The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychosocial variables that influencing mental hygiene of the unemployed. This study explored how demographic variables would be correaated with the unemployed`s mental hygiene, with 203 unemployed. There were positive correlations between age, duration of unemployment, and frequency of alcohol drinking, but no significant correlation between age, education level, duration of unemployment, reason of unemployment, and mental hygiene. The unemployed who had not joined job training program showed more negative mental hygiene than those who had joined. The unemployed who had not joined training program showed higher level of anxiety and depression in accordance with the increase of duration of unemployment. Job training program was identified to be one of the major intervening variable preventing the negative mental health of the unemployed. The suggestions and the limitations of this study, and the directions of future study were discussed.
