본 연구는 오리게네스의 신학사상에서 핵심을 이루는 자유의지 개념을 중심으로 그 신학적 오류와 특징을 고찰하고 그의 성경 해석을 비판한다. 금욕주의를 포함하여 그의 모든 신학적 오류들은 자유의지와 연관된다. 먼저 오리게네스의 자유의지의 원리는 기독론을 출발점으로 삼는다. 그는 십자가의 대속 사건을 중보적 관점에서 이해하기보다, 모범적 그리스도로 해석한다. 마찬가지로 그는 만물의 타락, 질서, 회복, 영혼 선재, 예지 예정 등 다양한 교리들을 이성적 영혼의 자유의지 사용에 따른 결과로 해석한다. 오리게네스에게 자유의지 개념은 운동인의 원리로 설명된다. 이성적 영혼은 인상(phantasy)의 본성을 내포한다. 외부적 자극이나 내부적 충동으로 인상이 형성되는 것은 본성적인 것인데, 그럼에도 이것을 판단하여 행위를 도출하게 하는 원인은 인간의 영혼, 즉 자유의지를 가진 영혼이다. 인상의 발생을 선하게 사용하든지 악하게 사용하든지 간에 그것을 판단하는 것은 이성의 고유한 특권이다. 이러한 의미에서, 오리게네스의 금욕주의는 그의 자유의지의 관점에서 해석되어야 한다. 오리게네스에게서 나타나는 금욕적인 철학의 삶을 고려할 때, 그의 삶은 자유의지의 발현으로 가득한 삶이라고 볼 수 있다. 마지막으로, 자유의지는 오리게네스의 성경 해석의 기초가 된다. 자유의지를 지지하기 위해 사용한 대표적인 예가 별에 대한 해석이다. 그는 별을 이성적 영혼, 즉 자유의지의 주체로 간주하고, 그같은 관점을 지지하는 성경 본문들을 대거 인용함으로, 성경 본문의 원래 의도를 저버린다. 또한 자유의지를 지지하지 않는 듯한 본문 가운데 하나인 바로의 마음을 완악하게 하셨다는 표현을 인용하면서, 하나님의 주권을 제거하고, 오히려 바로가 자유의지를 악하게 사용한 결과로 하나님이 완악하게 하셨다고 해석한다.

This study examines Origen’s theology with a particular focus on his doctrine of free will, analyzing its theological errors and implications for his biblical interpretation. All of his theological errors, including his asceticism, are related to the concept of free will. First, Origen’s principle of free will begins with his Christology. Instead of interpreting the union of the divine and human natures through the mediatorial function of the cross, he viewed Christ primarily as a moral exemplar. Likewise, doctrines such as the fall, order, restoration, the preexistence of souls, and even divine foreknowledge were all explained as the outcomes of rational souls exercising free will. Second, Origen articulated free will as the principle of motion inherent in rational souls. Rational beings, possessing the faculty of phantasia, receive impressions either from external stimuli or internal impulses. Yet the decisive factor in determining actions lies not in the impressions themselves but in the rational soul endowed with free will. In this vein, Origen’s asceticism should be interpreted from the perspective of his concept of free will. Considering the ascetic philosophical life evident in Origen, his existence can be understood as a life thoroughly imbued with the exercise of free will. Finally, Origen’s doctrine of free will provided the foundation for his biblical hermeneutics. For example, he interpreted celestial bodies as rational souls exercising freedom, citing numerous biblical passages to support this view. Conversely, in texts such as God’s hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, Origen argued that Pharaoh’s misuse of free will was the true cause, thereby eliminating divine sovereignty in favor of human responsibility.
