본 연구의 목적은 벤자민 B. 워필드(Benjamin B. Warfield, 1851-1921)의 신학에 나타나는 성경과 교리의 유기적 연관성을 탐구함으로써, 워필드가 성령의 사역을 약화하고 철학을 신학보다 더 앞세워 신학을 합리주의화하였다는 비판에 대하여, 워필드가 오히려 하나님의 말씀인 성경을 신학의 유일하고 충분한 원천으로 확립하였음을 논증하는 데 있다. 연구는 세 단계로 전개된다. 첫째, 본 연구는 워필드가 모든 학문이 그 대상, 인식 주체, 그리고 매개를 전제하듯이, 신학 또한 신학의 대상으로서의 하나님, 인식 주체로서 인간의 종교적 본성, 그리고 학문의 매개인 계시를 전제해야 한다고 보았음을 밝힌다. 워필드는 신학의 매개인 계시가 없다면 신학이 불가능하다고 주장하는데, 특히 그는 다양한 형태의 계시들 가운데 오직 기록된 말씀인 성경만이 신학의 유일하고 충분한 원천임을 강조한다. 둘째, 본 연구는 변증학의 위치와 역할에 대한 워필드의 이해를 논구하고 워필드가 신학의 주관적 측면과 성령의 사역을 간과하지 않는다는 점을 드러냄으로써 워필드의 신학, 특별히 변증학에 대한 이해가 객관성에 치우친 합리주의적 성격을 보인다는 비판이 적절하지 않음을 논증한다. 셋째, 본 연구는 워필드의 신학에 나타나는 성경과 교리의 유기적 연관성을 고찰함으로써, 그가 철저히 성경에 기초한 신학을 추구하였음을 논증한다. 워필드에게 특별히 삼위일체 교리는 성경의 교리이면서 동시에 성경 영감 교리의 궁극적 기초를 이룬다. 따라서 본 연구는 워필드가 성경으로부터 교리를 도출하고, 다시 교리를 통하여 성경을 해석함으로써, 그의 신학이 성경으로 성경을 해석한다는 개혁 신학의 원리에 충실함을 논증한다.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate, by exploring the organic correlation between Scripture and doctrine in the theology of Benjamin B. Warfield (1851-1921), that Warfield established Scripture as the sole and sufficient source of theology. This study is developed in three stages. First, this study reveals that Warfield maintains that Scriputre is the sole and sufficient source of theology. Warfield believes that theology is impossible apart from revelation as its necessary medium, and that among the various forms of revelation, only the written Word of God, Scripture, serves as the sole and sufficient source of theology. Second, this study examines Warfield’s understanding of apologetics and argues that the criticism that Warfield’s theology, especially his apologetics, exhibits a rationalistic character overly oriented toward objectivity is misplaced. Warfield does not neglect the subjective dimension of theology and the work of the Holy Spirit in his understanding of apologetics. Third, this study demonstrates that Warfield pursued his theology thoroughly grounded in Scripture by examining the organic correlation between Scripture and doctrine in Warfield’s theology. For Warfield, especially the doctrine of the Trinity is both a doctrine of Scripture itself at the same time the ultimate foundation of the doctrine of biblical inspiration. Therefore, this study argues that Warfield was faithful to the Reformed principle that Scripture interprets Scripture.
