This article analyzes how British radical liberals interpreted the American Civil War through John Bright. It argues that Bright's pro-Union stance was not a deviation from Manchester liberalism but a transatlantic liberal response to a moment when free trade, peace, democracy, and antislavery came into tension. Using his speeches, public meetings, and correspondence with figures such as Charles Sumner, it shows that Bright framed the war primarily as a struggle over slavery and democratic government, not tariffs. By contrasting Bright with Richard Cobden, the article highlights a fault line within British liberalism: Cobden upheld peace and free trade as inseparable, while Bright treated abolition as the precondition for a legitimate free-trade order grounded in free labor. Bright also expected emancipation and Union victory to stabilize the cotton economy and invigorate British parliamentary reform, making the Civil War a key test of liberal futures across the Atlantic world.
