguinalis and lowest in Zoysia japonica. The different native herbage plants contained different amount of Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn. 2. The contents of Ca, P, and K decreased as the stage of maturity advanced, but Zoysia japonica increased slightly in October. Other minerals did not show consistent changes of the content by the stage of maturity. 3. In the locational changes of mineral contents, native herbage of Cheju area had significantly lower Ca and those of Yongin area had the lower P and K contents. The content of Fe was generally high in the native herbages produced at Daekwannyung area, while the contents of Mn and Cu were relatively low. The content of Zn was significantly high in the herbages produced from Jinju area. Present data indicated that there is a locational changes in mineral contents of native herbage plants. 4. Fertilizer application increased K content of the herbage plants except Cymbopogon goeringii and Arundinella hirta. Another minerals, however, were not affected by the fertilizer application.
