서계 박태무(1677~1756)는 산수를 유람하거나 선현들의 유적지를 순례하고 기행시를 지었다. 그 과정에서 그는 서원을 순례하고, 시를 창작하며 선현을 추모하는 마음을 표현했다. 먼저 성리학의 연원이 되는 인물을 인식하며 서원을 시로 형상화할 경우, 서원은 성리학의 연원과 도학을 전승하는 공간으로 표현된다. 다음으로 서원에 배향된 인물을 인식하며 서원을 시로 형상화할 경우, 그 인물을 존모하는 마음을 드러내는 한편, 박태무 당대에 그 인물이 부재함을 아쉬워하는 마음을 드러냈다. 이를 통해 서원은 배향된 인물을 존모하는 공간, 또는 서원에 배향된 인물의 자취나 학덕이 깃든 공간으로 표현되었다. 이처럼 박태무는 서원을 순례를 통해 선현들을 존숭하는 마음을 행동으로 옮기면서, 시를 통해 선현들을 지향하고 본받는 의지를 드러낼 수 있었다.

Seogye Park Tae-mu(1677-1756) traveled through scenic landscapes and made pilgrimages to the sites associated with earlier sages, composing travel poems along the way. In this process, he visited seowon－private Confucian academies of the Joseon dynasty－and expressed his reverence for earlier figures through poetic composition. First, when he perceived the seowon in relation to figures regarded as the origins of Neo-Confucian learning and represented the seowon in poetry, these academies were depicted as spaces that inherit the origins and ideal politics of Neo-Confucianism. Next, when he focused on the individuals enshrined in a given seowon and shaped the academy poetically, he revealed both a sense of veneration for those figures and a sense of regret over their absence in his own time. Through this perspective, the seowon came to be portrayed as spaces for honoring the enshrined figures, or as places imbued with the traces and scholarly virtue of those individuals. In this way, by making pilgrimages to seowon, Park Tae-mu transformed his reverence for earlier sages into concrete action, while through poetry he articulated his aspiration to pursue and emulate their intellectual and moral attainments.
