해양 생태계에서 이전에 기록되지 않았던 종을 발견하는 것은 종 목록의 정확성을 높이고 효과적인 보존 및 관리 전략을 지원하기 때문에 국가 해양 생물다양성 측면에서 중요하다. 본 연구는 형태학적 및 분자학적 분석을 바탕으로 2025년 9월 24일 울릉도 연안 해역에서 채집한 나비고기과(Chaetodontidae) 국내 미기록종을 보고하였다. 표본의 형태학적 특성은 Chaetodon melannotus Bloch & Schneider, 1801의 원기재와 잘 일치했으며, 특히 몸체 측면의 대각선 검은 줄무늬, 뒷면의 검은 반점, 기단 꼬리의 검은 안장 패턴 등의 특성을 보였다. mtDNA COI 영역 염기서열 분석 결과, 이 표본은 젠뱅크에 등록된 C. melannotus 데이터와 잘 일치하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구는 국내에서 처음 확인된 C.melannotus에 대해 ‘검은등나비고기’라는 새로운 한국어 명칭을 제안한다.

Discovering previously unrecorded species in marine ecosystems is important for national marine biodiversity, as it improves the accuracy of species inventories and supports effective conservation and management strategies. This study reports an unrecorded specimen of butterflyfish (Chaetodontidae) collected from the coastal waters off Ulleung Island on September 24, 2025, based on morphological and molecular analyses. The body morphometrics of the specimen matched well with the original description of Chaetodon melannotus Bloch & Schneider, 1801, in the form of characteristics such as diagonal black stripes on the body side, black spots on the back, and black saddle patterns on the tail of the base. The mtDNA COI region sequencing results showed that this specimen well aligned with the GenBank-registered C. melannotus data. Consequently, this study suggests a new Korean name as “Geom-eun-deung-na-bi-go-gi” for C. melannotus, which was first identified in Korea.
