성준용은 경북대학교 석사과정에서 홍경희로부터 도시구조론을 공부했고, 일본 히로시마대학 박사과정에서 모리카와 히로시로부터 도시시스템론을 공부했다. 그는 1970년대 후반~2000년대 후반의 기간에 한국 도시지리학에 1960~1970년대에 일본과 구미에서 새로이 정립된 도시시스템의 이론과 방법론을 도입하고, 이를 한국의 도시시스템 연구에 종합적이고 체계적으로 적용하여 ‘한국의 도시시스템의 특질’을 구명했는데, 그는 이 과정에서 한국의 도시시스템 연구의 중요한 골자를 이루는 한국의 중심지시스템 연구도 실행했다. 그는 이러한 과정을 통해 한국에서 도시시스템 연구의 이론과 방법론의 체제를 정립하는데 크게 기여했다. 이로써 그는 한국에서 도시시스템 연구의 선구자이면서 정립자로 평가된다. 그는 1997년 한국도시지리학회 창립을 주도하고 초대회장을 역임하면서 학회 발전의 초석을 놓았고, 1970~2006년간 사범대학에 재직하면서 우수한 지리교사 양성에도 혼신의 노력을 다했다.

Jun-Yong Sung studied urban structural theory under Kyung-Hi Hong during his master’s degree at Kyungpook National University, and urban system theory under Hiroshi Morikawa during his doctoral degree at Hiroshima University. Between the late 1970s and the late 2000s, he introduced theories and methodologies of urban system newly established in Japan and the West to Korean urban geography in the 1960s and 1970s. He applied these theories comprehensively and systematically to the study of Korean urban system, elucidating the characteristics of the Korean urban system. In the process, he also conducted research on Korean central place system, a crucial gist of Korean urban system research. Through this process, he greatly contributed to establishing a system of theory and methodology of urban system research in Korea. For this reason, he is considered a pioneer and founder of urban system research in Korea. He led the founding of the Korean Urban Geographical Society in 1997 and served as its first president, laying the cornerstone for its development. He also devoted his utmost efforts to training excellent geography teachers while working at two colleges of education from 1970 to 2006.
