본 연구는 팬데믹 이후 가속화된 디지털 전환 시대에 대응하여, 시공간의 물리적 제약을 넘어선 새로운 국제협력 디자인 교육 모형을 제안하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 온라인의 효율성과 오프라인의 신체적 경험을 결합한 ‘피지털 기반의 블렌디드 러닝’ 모형을 설계하고, 한·일 대학생 22명이 참여한 공동 프로젝트 디자인 워크숍에 적용하여 그 효과를 검증하였다. 연구 방법으로는 ‘더블 다이아몬드’ 프로세스를 적용하여, 전반부는 디지털 툴을 활용한 협업으로, 후반부는 실물 ‘문화 툴킷’을 제작하여 국제 우편으로 교환하는 체험 중심 학습으로 구조화하였다. 연구 결과, 디지털 공간에서 기획된 아이디어를 물리적 실체로 전환하여 교환하는 과정은 비대면 학습의 한계인 실재감 부재를 극복하고, 참여자들의 학습 몰입도와 타문화에 대한 심층적 이해를 높이는 핵심 기제로 작용하였다. 또한, 이질적인 전공과 언어 배경을 가진 참여자들에게 디자인 씽킹은 소통을 매개하는 ‘공통 언어’로서 기능하며 문화적 문해력을 함양하는 데 기여하였다. 본 연구는 물리적 이동 없이도 감각적 교류가 가능한 ‘피지털 교육 모형’의 실효성을 입증하고, 향후 고도화 방향을 제시했다는 점에서, 초연결 시대의 지속가능한 글로벌 디자인 교육을 위한 기초 자료로서 의의가 있다.
This study aims to propose a new international cooperative design education model that transcends the physical constraints of time and space. To this end, a phygital blended learning model that combines the efficiency of online collaboration with the embodied experience of offline interaction was designed and applied to a joint design workshop involving 22 Korean and Japanese university students. Using the Double Diamond process, the first half of the workshop was structured around collaboration through digital tools, while the latter half involved experience-based learning in which students produced physical “cultural toolkits” and exchanged them via international mail. The findings indicate that transforming ideas conceived in digital spaces into tangible artifacts played a key role in overcoming the low sense of presence inherent in remote learning, thereby enhancing learners’ engagement and deepening their understanding of other cultures. In addition, for participants with heterogeneous academic and linguistic backgrounds, design thinking functioned as a “common language,” facilitating communication and fostering cultural literacy. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a phygital education model that enables sensory exchange without physical mobility and offers directions for further advancement, thereby providing foundational insights for sustainable global design education in a hyperconnected era.
