특수한 요구를 가진 학생들을 일반교육에 포함시키는 것, 더 넓게는 온갖 종류의 세분화된 집단들이 모여있는 사회에 포함시키는 일은 실제적으로 전 서구사회에서 지난 수십년동안 논의 되어온 문제임에도 불구하고 그 결과는 매우 다른 양상을 볼 수 있다. 따라서 통합교육에 대한 우리의 지식을 넓히고 각자의 경험에서 무엇인가를 배우기 위해 그 결과들의 다양성을 기술하고 평가하며 어떠한 문제점이 있는가를 논의해 봄으로써 보는 것은 의미 있는 일일 것이다. 본 논문에서는 통합교육이 활발히 실행되고 있는 국가들의 통합의 경험을 서술, 평가하며 그에 따른 문제점을 논의하고자 한다. 여기에는 일반교육과 특수교육의 조직, 일반교육 내에서의 특수한 요구를 가진 학생들을 위한 지도체계, 통합된 교실 내에서 교사들에게 필요한 지원과 기술 등에 대한 설명 등이 포함된다.

The integration of students with special needs into regular education and -in a wider context- the integration into society of all kinds of segregated groups have been debated in the last decades throughout practically the whole western world. Yet, the outcomes have been very different. It is worthwhile describing this diversity and evaluating the outcomes in order to extend our knowledge about integration. The aim of this study is to describe and evaluate the experience of integration in different countries. This implies a description of the organization of regular and special education, instructional arrangements for children with special needs within regular education, and support and facilities for teachers in integrated classroom.
