인터넷과 정보기술 발달로 일상 환경이 확장됨에 따라 현대인은 현실세계만이 아닌 가상공간에서도 대인관계를 맺으며 살아간다. 이 연구에서는 주로 대학생들이 이 시기 온라인에 기반을 두어 어떠한 양상으로 대인관계를 경험하는지 질적 사례연구로 접근해서 이해하였다. 연구방법으로 청소년 후기에서 성인전환단계로 발달 중인 남녀 대학생 5명을 연구참여자로 선정했고, 평균 3회기 일대일 심층면담을 진행해 연구주제에 관한 구술자료를 직접 확보했다. 수집한 자료는 질적 사례연구로 분석했다. 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석으로 자료를 검토하여, 대학생들이 온라인 대인관계에서 경험한 연결의 의미에 대한 15개 하위범주를 분석결과로 밝혀냈다. 그리고, 이러한 결과를 다시 압축 및 구조화해 ‘물리적 제약 적어 편리한 만큼 피할 수 없어 불편한 연결고리’, ‘오프라인과 다른 면 보여주면서도 갖은 꾸밈으로 관계 맺는 모순’, ‘서로 공감하며 끈끈해져도 사소한 단어 하나로 끊어질 수 있는 예민한 사이’, ‘폭넓게 세상살이 나누지만 끼리끼리 모이는 편협한 연대감’과 같은 4개의 상위범주를 발견했다. 최종적으로 찾은 중심주제는 ‘자유와 속박 뒤엉킨 가상공간의 연결은 포용과 갈등으로 관계성 발달을 잇는 통로’였다. 끝으로, 연구결과에 근거해 대학생 시기 온라인 대인관계를 연결의 특성에 초점을 두어 검토하고 현대적 맥락에서 지원책을 모색하고자 세 가지 방안에 바탕해 논의했다.
As the living environment expands to include virtual spaces due to the Internet and advancements in Information Technology, contemporary individuals are forming connections in online interpersonal relationships. This study employed a qualitative case study approach to explore how college students experience these connections. Five male and female college students were selected as participants, and each underwent an average of three one-on-one in-depth interviews to gather direct insights on the research topic. The analysis, conducted both within and across cases, identified 15 subordinate categories reflecting the meanings of connections in online interpersonal relationships among college students. These findings were then condensed into four superordinate categories: 'An uncomfortable connection link that is unavoidable on the Internet, where fewer physical barriers lead to greater convenience,' 'The contradiction of fostering relationships by presenting an idealized self while concealing one's true identity,' 'A fragile relationship that can be easily severed by a trivial remark, despite having once been empathetic and strong,' and 'The Internet as a narrow form of solidarity, where like-minded individuals congregate while sharing a broad range of life topics.' The central theme emerged as, 'The interconnected virtual space, intertwining freedom and constraint, serves as a conduit for interpersonal development through inclusion and conflict.' Based on these findings, the study concludes with three discussion points aimed at re-examining college students' online interpersonal relationships, focusing on the aspect of connection to help them cultivate relationality in the modern context.
