본 논문은 미야모토 유리코의 장편소설 『노부코』를 기존의 페미니즘적 관점에서 인프라 인문학적 관점으로 재해석하고자 한다. 주인공 노부코가 미국에서 지속적으로 경험하는 장소적 소외의 근원이 물리적·사회적·감각적 인프라의 부조화에 있음을 밝히는 것이다. 본 연구는 남성 중심적으로 구성된 작업 공간, 폐쇄적인 일본인 유학생 사회의 인적 인프라, 그리고 뉴욕의 지하철·거리·미술관·호텔 등 도시 인프라와의 감각적·정동적 불일치에 주목한다. 아버지의 작업실에서 창가의 경계에 위치한 신체, 유학생 모임에서 배제된 시선, 지하철역과 거리에서 반복되는 혼란과 피로, 그리고 미술관의 규율화된 감각체계 속에서 느끼는 이질감은 모두 노부코의 신체가 미국의 인프라적 질서와 맞물리지 못하는 과정을 구체적으로 드러낸다. 이러한 부조화는 결국 주체의 정서적 소외를 심화시키며, 노부코가 쓰쿠다 이치로에게 의존하게 되는 서사적 맥락 또한 일시적으로나마 인프라적 압박에서 벗어나기 위한 방어적 선택으로 해석될 수 있다. 본 연구는 인프라라는 관점이 『노부코』의 미국 체류 서사를 기존의 페미니즘·문화비평적 독해를 넘어서는 새로운 층위에서 이해할 수 있음을 보여준다. 동시에 여성 주체와 근대 인프라의 충돌이라는 문제를 문학 텍스트 분석의 중요한 방법론적 지평으로 확장한다.
This study offers a reinterpretation of Miyamoto Yuriko’s Nobuko through the analytical lens of infrastructure humanities, arguing that the protagonist’s persistent sense of alienation during her stay in the United States derives from multilayered mismatches with physical, social, and sensory infrastructures. Whereas earlier scholarship has tended to attribute Nobuko’s critical view of America to cultural difference or personal temperament, this study emphasizes how her experiences are shaped by the gendered spatial arrangements of her father’s workspace, the closed human networks of the Japanese student community, and the sensory dissonance produced by New York’s subway, streets, museums, and hotels. Detailed analysis of scenes such as Nobuko’s marginal position by the window in her father’s office, her discomfort within student gatherings, her confusion and exhaustion in transit spaces, and her misalignment with the museum’s regulated aesthetic system reveals how her body repeatedly fails to synchronize with the infrastructural rhythms of American life. These forms of infrastructural dissonance deepen her emotional estrangement and also contextualize her reliance on Tsukuda Ichirō as a temporary refuge from these pressures. By foregrounding infrastructure as a critical category, this study moves beyond traditional feminist or cultural readings of Nobuko and demonstrates how the novel illuminates the tensions between female subjectivity and the modern infrastructural systems that shape perception, mobility, and belonging. Ultimately, this analysis contributes to broader discussions of embodiment and modernity in Japanese literature.
