일제 말기 담배는 위문담배와 같은 ‘권장’과 극장 내 ‘금지’라는 이중적 지위를 지녔다. 극장은 흡연 금지라는 단연의 장소였지만 유일하게 무대만큼은 흡연이 허락된 공간이었다. 국민연극경연에 등장하는 인물들은 담배 연기를 내뿜으며 전시의 삶을 선전하고 연기하였다. 관객들은 비록 객석에서 담배를 태우지 못했지만, 자신과 같은 처지에 놓여있는 조선인 배우들이 내뿜는 담배 연기를 맡으며 이 임무 앞에서 시대의 한숨을 내뱉을 수 있는 시간을 갖게 되었다.
본고는 국민연극경연대회 참가작에 나타난 담배 태우는 조선인들의 모습에 주목함으로써, 일제 말기국민연극에서의 흡연 장면과 담배가 갖는 의미, 일제 말기 전쟁 앞에 선 조선인들의 내면 풍경 등을 살펴보았다. 이 장면들은 인물들의 경제적 상황과 인물의 신분이 갖는 시선을 드러낸다. 또한 제국 일본의 이데올로기를 선전해야 하는 프로파간다극임에도 의도치 않게 제국 일본이 조선인을 착취하는 현장을 관객들에게 목격하게 한다. 한편 지식인 청년들은 담배를 태우며 자신의 시대적 사명과 임무에 고민한다. 허나 이 고민의 끝은 무대에서 직접적으로 발화되지 않지만 희생과 죽음이다. 국민연극은 담배 연기와 함께 이 비극의 상황을 조선인들이 앉아 있는 객석으로 자연스럽게 퍼트린다.
During the late Japanese colonial period, smoking held a dual status: "encouraged," like comfort cigarettes, and "prohibited" in theaters. While theaters were strictly prohibited from smoking, the stage was the only space where smoking was permitted. Characters in the National Theater Competition exhaled cigarette smoke to promote and portray life during wartime. Although audiences were prohibited from smoking in their seats, the inhalation of the cigarette smoke from Korean actors, who faced similar circumstances, provided them with a moment to reflect on this mission and the times.
This paper examines the smoking scenes in national theater during the late Japanese colonial period, the significance of cigarettes, and the inner lives of Koreans facing war in the final days of Japanese colonial rule by focusing on the portrayal of Koreans smoking in the National Theater Competition entries. These scenes reveal the economic circumstances of the characters and the perspectives they reflect on their social status. Furthermore, despite being propaganda plays intended to promote Imperial Japan's ideology, they inadvertently expose audiences to the exploitation of Koreans by Imperial Japan. Meanwhile, young intellectuals smoke cigarettes and ponder their mission and duty in this era. However, the culmination of this agonizing, though not directly expressed on stage, is sacrifice and death. The national play naturally spreads this tragic situation through the smoke of cigarettes into the audience, where the Koreans sit.
