이 논문은 영국 빅토리아기 여성을 대표하는 담론인 ‘집안의 천사’라는 테제가 누가 어떻게 만들고 확산시켜 교과서에 마치 실제인 양 알려지게 되는지 그 과정을 분석한 것이다. 특히 19세기 영국에서 가장 활발했던 여성 참정권 투쟁과 성병 방지법 폐지 운동이라는 양 갈래의 캠페인 전개 과정을 분석하여 여성들이 적극적으로 조직을 결성하고 행동하였다는 점을 보여주고자 하였다. 또한 여성의 공적 교육에 대한 열망이 있었으며, 실제로 여자 직업 학교를 비롯한 고등 교육기관은 물론이고 대학교까지 설립되기 시작했다. 이런 점으로 미루어 보건대 여성들은 가정 내로 구속하고자 노력하였던 정부나 남성 지식인의 시도에 가장 적극적으로 대항하였다. 따라서 이전 시기와 비교하여 전무후무한 변화를 겪은 영국의 빅토리아기에 여성들은 수동적인 태도를 보인 것이 아니라 적극적으로 역사적 발전 과정에 주체로서 동참하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 ‘집안의 천사’ 담론은 널리 확산되었고 상식으로 둔갑하였다. 언제나 특정 시기에 여성을 가정 내로 제한하려는 시도나 담론은 늘 있었지만, 역사적 실제와는 모순되며, 특히 이 테제 역시 여성사에서는 하나의 신화임을 분명히 주장한다.

The purpose of this paper is to anayalze ‘so called’ the ‘the Angel of the House’ thesis. This thesis or proposition was a famous discourse of Women in Victorian England, and in spite of a discourse, that was well known as if a historical fact. But studying of Who was original, How did spread this phrase, and What point of this meaning, I conclude that ‘the Angel of the House’ was a myth of leading elites in that times. As great changes took place in Victorian England, that only women had no ideas and activities is or was possible? In fact, a lot of women have provoked women suffrage movements, even though, various conflicts in women circle were. And an other women have participated in abortion of Contagious Diseases Acts passionately. So they did resist at any attempts of being women do limit in home extremely. Above all, the historical fact is that high schools for women did estabilish and women Universites did start to set up in that period. Even if many campaigns of women happened, the proposition of ‘the Angel of the house’ was diffused as a fact in many historical textbooks. Finally that woman must be a housewife and mother - What a holy mission of woman!-in Victorian England was very contradictory in real world. So the ‘the Angel of the House’ thesis was just a myth of in women histories.
