Here we report a facile way of preparing alkyl homologues of arteannuic acid, which in turn could serve as a precursor for the alkyl homologues of artemisinin. Arteannuic acid was treated with excess diazoalkanes (diazomethane, diazoethane, diphenyldiazomethane, 2-diazopropane) to give adducts. The structure of the adducts was elucidated by NMR, MS, IR UV, and elemental analysis. The products obtained through the photolysis and thermolysis of the adducts were analyzed by a GC-MS. The structures of the lysis products from the diazomethane adduct were examined after HPLC separation.
