본 연구는 근현대 한국불교의 대표적 고승 운허의 방대한 저술 및 역경 작업을 재조명하고, 「탁상일기」, 「역경간행일람」, 「자초연보」 등 1차 자료에 근거하여 그의 출판물 68종을 정리하였다. 운허의 작업은 단순한 경전 번역을 넘어, 해방 이후 한국불교의 신행과 교육, 출판의 현대화와 대중화를 선도한 종교적·문화적 실천이었다. 본 연구는 기존에 정확히 정리되지 않았던 도서 목록을 오류 수정과 함께 보완하고, 『조계종요강』, 『불교통사』, 『권발보리심문』. 『초발심자경문』, 『철오선사어록』, 『고독지옥참회』, 『삼시계념불사』 등 그간 간과되어 온 출판물의 존재를 발굴하고 검증하였다. 아울러 『자비수참』, 『철오선사어록』, 『불교의자비(방생)이야기』, 『문수사리 발원경(외二경)·문수보살 영험록』 등은 운허 번역 및 편찬임에도 불구하고 역자가 표기되지 않았거나 타인 명의로 출간된 사례들을 밝혀내고, 그 유통 경로를 추적하였다. 특히 반복적인 재출간에도 불구하고 번역자가 누락되어 유통되는 불교계의 출판 관행은 법보시 중심의 전통적 문화와 얽혀 있음을 확인하였다. 본 논문은 이러한 출판문화가 역경의 지속 가능성과 후속 세대의 참여를 저해할 수 있음을 지적하며, 번역 작업의 전문성과 공적 책임성을 확보하기 위한 성찰과 제도적 논의의 필요성도 제기한다.
This study reexamines the extensive writings and translation work of Ven. Unheo, a representative monk of modern Korean Buddhism, and catalogs his 66 publications based on primary sources such as his Desk Diary (Taksang Ilgi), Record of Translation Publications (Yeokgyeong Ganhaeng Illam), and Autobiographical Notes (Jacho Yeonbo). Ven. Unheo’s work transcended simple scripture translation; it was a religious and cultural practice that contributed to the modernization and popularization of Buddhist practice, education, and publishing in Korea after liberation. This study supplements the previously incomplete bibliography by correcting errors and identifying previously unconfirmed publications, such as Jogye Order Essentials (曹溪宗要綱), History of Buddhism (佛敎通史), Gwonbalborisimmun (勸發菩提心文), Chobalsimjagyeongmun (初發心自警文), Cheoro Seon-master’s Word Record (徹悟禪 師語錄), Godokjiokchamhoe (孤獨地獄懺悔), and Samsigyenyeombulsa (三時繫念佛事). Furthermore, it uncovered cases in which Ven. Unheo’s translations were either left uncredited or published under another’s name - such as Jabisucham (慈悲水懺), Cheoro Seon-master’s Word Record, Stories of Buddhist Compassion (佛敎의 慈悲(放生)이야기), and Manjusri Vows Sutra (and Two Other Scriptures) · Miraculous Records of Manjusri Bodhisattva (文殊師利 發願經(外二經) · 文殊菩薩 靈驗錄) - were published without attribution or under the names of others, and traces their circulation pathways. It was confirmed that the Buddhist publishing practice of distributing works with omitted translator credits, despite repeated reprints, is intertwined with the tradition centered on the dharma offering. This paper points out that such publishing culture can hinder the sustainability of translations and the participation of subsequent generations, and also raises the need for reflection and institutional discussion to ensure the professionalism and public accountability of translation work.
